weak point at the handle base / tote
Handle and knob are made of plastic. The screw hole broke at the base of the handle upon the first day during setup / use of this item. I snapped a picture and emailed Stanley support hoping for a replacement part. They directed me to return the item to Home Depot. This was frustrating for me as i already spent time sharpening a secondary bevel and flattening the sole, a complete waste of my time.

Large 100" Woodworking Table done with a Standley Hand Planer.
The 14" planer is OUTSTANDING, the performance has been great, I could not have completed my project without it. I have a small budget, but this planer made me develop a skill that will be with me forever. I had to joint together (12) 2x8x12' boards and I hand planed them all and glued them together. I just finished the project, and people think I used electric planer & jointer.

Nice, sturdy plane. Plastic handles are rather uncomfortable and gives me blisters after extended use (especially bad at the seems of the plastic). I was planning on replacing the handles with home made wooden ones when I purchased this plane, so it's not a huge deal for me.

                where's the quality assurance?
I suppose you can't expect much for 1 Grant. I couldn't understand why the frog was crooked with no real adjustment until I took it apart. not sure what guide they used to for the punch but it is visibly off center which. this is creating the twist in how the frog seats. at first i was tempted to notch the bracket and make it work but stopped myself so I can return it. not happy :(

Out of the box, this plane is rough. The factory grind on the sole and sides is rough and not very flat. It took several hours to flatten the sole and sides. I don’t mind the plastic handles. The handles are made of a dense sturdy plastic. The seam lines on the handles are sharp. After the seam lines are scraped and sanded down, the handles feel really good. The plane I received had a manufacturing defect with the frog. The frog was not properly machined where the frog contacts the lateral adjustment lever. This contact surface on the frog should have been machined deeper. As a result, the lateral adjustment lever sits too proud and makes contact with the chip breaker (a.k.a. cap iron). I’m sending the plane back under warranty because of the frog. I can’t comment as to the quality of the stock blade (a.k.a. cutter). If you factor the purchase price, the time required to tune/true the plane, and choose to replace the blade & chip breaker with a quality aftermarket replacement, you might be better of paying a few dollars more and simply buy a WoodRiver #5 bench plane. It simply comes down to how much your time is worth to you. Overall, I would probably not recommend this plane to others.

You get what you pay for
Not a horrible plane, but if you’re expecting precision you need to look elsewhere. The sole of mine came in mostly flat - acceptably flat at this price point. The blade is a mere .075” thick so it won’t be very reliable in heavier use as the chip braker doesn’t really do much to support it. The cap out of the box was nowhere near square and i would have to do some significant grinding to make it better. All those things are workable for somewhat detailed work. However, the thing that can’t really be worked around is that the sides of the plane are not square to the sole. If i were to only use this as a surface plane it might be ok. However, i was hoping to use this in conjunction with a shooting board to get precise square edges on thin stock (3/4”). Not gonna happen, as it would be about 2 degrees off with that plane. Using only the sole and surface planing would be ok just not referencing the sides. Looking into a $300 version that would be super accurate

                      Poor Machining
I was hopeful when I bought this, before returning it days later. The blade wasn’t square, and the frog doesn’t sit square. If you’re a metal worker you could probably fix these issues, but this plane only provided lopsided results.

                        Great value for the price
Overall, great value for the price. I'm using this plane to surface a bunch of very rough, weathered timbers, and it cuts well after merely adding a secondary bevel to the edge. The length is great for flattening a long board. One issue I've found is that the lateral adjustment lever isn't quite tight enough, so I have to straighten the blade frequently. The plastic handles aren't as comfortable as wood, but they're okay. The depth adjustment is quite precise; I can get nice, semi-transparent shavings. DISCLAIMER: I bought the plane elsewhere because it was available in-store. (Home Depot's price is better, though.)
