(What's this)
Surprisingly solid, well-balanced, nicely finished mid-level Santoku set with sharpening steel and knife block -- at a great price. Santoku knives have less curve in the blade than typical chef's knives, and they're great for slicing and chopping, because the handle is offset (higher than) the blade edge. This set is unusual in that it includes a Santoku-style pairing knife, just 3.5", which I rarely see. The blades are x30cr13, which is common 420-type steel -- on the softer side, so easy enough to sharpen, but highly stainless, and they have what is called a granton edge -- little scallops along the sides that keep sliced foods from sticking to them. These came not shaving sharp, but more than sharp enough to pass the "tomato test," and include a very solid, nicely finished knife block, with the slots cut all the way through, which is great to allow any moisture to escape. My only potential complaint is that the handles, while very solid, are a bit slim for my larger hands. Perfect, though, for my wife. Highly recommended.

(What's this)
This 4 piece Santoku style stainless steel knife set comes with 3 knives, a sharpening steel, and a butcher block hardwood knife holder. This is the first knife set of this style that I have ever used, let alone owned, and I must say that I love them. As a matter of fact, I enjoy using them so much that they have now become my daily use knives. I really didn’t know what “ice tempered” meant when I received this set and had assumed it was just a marketing gimmick. I actually Googled it and it turns out that it refers to a manufacturing process unique only to stainless steel where the stainless steel is heated to 2000F and then rapidly cooled to -120F. The process is not meant to make the steel harder but rather to “optimize” its structure and thus make the cutting edge last longer between sharpening. Unfortunately, without metallurgical steel analysis I can only assume it is “ice tempered. The dimples along the blades’ edges are called “grantons” and are proportedly intended to help the knives slip through whatever they are cutting with greater ease. I remembered an episode of “American Test Kitchen” I saw awhile ago where they found during their testing that grantons, although they may look impressive, made no difference at all. I think they look cool. Putting all that aside, I have found these knives a pleasure to use. They have a nice heft and feel great in my hand. The handle is some type of hard material bonded to the blade tang without the use of rivets. It is inlaid with additional pieces of stainless steel giving the knives a unique look. I don’t think they add any anti-slip properties to the handle. As with any knives I have ever bought, I had to give the edges a quick honing with the included steel to bring them to full sharpness - and they can be made razor sharp! While knives can be easily abused I was still surprised at the skimpy 30 day limited warranty. Overall, I am very happy with my new knives. They are imported.

(What's this)
The Home Depot home shipping option was very well timed arriving just before lunchtime thus giving me some new knives to try out. The large knife easily sliced through the Gruyere cheese and it was a pleasure to use. The knife is well balanced and the handle comfortable to hold even if it is slightly smaller than what I have been used to up to press. The knives are all well made and each of the handles is roughly the same size. The sharpness of the blades surpasses everything I have used before - and I thought I had sharp knives. These blades are, literally, razor sharp and that edge is best maintained by hand washing and drying the knives as opposed to popping them in the dishwasher. It is just week since I received this knife set and I can confirm that all of the knives work well on a variety of raw vegetables, meats and fish. The knives sliced through all meats and produce with such ease that the only concern I had was to avoid inadvertently slicing through me! The knife block is heavy enough not to be a tipping risk and the base of the block has four spongy rubber feet to protect the counter top. Removing each of the knives means using finger tips until the handle is separated from the crowding of the other handles but the technique is easy to learn. With careful use and cleaning I think it will be quite some time before I need to use the sharpening steel in the set. Bonus! There is a Top Chef recipe for paella in the box!

This TopChef Santoku Stainless Steel 5-Piece Knife Set is a perfect fit for my kitchen needs. I've owned large but cheaper sets in the past and honestly did not use half of the knives. This set has three knives, a sharpening steel, and the block. For me this does the job nicely plus saves me some counter space. These knives are well balanced, super sharp, and feel good in the hand. The quality is very good. Personally I'd prefer to have a few really good knives over a bunch of average one.

(What's this)
Santoku Stainless Steel 5-Piece Knife Set I wanted a smaller knife set since I had limited counter space, and this set is just right for me. I find I don't use all the knives in the large sets. 2 or 3 become my favorites and I reach for those every time. I jumped at the chance to own a knife set of this quality, but at Home Depot prices! When the knives arrived I was not disappointed! As a former retailer, I know the longevity of Stainless steel sharpness depends on the hardness achieved. Most knives sold are very sharp, like these, but how long they stay sharp is the real question. The higher the temperature to which the steel is raised, plus the lower temperature the steel is plunged to, results in superior hardness. The hardest well honed steel, stays sharpest longest. Of course this knife set has many other attributes, like good balance, and a comfortable grip which are also important, and makes this a great set!

These knives do an excellent job for their intended purpose of slicing, dicing and mincing.” The knives are razor sharp, sleek and stylish looking with handles that are non-slip. Also included are an 8 inch sharpening rod and a wood block. Santoku is Japanese for “three virtues” or “three uses” which describes the slice, dice and mince tasks these general-purpose kitchen knives are designed for. You get three knives of different lengths: 7 inch,(chef knife) 5 inch (utility knife) and 3.75 inch (paring knife). After washing and drying them thoroughly I used them to prepare my meal and I found them all to be very effective. However, I find the handles narrow and somewhat uncomfortable. This made controlling the knife awkward. But that is the Santoku Japanese philosophy; that the width of the handle matches the width of the blade. Those with small hands shouldn’t have any issues handling these knives but if you have medium-large to large hands you may find the handles too small.

(What's this)
"Top Chef" is a TV show that has been on the air for 16 seasons. Longevity like that means they are doing something right and when they choose a set of knives to put their logo on, you know it has to be a good product. Such is the case with this Santoku Stainless Steel 5-Piece Knife Set. I knew as soon as I opened the box and started taking the blade protectors off of these knives, that they were exceptional for the price range. They are solid, heavy (but not too heavy), and they are perfectly balanced. They are clearly, first-rate knives. They come out of the box extremely sharp. The design is a Japanese style and they look fantastic. They are beautifully polished and they have those distinctive dimples in the blade that are generally associated with very high-end knives As you can see in the picture, a sharpening rod accompanies the three knives. I've discovered that using the sharpening rod before each use is very helpful in that you don't have to do much to get them razor sharp again. I haven't done it yet, but I've read that you should also have them professionally sharpened occasionally. The solid wood knife block is well made and looks great also. Put them all together, place them on your counter top and you will have a handsome knife set worthy of display.

I was very impressed by the Santoku Stainless Steel 5-Piece Knife Set, a nice looking contemporary knife set. The knifes come with a wooden block to store the knifes, which has a swooping arc to it, fitting a more modern look. The knives themselves are shorter Santoku style knives and mean to be used for softer type of cuting. I used it to slice though some Tomatoes and the razor sharp blades went right through the fruit. They are not meant to do heavy cleaving, please use a chef type of knife for this. The design of the knives is great, they are sharp, well balanced and the handle feels good when working im the kitchen. Th different knifes in an added bonus. Overall a great looking knife set and storage block.

(What's this)
To paraphrase Forrest Gump, our old knife set was "like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get". There's like twelve knives in there and they never get put back in the same place. And, I didn't realize how dull they were getting, despite regular use of a knife sharpener. The Santoku set is three knives and a sharpener, plus a nice wooden knife block, so you always know which knife you're getting. I was going to do the thing where you throw a bell pepper up in the air and let it fall on the knife, but my wife came in and made me put the bell pepper back in the fridge. So I cut paper instead of pepper, photo below. Anyway I really like these knives, they have a very solid, comfortable grip, they are well balanced, and exceptionally sharp.

(What's this)
Top Chef Santoku Stainless Steel 5-Piece Knife Set is a three knife set, with a sharpening rod and a wood storage block. The knives are classified as a large paring knife, a utility knife and a 7-inch chef's knife. They are stainless steel with a contemporary look. Santoku knifes are designed for prep work, slicing, dicing, mincing, designed for cutting soft ingredients such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. They are not for cleaving or deboning and should be used on a wooden cutting board. The blades are thinner and shorter than other traditional chefs knives. They aren't heavy, but there is weight in the handle and the thin blade is designed for slicing action. These knifes curve in the blade isn't as pronounced as with other traditional prep knives which use more of a rocking motion on the cutting board. They also have less of a taper resulting in a broader tip point end. This is the Santoku style. The handle on the knives are made of a hard material and are comfortable in the hand. The knife styles are one of personal preference as they all get the job done. Finally, this set comes with a sharpening rod and a solid wooden storage block that is compact, four inches square around and about seven inches high. Its small enough to fit on the counter top near you to quickly access and display. These are reasonably priced home kitchen knives that look good and are up to the task.
