Questions & Answers

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
I just bought mine yesterday and I hate it. It's very hard to mow a straight line with this thing. The front-wheel drive makes it really squirrely because of how it pulls. Also, the run bar is very difficult to grab while compressing the drive bar as well. It's a thin bar and when trying to use less than full power it gets tedious holding it.

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: gean
I would change the oil at least yearly at the minimum even though it says no oil change needed but just to top it off. I don't care what they recommend a cleaner running engine will last longer than a dirty one. These engines are usually made to fail around 100 to 125 hours of use however. It is built into the plastic parts of the engine such as the camshaft and gears. Yes they are plastic so I would definitely change the engine oil yearly no matter what is recommended. We ......well at least I do......as consumers want longevity out of our mowers but they are a profit making businesses and want you to buy a new mower every 5 years. These are considered throw away mowers and usually when they are ready for major repairs they are not worth fixing when the bill hits 150 to 200 dollars or sometimes even more than a new mower. Think about it. Plastic internal engine parts. GM has used plastic timing gears since the 80s yet they were considered reliable. When I rebuilt my engines I always replaced the plastic that sometimes showed broken teeth and wear I replaced the plastic gears with Cloyes true roller and sometimes double roller timing chain and gears. Why......? Because they were a heck of a lot better in performance and more reliable. Not as quiet as plastic but definitely more reliable in my opinion as a mechanic. Plastic generates less heat and noise which is why they use them in the car and the lawn mower. It is a phenolic resin type plastic usually made to last around 5 years or 100 to 125 hours of use in the lawn mower. The reason they say just add the oil and not to change it is because they say less heat is generated by the engine because of the plastic overhead cam and gears, therefore the oil doesn't break down from the heat.......well.......I am sure that is true but you still have blow by from the piston rings I would think but I think they claim to have closer machined tolerances between the piston and the cylinder wall too, but for me I am changing the oil I have my own recommendations for longevity and the number one major recommendation is clean oil and a Pennzoil sae 30 weight in the summer months. But most people throw stuff away anyway after a few years and they are off to buy new........a small engine mechanic a retired veteran who has a lawn mower repair business in my county Has people who bring him mowers free that many times are usually only 2 to 3 years old but quit running. The people who drop them off don't even want them repaired because they want to go out and buy new. He usually changes the destroyed carburetor due to the ethanol in fuel and has it running like new or checks the internals like the plastic cam and gears etc. and has them running like new. So do I blame Briggs and Stratton for building a 5 year throw away mower.......? Not in any way. They know that most people don't want to change oil and they don't want a mower more than 5 years old so why make one that will last any longer anyway......? On their end it's .....smart .......very smart, but for the customer who wants longevity......MAN....... THAT SUCKS

I have owned many different lawnmowers over the past 55 years, but nothing compares to the ease of use, easy start, maneuverability, minimal storage space, and cutting quality of this lawnmower! Hands down the best mower on the market in my opinion! The large wheels on the rear, and the “touch control” of the front wheel drive (drive bar underneath the handle bar) make this mower unbelieveably easy to maneuver around landscaping in any condition. The only improvement I could suggest would be to add a larger “sealing” strip where the lawn clippings bag meets the discharge chute cover to reduce the amount of grass blow-by into the face of the operator. But this issue is reasily remedied by buying a 6’ piece of 1/2” or 3/4” foam pipe insulation (used on copper water pipe in basements and attics) from HD, cut it to the width of the bag frame, and split apart to cover the top of the bag frame (where it meets the chute lid). This will eliminate any grass clippings blow-by. Use the remainder of the foam pipe insulation to seal the gap between your car’s front seats and the center console to catch dropped items like french fries, etc. Enjoy!

I like the fact that the belt is enclosed were no grass clippings can accumulate under the belt/transmission assembly cover. I like the fact that I can set it up to give the under deck a really good cleaning rather then use the deck wash all of the time. This mower has plenty of power which I really like and there were spots in my yard that was really tall. That is a real plus. After looking everything over and checking everything out this mower looks like it is made quite well and has an attractive look. I'm not sure if I like the "Starts Every Time" feature, but maybe after a few times starting my new mower I will get to liking it after using a manual choke for so many years. It will take some getting use to using the variable speed too since this is a totally different experience for me. It would be nice if this mower had a quick connect connector for the deck wash so we don't have to screw the hose in place each time.

My husband & I purchased it in August last summer. We previously had a Toro that lasted us 12 years, it was great. We thought we couldn't go wrong with the Toro. We used the new mower maybe 5-6 times before winterizing & storing it through the winter months. Now 9 months later, it will not start. He checked the oil, replaced the spark plug, tried sea foam. It started briefly & a puff of white smoke blew & the engine shut off again. We cannot take it back to Home Depot as we did not purchase the extended warranty & we are past the 30 day return policy. Toro wants us to take it to a certified dealer to look at it. We haven't even owned this mower for a full year & already we're having to take it in for repairs. After looking online it sounds like this is a common problem with the Briggs & Stratton engine. Please read the reviews on this web site: https://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/briggs-and-stratton.html?page=3 So disappointing that a Home Depot would even sell such garbage product. Save yourself the time & money, don't buy anything with a Briggs & Stratton engine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it just for the storage I really wanted to give it 5-stars because I LOVE this mower, but I'm going to 4 because after using it a few times, there is one thing that I wish was different and need to highlight: the front wheel drive. It would be perfect if it had rear wheel drive. The front wheel drive does have a weak grip, and it's kind of annoying, but by no means a deal breaker for me. I would buy this again in a heartbeat. I only highlight this for someone that might rely more on the self-propelled feature, as this does weaken it. Now that that's been said, I do love this lawn mower and highly recommend it. Odds are you're buying this for the storage feature, and yes it's everything you dreamed. Folds up for storage, and it's wicked easy to do. Just pull two pins, swing the handle, and tilt her up. The bag works well, as does the mulching. Haven't tried the side shoot but I'm sure that would be fine too. All-in-all, this was a great mower that is perfect for anyone that has limited storage or has to move a lot (IE military).

Too light bounces around. Paint coming off already. Turn to quick and makes stalling out sounds. Cheap foam around back door. Very cheap air filter, miss the older type. Definitely not the same Quality or concept. This will be my last Toro Purchase, time to find a new company with American craftsmanship and quality. My old one still runs and has original paint years later. Also old one still starts on first pull. However, the front transmission broke just like my other ones before it. I will see how long this front transmission last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I named mine 'Tank' Ive been holding off on buying a new mower because they are so expensive, after six months i broke down and bought this one and i love it. out of the box it was pretty much ready to go- just add gas and oil--which it came with a bottle of oil. My grass was 16" at places and it was very wet. I set the wheels to the highest setting n let tank do its job,, effortlessly it went right through the mess and left a pretty nice looking yard in its wake. It started on the first pull, Ive mowed four times on the same tank of fuel and still have more gas to go. I really like how the handle locks into place, it is very solid, Ive never experienced that before. I like the large wheels in the back, it makes lifting the front of the mower n turning it around very easy. Also, the speed of the mower was nice and matched my pace perfectly, i like that too. The added option of side or rear discharge is nice, i haven't used the bag yet for its winter here n the grass is soaked. Overall i am very pleased.

My grass was rather long and think. For the first cut, I put it on the highest setting and it handled cutting perfectly. This is the first lawn mower I've had that didn't bog down when cutting my grass, like I said, it's thick. I've lowered the cutting height just a bit and have cut twice more, again, it handled it great. The last time, I bagged the grass in my back yard and was pleasantly surprised. I only had to empty the bad twice, I would have had to empty the bag on my last lawn mower at least 3 times. It has started on the first or second pull each time. The SmartStow is awesome! Gives me so much more room than having to leave the handle down and the mower flat. This is also my first Self Propelled mower, will never go without it again. I highly recommend this mower, well worth the price.

An additional 1/2 second to document that almost all of the oil bottle that came with the unit would be required. 2nd issue - I wish it had a handle adjustment. only one angle and that angle is a little low. I have to bend over a little when operating it. That hurts my lower back and I am fairly short only 5'8". A taller guy is going to need to stoop.A speed adjustment on the self propel would be nice as well. Taller grass require a slower speed. These are all Troy issues and out of your hands. The upright storing is so nice. Now I have room to work in my shed. :) R.
