Product Overview

The Amerimax Stealth Drain Low Profile Catch Basin allows you to move damaging rainwater away from your home with the look of a buried drainage system, without the cost. The low profile design creates an unobtrusive look and can be covered with mulch, straw or stones for a subtle appearance, with no digging required. Simply cut the included 8 ft. L of 2 in. pipe to your desired length, screw into the supplied drain holes, extend the pipe to direct the rainwater in your desired direction and bury under mulch, stone or pine straw. Be sure to utilize both drain holes when utilizing under a 3 in. x 4 in. downspout due to increased water volume.
  • Diverts damaging rainwater away from your foundation
  • No digging required, low-profile design can be hidden by covering with mulch, straw or other landscape cover for an unobtrusive look
  • Compatible with all standard residential downspouts (2 in. x 3 in., 3 in. x 4 in. and round)
  • Made from durable resin to withstand the outdoor elements
  • Includes 8 ft. L of 2 in. flexible pipe to direct rainwater in any direction
  • Includes 2-drain pipe knockouts and a cap to close off 1-hole if only using 1-drain location

Easy to install; works for what I needed it for
I recently had my home's gutters replaced. When this work was done, I had another downspout added and also decided to make sure the water is routed away from the foundation instead of just spilled out nearby. We don't get a ton of rain here in the Bay area, but it's enough to mess with the foundation due to the expansive soil we have. This drain setup does the trick. I didn't need a 4" pipe to take away the water - this works just fine for the amount of rain we get. I've included photos showing my installation process. I also put a piece of brick in the middle of the basin to keep the grid from being caved in in case someone steps on it. This is unlikely given the placement, but another reviewer mentioned this as a way to make sure it doesn't happen, and I stole their idea. Since our soil drains very slowly and the slope of the ground in the area this drain services has a tricky slope, I made a small sump for the water to accumulate in and filled it with gravel. This is what the end of the hose opposite the basin feeds into. Another hint from me is that although I dug a depression for the basin to sit in, I left the top of it about an inch proud of the dirt so that it would be a little less likely to accumulate dirt and leaves. The hose is trenched and covered. The whole install took me about 30 minutes, including chopping through some old roots with an axe. I recommend this drain as an economical solution to route water away from the house.

    Worked well
Within an hour of installing this drain on my side patio, the sky opened up and a huge downpour ensued. I installed the drain at the end of my splash block, so that the hose would reach the downward corner of the patio. We had several inches of rain in an hour and the drain handled it beautifully. See picture.

This is one of the best products that I have purchased from the Home Depot. I recently purchased this produced and the ease to which it is to install is very simple, and the look is absolutely classic Two days of heavy rain really tested this product's ability to provide rain runoff away the house. The hose attachment is very functional as it long enough and durable to position it just right around and in the corners of the base of my home. You have met all my expectations. Thank you Home Depot, you did it again!

So far this catch basin has served its purpose under our new rain chains! We love how it looks, too. Only time will tell if it is big enough to hold the amount of water that we get.

I bought this down spout back in early May of 2019 and love it. Looks great. Product was really easy to put in place. It is sturdy and the hose holds up to being covered with river stones. There is plenty of hose to run it a distance you need. The decorative cover on the down spout area keeps out large items from clogging the hose outlet. One tip, put the back edge of the catch bin only an inch behind the gutter end. The rain can come out fast and reach to the front edge of the bin. You need more space in front than behind, so don't center it.

I was looking for a basin like this but everything I was looking at cost $50 up to $200+ and used the large 4-6" hoses. The one that used a 3 in hose was over $200. Even though I'm concerned about the size of this one keeping up with the flow in a Texas downpour, I found it very reasonably priced. Some of comments hit it for it's lack of sturdiness. You just paid $20 for it. It's sturdy enough for the price and if there is a concern with someone stepping on the center and breaking it, I plan to cut 2" PVC, perforate it and sit it in the cent for support. Could they have done that? Yes, but not for $20. The other concern I had was with the complaint about the hose that comes with it. Hard to install and nothing longer than the 8' that comes with it. I modified the basin to fit the length 2" hose I will need and shared it in photos below. In my case, I only had one situation where I needed longer than 8'.

This low profile catch basin could be a good solution for you, but it depends on how you plan to use it. I installed it next to my driveway to collect the water that settled next to my garage. I wanted a low profile so I didn't have to dig down 6-8 inches to install new pipe. However, it is plastic and could easily be damaged if stepped on. It also is not designed to be at ground level. Leaves and other debris can clog it easily. To solve these issues, I cut up gutter screens to place under the basin's cover to prevent large items from passing through the cover and placed brick pieces in the basin to support the cover in case someone steps on it. It appears to be working fine.

        Very effective and simple installation
I was skepitcal about buying this given a few other reviews here, but was surprised how easy it easy it was to install and test. If you have a level handy it makes setup even easier so the eater drains effectively.

          Great product!
There's really no need to over think it. Remove your old splash block and rake the area below your downspout level. I'm only moving water in one direction so I tilted it slightly toward the one drain pipe. I poured water into the Stealthdrain to make sure the pipe was sloping away and draining properly before covering it with mulch. The pipe was a little tight screwing in the connection but I cut a couple of small slits on both sides and easily threaded it into the hole. It would be nice if Home Depot would sell additional pipe as an accessory.

Plan on spending lots of time and frustration with this item. I bought this basin on 4/17/2018 and installed it last week as a single pipe catch basin under a gutter downspout. I gave it two stars because I finally made it work; otherwise it would have been one star. Good Points: It is attractive if you can keep it in place. Pretty cheap. Bad Points: Where do I start? It leaks. When you finally get the pipe into the hole in the side (not easy), pour some water in it. You will find it leaks heavily not only around the pipe, but also around the hole plug in the other side. Why? There is no seal. You are just putting a corrugated pipe through a round hole; on the other side, the plug only has a loose snap in connection. I finally gobbed silicone sealant all around the pipe and the plug to cut down the flow, but I am sure the seal is not tight. Next, it is difficult or impossible to get the basin to lie flat so that the water runs to the pipe and out. That is because it is so light in weight. All you have to do is touch the pipe and the thing pops out of level and maybe away from whatever you are trying to drain (e.g., my downspout). One solution is to fabricate some sort of U shaped spike to hold the pipe in place, thereby stabilizing the basin. That didn't work in my application, so I built a small wooden form slightly larger than the basin and dumped a gallon or so of Quikcrete in and pushed the basin into it. While wet, I leveled the basin in the cement, then canted it slightly so water would run into the pipe. The concrete grabbed the basin's feet on the outside securely enough to hold it in place. Did you read the "Question" here where someone asked if you can get more pipe if you want a drain line longer than 8 feet? You can't. Or, I should say, you can't unless you buy another basin kit and throw away the basin (you will have to tape the two lengths of pipe together because there are no connectors). I needed more than 8 feet so I dumped my drain pipe into a larger 4" solid pipe to carry it my required distance. Fortunately, at that point of junction, both my pipes were above ground and pointed downhill. If your connection is underground, you will need to find a way to join the two dissimilar pipes together underground (lots of tape?) so they don't get full of dirt and/or leak underground in a bad spot. So, if you want to make this work, you have to add a few more items: Sealant that is compatible with this basin/pipe material (I'm not sure what--it's not PVC); some sort of ground stakes to hold the pipe stationary, or cement and a wood form; maybe more pipe and tape to get more than an 8' drain line. Good luck DIYers.

Seemed like a great idea for drainage. But the drainage holes and hose diameter are TINY. No way it could handle anything besides a very light rain shower. I returned it and bought another solution.

                Not as good as NDS
Material is a bit fragile. Grate is soft and might break when stepped on. Quality is not as good as NDS. Will work for my intended use.

                      It leaks
I was so happy to find this. I connected a couple and noticed that it leaks where the tube connects to the catch basin. Wish it has a different way to connect that was leak proof.

It does not keep up with a heavy downpour in Florida. Water overflows from the box. Also, I ordered two and the round circle that is used if you only want one long tube was not enclosed with either kit. I had to cut the tubes in half and use two short ones instead. It does not reroute the water pushed into the tubes as far as needed. The concept is good. I will try to purchase more tubes to connect to the ones that came with it.

Without using waterproof adhesive to seal the gap between the square catch basin and the accordion tube, water leaks out of the catch basin instead of flowing through the tube. Also need to fashion a screen over the tube to reduce soil accumulation and reduce unintentionally providing a comfortable home for critters.
