Questions & Answers

The electric start is completely charged but nothing happens when I turn on the key

I replaced the fuse that was next to the battery but it did not help.
Asked by: Joan
Here's the main problem with electric start lawn mowers. The battery is located UNDER the mower deck. When you wash (hose) the underside of the mower, water gets into the area where the sealed 12v battery is located. Location is usually behind the rear plastic or metal blade guide which gives the mower the round shape for proper mowing. The problem is the battery area is NOT waterproof. The battery is sealed, but NOT the terminals. When water comes in contact with the terminals, they will soon corroded away and, when wet, will short out the battery if positive side goes to ground. If you have an electric start mower, do not flush the underside with water. If you want to keep your electric start, use a plastic puddy knife to scrape the underside, but do not use water. This is, of course, is a very bad design, but it appears all mowers use this design if the chassis are made by MTD. I've had 2 mowers with electric start succumb to this malady. Mower still rope starts though. The cure for bad design is that terminals and connectors need to be insulated from any water intrusion.

got the mower ok and love it but the key was missing anyway toro will send me one? i just got the mower on the 21rst so would like to be able to use the electric start
Asked by: dave
Dropping the electric start equipment below the deck was an unnecessary and stupid mistake because it removed two thirds of the space available for rearward ejection of clippings, causing continual blockages. The height adjusters required excessive force to move them and the electric start stopped working after less than two months use. These three issues alone made the machine unusable by my wife who used to enjoy mowing. In addition the air filter cover fell off and was lost and the side ejector door and the device to hold it open had to be replaced as they kept falling apart. The engine sounded like a rattling box of bolts if it was about to stall and was extremely hard to restart after it stalled. My previous Toro gave 18 years of trouble free service but this machine is being returned after one season because Toro refused to honor their warranty.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I bought the mower and used it for 1 day and it stopped running. Things like that happen sometime... I bought the mower and used it for 1 day and it stopped running. Things like that happen sometimes and the easy fix is take it back and get a new one. However, when I went back to get a new one I chose another model. I really had a difficult time with the personal pace feature. I'm sure with adjustment and use it would have got better but I didn't like it. You have to push the whole handle forward to advance the speed and full speed will drag you across the yard and lift the front of the mower. It's rear wheel drive which gives better traction but it also makes it hard to back up. You have to disengage the drive and push forward a little before you can back up. The one feature I truly LOVED was the electric start. Mine was charged right out of the box and it worked like a charm. When I took it back I got the regular Toro base model self propelled. It's FWD and has a regular bail type drive engagement handle. If they would put that electric start on that base model and sell it for about $359-$369 I bet it would outsell all their other walk behind models.

In cold weather, I use electric start twice in short bursts rather than one long push for quickest start. Sample defect - black plastic damper at rear of housing was bend in packing and has not straightened out yet. Does not appear to impact operation. Good mower.
