Clarification, my barn doors are not a solid slab dor; they are hollow and weigh approx 33lbs. My question on the closure piece is regards that I see multiple closure hardware configurations each with a weight range for the doors, I presume for proper closure force. I do not see a door weight range that matches my door. Hence, seeking to determine if higher or lower is the best choice.

I'm not sure I fully understand the question. I used the soft close on two 36" solid wood panel doors, a pair of them on each door. The doors probably weigh 40 pounds or more and are hung on standard barn door rails and bearings. The soft close devices work perfectly. A little tricking finding the hex socket (allen) screw to lock the soft closes devices on the guide rail because the screws are in the back. It helps to set the allen wrench in place before placing the soft close on the rail. Hope this helps.

Nobody at Home Depot knew anything about getting parts except for a complete door kit. I needed additional rail brackets and had to make them myself.

No, you do not need to remove the rail to install this system. It is very easy to install. I installed one two years ago and it works great. We open and close our door several times a day; the system is very durable. Once you try soft close, you will install one on every barn door you own. Once installed it is barely visible.

You don't have to take the rail down. The unit brackets fit over the rails. The hard part is to find the allen screws in the back, but you can do it. It helps to put the allen wrench in first if you can and then install the glide. They work really well.

Good morning Cottonman, No, you do not need to take down the rail to install the soft close kit.

You do not need to take now rail. You do have to remove the anti jump books. Circular discs located on top of door meant for keeping hangers from jumping off the rail. You will put them back on once soft close is installed.

The kit comes with instructions that are adequate enough to get through the install . But it's essentially attaching the soft close mechanism to the top rail. Then you'll need to pre-drill a few holes in the top of your door and attach the "catch tab" with the included screws. Shouldn't take more than 10-20 minutes per side. Depending on your door setup you may need to remove the door from the track first.

difficult. I could not use the screws that were provided. I had to use hex head screws

Forgot to mention that my rail holes did not line up with studs so I added a ledger board behind rail to attach. So this did bring out my rail position from wall about a half inch longer than if you had affixed the rail directly to wall

Approximately 1 1/2 inches. So add a 1/2 x 2 board on each side of back of door if using for a bathroom to fill in the gap a nd give privacy .you will still have about 1/2 inch gap to allow for getting past door trim. I painted the board to match door color.
