What age range is this good for?

    Answer This Question

Hi! The recommended age for all of the STANLEY Jr wood building kits are ages 5 to 12 years old. Kids aged 5-8 will probably need some guidance when building the Bird feeder, but older children would enjoy the challenge even if done solo. Thanks for your question! The STANLEY Jr Team

The directions for this item are in drawn pictures. My young grandson (almost 7), who is pretty headstrong, learned a good lesson about slowing down, following directions and listening. The holes are predrilled in the wood (except where we had to add our own from putting some things backwards), so screwing the screws in was pretty easy for him. We used our wood glue as he wanted to use this outside rather than just for decoration. Part of the lesson was when he learned we couldn't "unglue" what he'd put together. He did almost all of it himself (we still have to paint and seal). While the "overhang" is on the wrong side and the plexiglass piece is now on the outside, we can and will make it work. I'm proud of his going the distance to finish the bird feeder, painting will be done on his next visit!

Bought this bird-feeder kit for a project that I could work on with my 5 year old son. I'll start with the positives: 1. It comes with everything you need to build this bird feeder, except the tools. 2. The only tools required are a phillips screwdriver, hammer and some wood glue. 3. It did provide my son and I an hour of construction time together. 4. It also provided my wife and son an hour of painting and arts time together. The negatives: 1. The instructions are ok, but could have been better. We put the back wall on backwards and didn't notice till it was time to fasten the roof down. The one pre-tapped hole for the roof screw was on the wrong side. I had to drill another hole for my son to start the roof screw for the back wall. 2. The wood feels like balsa wood, if you're not careful you'll strip the screw holes, or crack the wood with the hammer, and it won't be long before it starts to rot. 3. It said this kit was for 5+ age group, but at 5 my son struggled with the screw driver, and hammering. This project would be better for like 6 or 7+. We ordered this bird feeder kit online. It arrived on time, was packaged well, and was not damaged in shipping. For the price it's not a bad kit, just pay attention to the things I called out above, and you'll be fine. it was a nice bonding experience with my son.

What fun we had with my Granddaughter helping her build her very own bird feeder. The instructions were clear and parts fairly well identified. The real wood wood parts held up well to her hammering and attaching the various pieces. With a little woodworkers glue from grandpa, even the feeder tray edge went together well and is solid. Real wood makes for real fun in this well designed Stanley kit. With our adult "oversight," she was able to assemble the kit, follow the instructions and identify various screw sizes.

This kit seemed like a fun project, so I picked it up. While it's not horrible, it isn't exactly great. Many of the holes don't line up quite right, the hinges are shoddy, and the paint that's included doesn't even start to provide enough coverage. Most of the screws required adult strength and/or a drill to screw in, which I wouldn't be a problem if this weren't billed as project for kids. The hangar provided looks like it's made to hold a picture, so I'm not expecting much out of it. I'm going to try hanging it as the manufacturer intended, then when and if it falls (and if it survives) I guess I'll put a hook or something on the front as well as the back to try to distribute the weight better.

A really fun kit. My daughter (4) goes to all the Kids' Workshops, and loves them, so I thought this would be a fun daddy-daughter project. I figured she would be fine, even though it's rated 5+. Honestly, I think this was much harder than any Kids' Workshop project, and probably wouldn't be for a solo project until 6 or so. Not because the directions were difficult, but rather because the pieces were very small, and hard to manipulate into place, and it took a fair amount of time to assemble. The directions were actually all images, so reading isn't even necessary. It does come with paints and a brush, HOWEVER it wasn't nearly enough. My wife had some on hand, so we just used more colors, but my daughter wanted to paint it like on the box, and that wasn't nearly enough red (as you can see in her finished product) and however the green stars were added, is obviously not included either. Since the kit included paint(red, blue, yellow, and white), I'd rather have it look like something you could make, rather than my kid wondering why she can't have green stars on hers. The packaging and description make it seem like tools are included, especially the online listing, but on the box itself it does state that tools are not included, so make sure you have them ready to go. Sandpaper was included, and as previously mentioned, some paint and a brush, and there were a couple extra nails and whatnot as well. The box makes reference to an app, but I didn't even look at what that could possibly be, so I can't speak to that, other than you don't need it to build.

The kit was too difficult for my 6 year old grandson. There were many times he couldn’t do the fine motor tasks required and he usually has good fine motor skills. It was hard for his grandfather also.
