Q:How exactly does the latching mechanism work? Can you close the lid without locking it for trash pickup? Or does the lid automatically latch when you close it? If I'm worried about rats rather than bears, can I just this without the latch?

Answer This Question

A:  Our new "automated" bear carts, which are just now hitting retail, feature a "gravity lock" that automatically opens when the cart is raised by a garbage truck to be emptied. On the old carts, the latching mechanism closes automatically as the lid is pushed down, so will not work for your need. The item number for our new automated 64-gallon Toter Bear Tough cart is 79A64-A0209. Unlike our old bear cart (item #25B64-01BKS), which has a circular piece of hardware protruding from the top of the lid, the latch mechanism on the top of the new bear cart does not protrude above the lid, but is depressed within.

Q:Has anyone else gotten their finger stuck in the locking mechanism? This just happened to me on my third use of 3rd trash container. I was alone without a cell phone and so literally had to pry my finger out of the mechanism, which was quite uncomfortable

Q:Will this keep out rats? They chewed a hole in my Rubbermaid trash container

      Answer This Question

A:  We've not received consumer feedback of rats chewing through Toter Bear Tough carts, and find no complaints in customer reviews (where you'll find several comments that the containers are effective in keeping out rats, raccoons and squirrels. It's important to make sure the lid is fully closed and latched, so there's no exposed plastic edge to chew.

      by|Feb 23, 2023

A:  Up here in the Poconos, I really don't have a rat problem. Moreso, I've had bears & raccoons get at my trash. However, once I received my Toter Pails, problem was solved. I've actually observed my buddy Max Bear, who would take my cans down the hill into the woods, knock over & jump on the cans to no avail. He couldn't get it open, or break it. I've gotta assume rats wouldn't be able to bite through the Toter.

This is nothing close to bear resistant
My can was destroyed after my first time putting trash in it and it was destroyed by a small brown bear. It is a total waste of money. I strongly suggest trying something else because this product does not work.

Toter bear carts are "bear resistant." They're not bear "proof." We're unaware of any commercial storage cart on the market that is bear "proof," due to the practical needs of consumer ease-of-use and efficacy, as well as bear safety. Our carts have been certified as "bear resistant" by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, which tests grizzlies trying to get into carts and only certifies carts that don't get breached after 60 minutes of bears biting, clawing, pounding, etc. When our carts get penetrated, it's usually due to "luck" and determination by the bear. We encourage people to read numerous reviews on multiple retail sites to get a fuller picture of the customer experience of Toter Bear Tough trash carts before making the decision to purchase one. Racoons and squirrels - Kryptonite for Toter
Can you make one that is squirrel and raccoon proof; they claw/scratch right thru it; top and container. then anyone can get into it. Please sed a replacement; I will have to leave it in the garage 64 gallon dark green with black lid

This is the first time we’ve heard of raccoons and squirrels “clawing” through a Toter Bear Tough cart (please search the reviews for “raccoons” and “squirrels”). Perhaps these have Superman powers, with tiny claws that can “claw/scratch” through a barrier that resists even grizzly bears. Toter Bear Tough carts are certified (cert. #3367) as "bear resistant" by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee's (IGBC) "Bear Resistant Products" program. To earn ICBG certification, a product must withstand 60 minutes of bear contact—biting, clawing, pounding, rolling, compressing, etc.—without being breached. Our Bear Tough carts feature a double-walled, rotationally molded lid and a steel-reinforced (metal shroud around) rim. The lid is fastened to the cart with 1/4-inch steel U-bolt hinges and a locking mechanism. ToterAnswers

Good, but not Bear Proof at all.
This can worked well but a very large, persistant black bear finally got it. He did have a whole day to work on it and he did succeed

This product is Not only for Bears. It keeps the raccoons Out!! I used to have ripped of garbage bags with trails of trash since we luve near a golf course where this is a lot of wildlife. This is not flimsy plastic garbage pal. It is a heavy hard strong lockable trash can that is easy to lock and open when you need to remove the bags. Highly Recommended

I purchased this trash can last year when we moved to the area after having our other trash can emptied by a bear. It has since been attacked multiple times by bears. I have seen them pulling it out from the side of our home, sit on it and slam their paws down on it repeatedly in an attempt to get the trash out. It held up for awhile, but now the metal bar is broken off and the latch will not close. This is an expensive trash can to not hold up.

A bear got into this can pretty easily. He/she pounded on the top lid until a corner popped up. Then pulled the corner up, put his arm into it and took out several garbage bags before I caught him. I've emailed customer support and they have not responded in two weeks.

Bear proof for a year - now just a lunch box
Well, after having my year old bear-proof can compromised three times in as many weeks, I decided to test it myself. It only took a minute to open - just tip it over and let it hit the ground with some force and the lid pops right open. structurally, I've seen 300 pound bears jump on it and drag it into the woods 100 feet from my house, but just tipping it makes it open. I'm going to reach out to the manufacturer now, but doubt there will be any thing they can do. Way too pricey to fail after a year. Try something else...
