Questions & Answers

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: veteran
I would change the oil at least yearly at the minimum even though it says no oil change needed but just to top it off. I don't care what they recommend a cleaner running engine will last longer than a dirty one. These engines are usually made to fail around 100 to 125 hours of use however. It is built into the plastic parts of the engine such as the camshaft and gears. Yes they are plastic so I would definitely change the engine oil yearly no matter what is recommended. We ......well at least I do......as consumers want longevity out of our mowers but they are a profit making businesses and want you to buy a new mower every 5 years. These are considered throw away mowers and usually when they are ready for major repairs they are not worth fixing when the bill hits 150 to 200 dollars or sometimes even more than a new mower. Think about it. Plastic internal engine parts. GM has used plastic timing gears since the 80s yet they were considered reliable. When I rebuilt my engines I always replaced the plastic that sometimes showed broken teeth and wear I replaced the plastic gears with Cloyes true roller and sometimes double roller timing chain and gears. Why......? Because they were a heck of a lot better in performance and more reliable. Not as quiet as plastic but definitely more reliable in my opinion as a mechanic. Plastic generates less heat and noise which is why they use them in the car and the lawn mower. It is a phenolic resin type plastic usually made to last around 5 years or 100 to 125 hours of use in the lawn mower. The reason they say just add the oil and not to change it is because they say less heat is generated by the engine because of the plastic overhead cam and gears, therefore the oil doesn't break down from the heat.......well.......I am sure that is true but you still have blow by from the piston rings I would think but I think they claim to have closer machined tolerances between the piston and the cylinder wall too, but for me I am changing the oil I have my own recommendations for longevity and the number one major recommendation is clean oil and a Pennzoil sae 30 weight in the summer months. But most people throw stuff away anyway after a few years and they are off to buy new........a small engine mechanic a retired veteran who has a lawn mower repair business in my county Has people who bring him mowers free that many times are usually only 2 to 3 years old but quit running. The people who drop them off don't even want them repaired because they want to go out and buy new. He usually changes the destroyed carburetor due to the ethanol in fuel and has it running like new or checks the internals like the plastic cam and gears etc. and has them running like new. So do I blame Briggs and Stratton for building a 5 year throw away mower.......? Not in any way. They know that most people don't want to change oil and they don't want a mower more than 5 years old so why make one that will last any longer anyway......? On their end it's .....smart .......very smart, but for the customer who wants longevity......MAN....... THAT SUCKS

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
The front wheel drive has little to no traction on uneven terrain (lawns with bumps, ruts and hills). It will suffice if you are cutting an even/level lawn/terrain. Otherwise, get a rear wheel drive or all wheel drive mower.

Asked by: ktel
Yes, completely assembled. You can just cut the box open, move the handle into position, then roll it out of the box. Add oil and gas, then pull the cord. It might take two pulls the first time, but this mower starts extremely easily. I started it accidentally once or twice with light pulls.

This lawnmower by far makes grass cutting more effortless with the auto forward assist movement I call it, I am cutting a 6800sqft yard in half the time. I can sit here and write all day of the pros, but I dont work for Toro. Cons, none so far.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Utilize only for front and backyard and started smoking after a year Firstly let me say I fully enjoy my Toro products when their working, unfortunately it appears the mower only after a year and half use developed either ring or valve issues resulting in billowing smoke. It appears it is still on warranty and my intervention is to take it into Richview Toro in Barrie for repair, let’s see if they stand behind their product and then I will be willing to express my opinion on the Toro Lawnmower

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use and reliable Here are my thoughts in no particular order: Popular model - had to go to two stores to find it in stock Lightweight - easy to lift and carry (with another person) and easy to maneuver Quick, easy setup - I took my time and had my son help me, but could have been cutting in 10 minutes if I did it all myself Starts easy - with a slow pull, second pull when new, first pull every time after that, even when I ran it out of gas Cuts evenly Many height adjustments - I cut at max height and it was higher than my lawn tractor I like the small storage footprint - I set the empty clippings bag on top of the mower for storage Could be better: I wish max speed was a little faster I can't store the mower upright when set to max height. The levers touch the ground. I have to lower the back wheels so the levers don't touch

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stows away well Almost always starts in one pull. I stow it vertically after every use and find it easy to collapse. On one occasion the handle to the pull cord caught between wheel and body and flipped back almost striking me. Changes I would make: more variability in handle angle, larger rubber wheels, more variability in deck height.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very easy to use The fold up storage feature is exceptional. Seems very powerful and easy to push with the front wheel drive. It was a great help on my sloped lawn. Fuel and oil are easy to reach and fill. Starting has been easy. Construction seems tough and durable. Overall, this seems like a quality machine and I look forward to to using it as long as I hold up.
