13 in. 12 Amp Electric Scarifier + Lawn Dethatcher with Collection Bag

Drought killed my lawn, have heavy that h and dead grass everywhere. The sun joe did an excellent job in removing both. Both attachments are easy to install and work with. Used the sunjoe to remove the thatch and my lawn mower and a rack to pick it up.

I was so impressed the amount of debris it dragged out.

After reading dozens of reviews I decided to pull the trigger on the Sun Joe 13 in detacher. Said it was fairly straightforward, although I did have to buy 12 guage extension cords. Following the advice here, I did not bother using the Sun Joe bagger. I ran the detacher on setting (+) 10, bagged with my Honda mower, ran the dehatcher on the (+) 5, bagged again with the Honda mower. I also ran the scarifier this is a test and I think I'll use it when I actually seed. I found leaning slightly forward with the rear wheels barely off the ground allows the blades to dig in and pull the deatcher / scarifier along. The worst part is managing the cord while using the Sun Joe.

Every lawn needs to be de-thatched at least twice per season and scarified for seeding and or knocking down worm hills. I owned my this product for just over two years and totally abused it renovating my 4500 Sq. Ft. lawn. It served me well and performed as it was designed. A couple months ago I was working on detaching a small part of the lawn that was particularly straw-like and the manginess began to smoke. I turned the machine off and thought I had just over-worked it. I waited 10 minutes and tried again, the same smelly smoke. I waited another 10 minutes thinking it was over-heated and the over-heat protection had kicked in. I gave up on it and took it apart to see if it was grass filled, which it was, and hoped a cleaning would fix it. It did not! A long story short after my playing around with it I ripped the motor out and found the carbon brushes had completely wore down and not touching the motor. I looked for replacement brushes, but could not find then anywhere. Sun Joe does not sell them. So I tossed the machine out and went and bought a ne machine from my local HomeDepot. I managed to finish the detaching I started doing and move to another really bad section that needed real work. It was "slightly" moist soil, but the Sun Joe tore through it with great ease. The underside was caked with dirt and I scraped most of it off and hosed the rest off. The next day I turned on the Sun Joe and within 1 minute the new machine stopped suddenly. I thought it was a loose cord, etc, but all that was all working. I re-started the machine and it ran for ~10 seconds and then it stopped. I gave up and returned the machine to HomeDepot and vowed not to buy it again. So the post-mortem for this is, - the brushes are as good as the warranty period and you cannot replace them without tearing the machine apart. - The electronics, yes electronics, in the Sun Joe is NOT protected from normal washing of the machine. Sun Joe has a third party Printed Circuit Board that is an over-kill for the job it has to do. One of the chips is a programable logic array that seems to be weird. Some design recommendations for the machine are, - convert to brushless motors - encapsulated the PCB so it is watertight - Allow for rear discharge, much like some mowers have. (The bag discharge is TOTALLY USELESS and gets filled with a couple seconds of normal de-thatching.) Pics and video clips below.

Really as impressive as the YouTube videos make it seem. I used the scarifier attachment and it is better than a power rake or rake blade sold for mowers. New tool for annual maintenance and save me from replacing my lawn. Con...it is corded buuut still definitely worth it.

After living at our home for 5 years and never bagging grass clippings, this makes the first time dethatching my lawn, front and back yard, and the results were amazing to see the amount of thatch/dead grass brought up...some 12 bags. Following up he dethatching with furtilizer, over seeding and morning watering has resulted in a lush, dark green lawn and one of the few lawns on the block with no dandelions. I am very happy with this dethatcher and looking forward to many years use.

Works great! It's not quiet, but it does the job very well.

Works well . It does a good job of evenly detaching your lawn. It has sufficient power. I threw away the bag because it just clogs up the machine I would rather rake it up
