Product Details

Premium Back Draft Damper is installed into ductwork to prevent unwanted outdoor drafts from entering into your bathroom fan, kitchen fan, clothes dryer, etc. Ultimate one way air flow valve allows air to flow out but not back in. It does not rust or require any maintenance. Non-mechanical in-line one way air flow valve that requires minimal pressure to operate, has no moving parts. Sized slightly less than the internal diameter of the duct to slip easily into duct. Rubber gasket provide a friction fit and air-tight seal. Eliminates cold air back drafts in the winter saving heating loss. Eliminates hot air back drafts in the summer saving air conditioning loss. The damper consists of a specially formulated fabric sleeve attached to an outer metal sleeve. The fabric sleeve will allow air to pass through unrestricted in the desired direction of flow without reducing system efficiency. It is silent, produces no metal clanging sounds, tested to UL723 standards and can be installed in solid or flexible ductwork in any orientation. Installs easily - simply slide into duct. Specifically designed to stop back drafts from your clothes dryer, bathroom exhaust fan, kitchen fan, pellet stove, direct vent water heater and direct vent furnace. Available in 4 in., 5 in., 6 in., 7 in. and 8 in. sizes.

Q:Will it prevent odor from backdrafting through ductwork? Is it effective for indoor gardening?

    Answer This Question

    A:  Yes and yes

    by|May 4, 2023

A:  No it will not prevent anything from backdrafting. The material used for the inner cape does not drop down like show and doesn't create any seal or barrier.

      by|May 4, 2023

A:  No, it will not prevent odor or air from back drafting. The way it is glued inside the duct and the cloth material used make it impossible to self seal regardless of orientation. Look elsewhere.

Q:Can it be used in a range hood vent

        Answer This Question

A:  I would not recommend using a cape back draft damper with a range hood vent. Heat issues aside, grease and particulate would soon coat the damper, at the very least reducing its effectiveness, probably leaving a noticeable scent after a while, and at worse, creating a dust/lint and grease based fire hazard. I would recommend a least a passive butterfly valve damper. A gravity damper would be better. Most manufacturers will recommend products which are...acceptable. Also keep in mind that local building codes sometimes have more stringent requirements than IRC and may specifically require a gravity backdraft damper or a makeup air system (to prevent air from being pulled down through a chimney, back through gas appliance flues, through walls/moisture barriers, or through windows for example). If your range vent hood has a capacity of 400 CFM or more, IRC requires an interlocked (a.k.a automatic, synchronized, universal) makeup air damper system, with very good reason. You might also consider a makeup air system if the range hood is unusually noisy or inefficient (open a window to see if depressurization is the problem).

          Buyer Beware
What is pictured is NOT what you receive. The insert pictured in the description looks like cloth that should self collapse easily; what arrives is more of a stiff, plastic-coated fabric. As you can see from the attached picture it stands straight up and will not collapse onto itself, thus making it useless. I have already returned it.

          Needs some time to soften
Many complain about material being too stiff. It is at first but after warm steamy air flows thru for a while, the sleeve material flaps around and softens up. This should be stated in the description as it looks like they get a lot of returns due to how stiff it is. It does take a while especially when I installed it in sub 0 temps, cold makes everything stiffer. Well, almost everything. It also should state that it needs to be cleaned periodically instead of maintenance free, that's misleading

After looking at how it works, it is way overpriced and would NOT work very well at all. Also, it's supposed to removed and cleaned at least once a year, which was not stated on their product description.

Extremely disappointed…purchased 3 of these many years ago, nice fit with outside foam band making a good seal and inside material being soft and supple closing up nicely with with no backdraft… This is the reason I purchased again…2 problems… 1-pipe is the same size as vent pipe. There is no way it would fit inside the pipe as I assume this would be the correct install with outer sealing foam… 2- the material used for the backdraft prevent was so stiff, it would take a straight line wind to get it to even move, much less seal as it’s too stiff to fall down on itself leaving a gaping hole for air to bypass…… Don’t waste your time as you’ll be returning them like I did…

I bought this to replace one that had been in service for 12 years. The fabric had gotten little stiff and didn't close well. Since then they have improved the design allowing it to close even better. It's best to use this damper in a horizontal position with the seam at the top.

This inline damper has a fabric insert. Who would design such a folly? It needs to be inspected periodically for grease build-up. Now who would think to do that when it’s in an inaccessible area? A potential fire hazard! Returning it.

I was interested in this item to stop kitchen odors from my neighbor coming into my Apt. It just doesn't do the job. We tested it for a week and then removed it and tried something different. The concept makes sense but I think it requires a higher velocity of a draft in order to work.

Works exactly as advertised, excellent product. One point: virtually all air ducts have a slight ridge that runs lengthwise along the inside of the duct where the duct's metal edges are joined to form the tube. It may take a bit of hand manipulation to get the damper into the duct past this ridge, but it's readily accomplished. I had mine in in about 30 seconds.
