This is a tiller that you plug in with a cord and does not use batteries. Sun Joe does have a tiller that uses batteries for about $250 at Home Depot.

Sorry it took me so long to answer your question. I finally had a chance to see if I could find anything about the motor, I’m sorry to say I couldn’t find any info. The only info I could find was mine was made in China. I took a pic of the label that’s on the motor housing, hope you can see it clear. I tried to preview it and couldn’t

I’ve read this works better on wet soil. If this is electric, is it safe to use when the soil is damp?

It is designed to be used outside in damp conditions, but I would make sure that the extension cord you attach it to is plugged into a GFI outlet, just to be safe.

A 16 gauge at 50 feet is okay. However, I would use a 14 gauge. Personal preference only. More than 50 feet, use a 14 gauge.

Used on sod and did the job
I purchased because I wanted to dig up a section of my lawn that was uneven and filled with weeds. While it did take a while, it did a great job of cutting through the sod. I did have to rock back and forth on spots as it wasn’t heavy enough to cut through the thicker parts easily. In another section of my lawn where I had already smothered the weeds down to dirt, it cut through like a breeze, very happy with the purchase. For the price it did a great job.

Light enough for me to handle, and strong enough to churn up virgin clay soil that has never been touched before. It was so compacted, I could not put a hole in it with a shovel. Did a great job on mixing clay soil with aged horse manure. Works fine. Easy to put together (the handle). Glad I got this, there was no way I could have handled one of those super big machines. Kicks out small stones. It does toss around the soil, but, they all do that. Good price, affordable and good purchase. Delivered with no problem. Have had this for about a month and have churned up the soil many times. The grass covering was first removed by someone I hired to do this. I wore my Croc shoes, expect to get dirty. s My feet and shoes clean up fine. It is well worth it.

I bought this tiller with the intention of tilling up my very sandy backyard to prepare for laying sod. The tiller works beautifully and has plenty of power to get the job done.

Big product in a little package..
Big product in a little package--we have been using this little giant for 3 weeks, first to remove grass and then to break up our tough North Carolina clay. The photo doesn't show the entire project as we are now on our third home. We first started with my home, moved on to the neighbors and then our other neighbor and we are all preparing our lawn for new yukon Bermuda grass. We have basically reshaped both properties taking one section at a time. Moved tons of soil to lower sections and build up other sections along with screening every inch. SunJoe's tiller has an amazing amount of power and never once has it bogged down and there is so much clearance between the tines and the upper shield that even the largest brick never jams the unit. We have had problems with other cultivators where a little rock would jam the tines and it's such a pain to remove. We have more than received our money's worth from this tiller and if it breaks, then I would purchase another. Sun Joe knows where to put the money and where to cheapen up which to me is the best value our of any piece of equipment I've ever purchased. You can't go wrong and if there are any complaints in the reviews, I would skip on to the next. The size of the tiller is the same as a metal rake, wherever your rake fits, this will too. One more thing, it works best when pulled in reverse and we have learned to push down slightly to allow the machine to pull itself forward. You'll figure out your own techniques by allowing the machine to teach you how it would like to be used for best efficiency. If you fight it to work the way you want it to work, it will fight back and slow your process.

Easy
Had an old green machine tiller and it threw a rod 2 years ago. My husband bought this for me for my birthday and it's a beast. I was surprised by the power and ease of this tiller. You do have to stop and clean it once in awhile. It doesn't bog down but does get caked up, but so did my old gas powered tiller. I have a garden that I have used and it went through it like butter. I am also making my garden larger and it eats through the grass new area with no problems. Has even cut through inch thick roots. It does bounce a bit, but that's part of tilling. Have used it for 2 days and tilled an area of 20x6 feet in about 45 minutes. As long as it keeps working I'm highly impressed. Like it much better then my old gas powered green machine tiller.

Great tiller/Cultivator
I am a 62 year old female, and I found this to be lightweight, and very easy to use. It has the right amount of power to cut through clay and rocky soil without damaging the blades. Easy to control and direct forward, backwards, and sideways. I've always preferred electric instead of batteries or gas products. You won't be disappointed with this tiller!

Better than I imagined!
I had a 30-year-old mantis tiller given to me, it could not touch our heavy clay soil. I ordered this tiller with the expectation that it would not do much better. Boy was I surprised! This tiller brought back my gardening ambition. In my existing beds it did a phenomenal job, but it also worked well in creating some new beds where previously grass and farm weeds were growing. I would certainly recommend this tool to others .
