Besides insects will this prevent rodents (mice) as well? If not, what do you recommend?

Answer

Char, I bought two of these and put on both intake and exhaust pipe from the house. I did it because a mouse had entered and cost me a service call. Very pricey mouse. So, yes, they're sturdy and worth getting. You may have to get a reducer to fit the cap, depending on your set up. Home Depot sells them too. Have a critter-free Holiday! Jeff

This is probably overkill for roof vents that are likely to be 1 1/2" or 2". To use it anyway, you would need an appropriately-sized reducer (bushing).

Does this project keep out bees, wasp and/or yellow jackets?

They should, the spaces in these are 3/8 inch wide, which is pretty small, so they should keep out most normal sized bees like the kind you described.

I live in New England and there has been no issues in using these in sub-zero temperatures with my gas boiler exhaust or intake. Air flow seems to be exactly the same as it was before these were installed.

These vent caps were exactly what I was looking for. I had a new gas boiler system recently installed and they vented the system outside on the side of the house as shown in the image. But I was surprised to see that at the ends of these vents there was a star pattern used to keep you from being able to stick your hand inside, etc. The only problem was it still had spaces in it that were a good inch and a half wide, which would allow large insects and helicopters from trees, small leaves, etc. to easily go inside. So I looked for something that had more of a mesh on it that would keep smaller things out and that's when I found these. I simply taped them to the ends of the existing pipes with a couple of pieces of clear duct tape, I really didn't need to attach them any more secure than that, as long as they were held tightly against the end of the pipe I knew they would be fine. The openings in the mesh are only 3/8 of an inch which works perfectly for unrestricted air flow and yet still keeps almost everything out. In fact they were on when the city plumber came to do the final plumbing inspection and he said they were perfectly acceptable. And I actually like the contrasting white color against the black pipes.

(What's this)
Awesome; Grand; Easy Installation; Stainless! Absolutely in every meaningful way, the best termination cap I have ever installed on a water heater vent or furnace vent. The condensate drain is the very first perk I appreciate. I have a downward tilt at the end, but for anyone coming straight out the wall, this will be an asset which few termination caps have - if any. The stainless screen is great. I am tired of screen disappearing from moisture and gases. That is a given scenario with galvanized screens. The installation could not be easier. Give yourself 60 seconds once you get to the vent pipe. That includes putting cement on the fitting if you desire.

(What's this)
Many, if not all furnaces today take air used for combustion, and exhaust from that, from outdoors via two pvc pipes on the outside of the house. Pardon the basics, but many folk don't know. This vent cap is a great value because my yard has lots of small critters . One of them climbed into one of those furnace pipes; $200+ dollars later. a tech took it out, and the furnace works again. Now I know the price of chipmunks. The 3" cap slips nicely into a 3x2" pvc reducer (not included but cheap) and has a stainless steel grid that keeps out leaves, debris, and critters. It also has a small cutaway at the bottom (please orient it this way) to allow condensation to leave the pipe. I like that is larger than the pipes. That means that under the worst weather conditions, there is a bigger area that can "ice up" without affecting air flow. My pictures: one shows what I needed to do the job, one is the end result. I need to get another cap...I think I'll do the exhaust as well.

perfect fit
Snapped right into my exterior furnace exhaust pipes. I was shocked that I just had to pop them in and walk away. I never get that lucky! High quality. Make sure the condensation hole is facing the correct way to drain.
