When I use it it will work for a little bit then it will cut out
This machine is a plug-in to an electrical outlet. The handle must be held while simultaneously pushing.
Adjust the wheel height. Sounds like you are cutting at a low gross height on dense and damp grass. Cut grass at a higher adustment..

"Small lawn" is specified. About how many square feet is the maximum yard size recommend? My combined front, back and side yards are about 2500 square feet. The yards are level. I usually mow every week or two.
I bought this one 3 years ago to s Cut around tge pool. The area is about 800 Sq feet and all hill. My wife still uses it to cut the grass. It was a steel for $99. It was a good investment for us.
This mower can handle the square footage as long as you have the time. The more important issue is how far from your nearest electrical outlet. A 100 foot 12/3 extension cord can easily be $120; that's more than the mower. (I have found mine to be very handy for the small yard I'm using it on.)

would if affect the performance of the machine if you were to cut out a side discharge in the plastic frame
