Questions & Answers

The electric start is completely charged but nothing happens when I turn on the key

I replaced the fuse that was next to the battery but it did not help.
Asked by: Joan
Here's the main problem with electric start lawn mowers. The battery is located UNDER the mower deck. When you wash (hose) the underside of the mower, water gets into the area where the sealed 12v battery is located. Location is usually behind the rear plastic or metal blade guide which gives the mower the round shape for proper mowing. The problem is the battery area is NOT waterproof. The battery is sealed, but NOT the terminals. When water comes in contact with the terminals, they will soon corroded away and, when wet, will short out the battery if positive side goes to ground. If you have an electric start mower, do not flush the underside with water. If you want to keep your electric start, use a plastic puddy knife to scrape the underside, but do not use water. This is, of course, is a very bad design, but it appears all mowers use this design if the chassis are made by MTD. I've had 2 mowers with electric start succumb to this malady. Mower still rope starts though. The cure for bad design is that terminals and connectors need to be insulated from any water intrusion.

got the mower ok and love it but the key was missing anyway toro will send me one? i just got the mower on the 21rst so would like to be able to use the electric start
Asked by: dave
Dropping the electric start equipment below the deck was an unnecessary and stupid mistake because it removed two thirds of the space available for rearward ejection of clippings, causing continual blockages. The height adjusters required excessive force to move them and the electric start stopped working after less than two months use. These three issues alone made the machine unusable by my wife who used to enjoy mowing. In addition the air filter cover fell off and was lost and the side ejector door and the device to hold it open had to be replaced as they kept falling apart. The engine sounded like a rattling box of bolts if it was about to stall and was extremely hard to restart after it stalled. My previous Toro gave 18 years of trouble free service but this machine is being returned after one season because Toro refused to honor their warranty.

I looked at a lot and decided since I had back issues to go with the Personal Pace Self Propelled with Electric Start. I am so glad we did. I put it together myself with attaching the handle cover for use or not with the bagging attachment (which I do not use since I mulch the clippings for fertilization). It was easy to setup. The instructions are pictures with no words so it may take some others a little more time to attach everything. Not a showstopper for me. I charged the electric start for 24 hours as suggested. After filling up with oil and gas, I tried to start it. It started the first push of the start button. It mowed and mulched as expected. I adjusted to a height of 3.5" since I have Fescue. The only issue I had was that two height adjustment covers broke. I contacted Toro and already sending me four replacements free of charge. I would recommend this product for sure.

The mower was very easy to start. easy to use, had plenty of power, and did a good job on my small yard. I changed the oil at the end of last season. Could not find a drain plug so I turned the mower over and drained the oil from the fill tube. After I added new oil and filled with gas, it would not start. All I could get was an occasional sputter. I took the shrouds off, removed the carb and found one chamber in the carb float filled with gas. I can recommend this mower because the failed float is probably an unusual failure but I expect my mower to last much longer than 3 years before having problems. My previous mower, a 21" self-propelled Honda mower w/gcv160 engine, lasted 15 years with no problems. Two years ago I replaced the engine stop cable, drive cable and transmission shift cable then gave the Honda mower to my daughter. It is still runs great. My next mower will be powered by a Honda engine for sure.

Some background: I had a Toro recycler for seven years that I loved! Very reliable and the personal pace feature was a perfect fit for me. With my advancing age I decided to replace it with an electric start model. Tugging on that cord was becoming an issue.Delivery was going to simplify the whole process. Wrong! The first mower they shipped to me failed to arrive. We later learned that the box was damaged and had to be returned to Texas. I live in the Midwest. The second mower has been a disappointment right out of the box. I did everything right-fresh fuel, etc. and it runs rough--very rough! It revs and backs off over and over again-really annoying! So now what do I do? It might be an easy fix, but I don't know a carburetor from a caramel roll. Phone calls and visits to the store, have yielded little help

I bought it one year ago and am very very dissatisfied. It is HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY!!! When the motor is on, pushing it forward is ok but backing it up and or trying to maneuver around trees is horrible. Pushing it without the motor running is also horrible and very hard. I am a very strong person, a long time athlete, runner and triathlete (ironman) so I am not some weakling... Sometimes when I am trying to turn, the flap in the back digs into the lawn tearing the grass. When I first bought it, starting it was fine, but late last summer, starting it was hard, having to push the start button multiple times, same thing this spring. (yes, I use the recommended additive to the gas.) I have no way to get it back to the store for a refund...if I could I would. I am considering giving the darned thing away any buying something else...anything but another Toro. This machine does NOT meet my expectations and I would not recommend it.

First no rope pulling. Just pull back the metal handle and push the blue button. No primer bulb to push or choke to set. See Photo. The battery is located at the back of the mower behind the bagging cover. A small charger is included to recharge the battery. Second no heavy mower to push. The mower is self propelled and only goes as fast as you want to walk. Very easy to control the speed. If you stop walking it stops moving. It's also simple to change from bagging to mulching. The bag is light and easy to remove. There is a lever that must be moved from bagging to mulching. See Photo. Finally cleanup is a snap. Simply connect your garden hose to the clean out connection on the mower deck. See Photo. Turn on the water and start the engine. Run both until the water running out from under the mower is clear. I have used the mower 3 times in 3 weeks and it has started every time without trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I looked a lot and glad I got the Toro 20334 Well, I looked around and read lots of reviews and I'm glad I got this one. Easy to set up out of the box and started right up after charging the battery overnight. When you add the enclosed oil, don't dump it all in. But check the dipstick 'cause for mine, it overfilled and I had to drain a little out. Mowing with it was a pleasure - no clumps - the Vari Speed rear wheel drive works great - easy and smooth around curves and circles - very easy to do back and forth maneuvers around trees and borders. I now realize that because the way the Vari Speed is designed, the rear wheel drive is better then a front wheel drive. So easy to run up to something like a tree and then just pull the handle back the drive stops, and it freewheels instantly so I can easily pull it back and then push back on the handle and it goes forward as fast or as slow as I want. Excellent design. I also have a Toro multi attachment weed whip (two years) that I'm very happy with - starts, runs and idles well.

Bought this 2 years ago for an older relative because they always complained about their old mower not having enough power for the wheels to turn so I thought this is self paced and 4 wheel drive and it might be better even though it cost more. I also noticed this didn't have a primer bulb and didn't need an oil change and would start easily without those things...I was skeptical but that's all they had in the store. The mower did start the first two pulls when brand new but the self propelling was really odd. The older relative said they could do it and it wouldn't back out easily and they were right. backing out is a lot harder than a regular mower because of the force of the belts. Also because of having 2 belts, it robs the blades of power so if the grass is a little tall and you're in recycle mode, the mower chokes. As for starting, the next season it took about 30 pulls to get it started and since there is no primer bulb, there was nothing I could do. This season, it took around 50 pulls to get it going.

Ran through 3 tanks of fuel and the mower stopped working. Took it back to Home Depot and they would not return it and said it had to be serviced. Claimed they cleaned the carburetor and would not return the machine. The lawn mower would not run through 2 tanks of fuel before the same problem happened. After having to empty the carburetor several more times on my own to get it to run for another tank of fuel, I contacted Toro and was told to take it to another authorized dealer for service and warranty check. I was told that this is not covered on warranty and have gotten the run around from Toro customer service. Not worth the money when yo have to keep paying for service after 3 tanks of fuel. Up to $250 in service bills and am giving up.
