Questions & Answers

Does this model need a periodic oil change? Do you have to run the engine till all the gas is used up after each cut? Can it go backwards?

Asked by: veteran
I would change the oil at least yearly at the minimum even though it says no oil change needed but just to top it off. I don't care what they recommend a cleaner running engine will last longer than a dirty one. These engines are usually made to fail around 100 to 125 hours of use however. It is built into the plastic parts of the engine such as the camshaft and gears. Yes they are plastic so I would definitely change the engine oil yearly no matter what is recommended. We ......well at least I do......as consumers want longevity out of our mowers but they are a profit making businesses and want you to buy a new mower every 5 years. These are considered throw away mowers and usually when they are ready for major repairs they are not worth fixing when the bill hits 150 to 200 dollars or sometimes even more than a new mower. Think about it. Plastic internal engine parts. GM has used plastic timing gears since the 80s yet they were considered reliable. When I rebuilt my engines I always replaced the plastic that sometimes showed broken teeth and wear I replaced the plastic gears with Cloyes true roller and sometimes double roller timing chain and gears. Why......? Because they were a heck of a lot better in performance and more reliable. Not as quiet as plastic but definitely more reliable in my opinion as a mechanic. Plastic generates less heat and noise which is why they use them in the car and the lawn mower. It is a phenolic resin type plastic usually made to last around 5 years or 100 to 125 hours of use in the lawn mower. The reason they say just add the oil and not to change it is because they say less heat is generated by the engine because of the plastic overhead cam and gears, therefore the oil doesn't break down from the heat.......well.......I am sure that is true but you still have blow by from the piston rings I would think but I think they claim to have closer machined tolerances between the piston and the cylinder wall too, but for me I am changing the oil I have my own recommendations for longevity and the number one major recommendation is clean oil and a Pennzoil sae 30 weight in the summer months. But most people throw stuff away anyway after a few years and they are off to buy new........a small engine mechanic a retired veteran who has a lawn mower repair business in my county Has people who bring him mowers free that many times are usually only 2 to 3 years old but quit running. The people who drop them off don't even want them repaired because they want to go out and buy new. He usually changes the destroyed carburetor due to the ethanol in fuel and has it running like new or checks the internals like the plastic cam and gears etc. and has them running like new. So do I blame Briggs and Stratton for building a 5 year throw away mower.......? Not in any way. They know that most people don't want to change oil and they don't want a mower more than 5 years old so why make one that will last any longer anyway......? On their end it's .....smart .......very smart, but for the customer who wants longevity......MAN....... THAT SUCKS

How is traction with the front wheel drive versus the rear wheel drive recyclers?

It would seem with a bag it would start to lose traction with all the weight to the rear.
Asked by: Mainecoon
The front wheel drive has little to no traction on uneven terrain (lawns with bumps, ruts and hills). It will suffice if you are cutting an even/level lawn/terrain. Otherwise, get a rear wheel drive or all wheel drive mower.

Does this mower come assembled, I am recently widowed and need now before I purchase this mower
Asked by: ktel
Yes, completely assembled. You can just cut the box open, move the handle into position, then roll it out of the box. Add oil and gas, then pull the cord. It might take two pulls the first time, but this mower starts extremely easily. I started it accidentally once or twice with light pulls.

Recycler 22 in. SmartStow High Wheel Variable Speed Walk Behind Gas Self Propelled Mower is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 2521.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I named mine 'Tank' Ive been holding off on buying a new mower because they are so expensive, after six months i broke down and bought this one and i love it. out of the box it was pretty much ready to go- just add gas and oil--which it came with a bottle of oil. My grass was 16" at places and it was very wet. I set the wheels to the highest setting n let tank do its job,, effortlessly it went right through the mess and left a pretty nice looking yard in its wake. It started on the first pull, Ive mowed four times on the same tank of fuel and still have more gas to go. I really like how the handle locks into place, it is very solid, Ive never experienced that before. I like the large wheels in the back, it makes lifting the front of the mower n turning it around very easy. Also, the speed of the mower was nice and matched my pace perfectly, i like that too. The added option of side or rear discharge is nice, i haven't used the bag yet for its winter here n the grass is soaked. Overall i am very pleased.

My old mower broke over the summer and they are so expensive to replace--so i was lagging. Its been raining here- including today and my grass is apx16" in places. Did i mention that its soaked? I set the height at 4" and went to work, This mower didn't even hesitate as it pushed on through, i didn't even use the bag or side discharge and normally that would bog down a mower in these conditions. It started right up. I love the fold up handle also- you pull it up and it locks into place with none of that flimsy feel,, this unit is very solid- i named it Tank lol. I didn't experience and carb sputtering that others have mentioned but i only use 91 obtain also. It is a tad loud when its up to a fence or something but to me that's to be expected with this kind of power. I didn't have any issues with the speed of the mower- it was perfect. The staff at my local HD ' Fairfield, Ca, were great, I wished that i got their names so that i could of gave them some kudos, i did thank them and shook their hand before i left. Sorry so long, i don't normally do reviews.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it just for the storage I really wanted to give it 5-stars because I LOVE this mower, but I'm going to 4 because after using it a few times, there is one thing that I wish was different and need to highlight: the front wheel drive. It would be perfect if it had rear wheel drive. The front wheel drive does have a weak grip, and it's kind of annoying, but by no means a deal breaker for me. I would buy this again in a heartbeat. I only highlight this for someone that might rely more on the self-propelled feature, as this does weaken it. Now that that's been said, I do love this lawn mower and highly recommend it. Odds are you're buying this for the storage feature, and yes it's everything you dreamed. Folds up for storage, and it's wicked easy to do. Just pull two pins, swing the handle, and tilt her up. The bag works well, as does the mulching. Haven't tried the side shoot but I'm sure that would be fine too. All-in-all, this was a great mower that is perfect for anyone that has limited storage or has to move a lot (IE military).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Love Toro, just not this one! Bought this mower and right out of the box loved it until the second time I used it. While mowing, the self propel went out so I flipped it over thinking the belt might have broke or possibly jammed but there was nothing jammed and the belt was still intact. So I took it back and exchanged it for the same model since I was still within the 30 day return period and once again, out of the box it was great. This week I was able to cut half of my lawn when I ran out of gas, so I filled up the tank and tried starting the mower and it took about 20 minutes to get it started. Without a primer or choke, all I could do is pull the cord and listen to it sputter until finally it started up. So with all the pulls that it took to start the mower I guess the retract didn't like it very much because now my pull cord is hanging about 5 inches and will not completely retract. Luckily I am still under the 30 day return period so I will once again take the mower back, but this time it will be for a refund.

Purchased first one and after unboxing and fluid fill up it started on 3rd pull. The self propel feature did not work even though the lever and cable actuated correctly. Mower returned to store for replacement. Same model, same setup process, works as expected. Starts of first pull every time. Have run it 3+ hours now and am completely satisfied with it. Self-propel speed is very good. Large rear wheels are a nice feature. Rear bag is very easy to empty and re-attach. The SmartStow feature really frees up space when storing the mower. Easy cleanup. Good design, solid feel. Quality mower.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money I'm a single mother so spending $350 on a lawnmower is not an 'insignificant' purchase. Consumer Reports ranked this as their number 1 push mower and I have no idea why. It's a visually nice mower with lots of great features and that TORO name. They claim that it starts on the first try- which is true as long as you don't plan to turn it off and restart it anytime soon. Or to clean it directly after you are done mowing. On our FIRST day with this brand new machine it was turned off to move from the back yard to the front yard and t took at least 20 attempts to get it back on. The same thing after the yard was finished and we attempted to clean it. I read a review from a guy that said it's great as long as you don't plan to start it more then once a day and I thought he may be a tad dramatic. Nope. He was absolutely correct. For $350 and the Toro name I expect the mower to restart as many times as I need it to. A waste of money; it's going back. Lots of reviews on this problem if you do a quick search.

I purchase on April 15, 2018 and immediately took it home. Unboxed it and set up according to the manufacturer instructions. I used it the first time with no problem. The self propel was a little lacking and the bag was very small ( had to empty repeatedly) but overall not a bad value. The second time I used it I had to empty the bag more than 5 times for a less than 1/4 acre yard before I was even halfway through. After the second time of using it I used the “stow away “ feature to store it as space at my home is at a premium and that was a huge selling point. When I went to use it the third time. It ran fine for about 30 minutes then started to act as it were out of gas. Realizing it could be out of gas I added gas and then could not get it started again. When I approached the service desk at my local Home Depot the employees stated they had been having a lot of problems with this mower and suggested not to replace it. I was extremely disappointed in the fact it didn’t live up to what it claims. After all the claim it’s “guaranteed to start!” Do not buy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What you see is what you get (and it is good) Bought it about two months ago. One of the reasons is that my old lawn mower was very low and I wanted to keep the grass long during the dry season. My previous machine was also very small (only 19 inches) and I have a fairly big yard (~12,000 square feet total, front and back). The highest setting on this one is so high I seems the lawn has not being mowed (that's the setting I am going to use next year if the summer is very dry). Adjusting mowing height is easy (but I have never tried those with a single lever). Assembly was a piece of cake. Mowing is easier and faster now. I never had a self-propelled machine before but it took no time to get used to it (just one more level to handle). I have not tried the SmartStow feature (have plenty of space in my garage) but it was not a reason for me to buy it. I truly don't see the need to go for a fancier machine. I just wanted the cheapest (but good quality) mower in the 22-inch class and this one is doing just as expected
