Q:Can I use this product to insulate existing walls from the outside of the house?
by|Feb 1, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry and for your interest in the DAP Touch ‘n Foam products. In theory, the project (use case) that you propose is possible, however, both 1K and 2K spray polyurethane products are not rated for UV exposure, accordingly, a weatherproof (water/UV) barrier/coating is critical to the products performance in a sun/weather exposed environment. Once fully cured, the foam would need to be covered/protected with a rigid physical/protective barrier material, such as exterior rated sheathing/siding to prevent exposure. Should you wish to discuss your intended project or have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

          Outside
We skirt applied it to the outside of the house from 1955 and used exterior paint for a test. In the month of October we saved $100 on our power bill. Drafts have decreased as well. Surface and foam temps need to be adhered to. It is closed cell not open cell which is needed for this application.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on the Touch ‘n Foam Pro System 200 Kit. The texture/consistency issues that you describe can result from the product being dispensed out of temperature range and/or in in an "off-ratio" manner (the blend of A and B components out of specification). The application of off-ratio product can lead to poor foam structure (low expansion, weak/brittle, too soft/poor hardness etc.) The most common reasons for this condition are attempting to spray through valves that are not opened equally. As indicating in the product usage instructions: “Fully open valves on both cylinders by turning counter-clockwise until a slight resistance is felt” and/or attempting to apply the chemical through a restricted/partially clogged nozzle: "If spraying has stopped for more than 30 seconds, foam in the nozzle will begin to cure and clog, and system performance will be compromised". To verify that the chemicals are being applied in proper ratio, we recommend a "test application" prior to actual use: Spray a small amount of foam on scrap material to check chemical mix. The foam should be off-white in color and be tack free within 30–60 seconds." Lastly, Troubleshooting: If cured foam appears either lighter or darker in color immediately after spraying, one component may be blocked or empty. Immediately stop spraying and do the following: 1. Check both valves to be sure they are fully open.2. Look for and fix any kinks in the hoses.3. Remove the nozzle, clean off any residual liquid or foam. Check to be sure two roughly equal chemical streams exit the foam applicator barrel by dispensing into a waste receptacle.4. Verify that the chemical, ambient, and substrate temperatures are within the suggested ranges.5. For additional assistance, contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. All of the above-referenced information can be found in the enclosed product usage instructions, as well as website usage videos. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you and to provide you with additional trouble shooting guidance. Didn't work for me
Experienced DIYer. Followed directions exactly. Worked great for about 2 minutes. Sprayed whole ceiling. One of the chemicals clogged the hand sprayer. Ultimately bought the competitor which worked great. Was able to use these canisters by reusing the tubing and handle from the competitor.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with Touch ‘n Foam Pro System 200 Kit. Based on your commentary, it would appear that you may have been attempting to spray through a restricted/partially clogged nozzle/gun. As indicated in the product usage instructions and website usage videos, "If spraying has stopped for more than 30 seconds, foam in the nozzle will begin to cure and clog, and system performance will be compromised". Likewise as indicated under the Troubleshooting section: “If cured foam appears either lighter or darker in color immediately after spraying, one component may be blocked or empty. Immediately stop spraying and do the following: 1. Check both valves to be sure they are fully open. 2. Look for and fix any kinks in the hoses. 3. Remove the nozzle, clean off any residual liquid or foam. Check to be sure two roughly equal chemical streams exit the foam applicator barrel by dispensing into a waste receptacle. 4. Verify that the chemical, ambient, and substrate temperatures are within the suggested ranges. 5. For additional assistance, contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.” Of note, the use of any accessory item (such as chemical lines, application guns, nozzle tips) not specific to this kit can lead to significant performance concerns, as these components are not interchangeable. Should you wish to discuss this with us, please feel free to reach out to DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAPFoam

                  Totally disappointed.
After having the chemicals straight from the store to my 75 degree house for 2 days, I still got less than 100 board feet with less than 1 inch of insulation. It never expanded much. The gun never stopped leaking either. Also, this is a lot messier than the videos!!!

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on the DAP Touch ‘n Foam Pro System 200 Kit. As with all two-components kits, coverage is expressed as a board foot, this is defined as 12” x 12” square by 1” thick. A System 200 Kit is designed to provide 200 board feet (theoretical output) when properly applied. Even small variations in application conditions (chemical temperature, air temperature application surface temperature), application technique and/or the depth/thickness of applied foam can significantly impact the product's coverage rate. Because you did not provide sufficient background details, it is difficult to provide a more detailed response to your claim of insufficient coverage in this format. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you. DAPFoam

                    What a mess!!!
Read instructions - seemed simple - pull the tab it opens both cans and off you go. Instead - the tab was hard to pull, one side broke off, finally opened it up - one rank started to leak immediately into the box, the other didn't even open. I started spraying only the brown goo and ended up ripping the tanks out and manually screwing the nozzles back on.

                      Chemical A ran out.
I really loved this product! I watched the dvd and followed all the instructions. I made sure all the temperatures were within the limits prescribed and everything went well and I was very happy. The reason I am giving this product 4 stars instead of 5 is because chemical A ran out before chemical B did. I bought two of these 600 packs and both of them had this same problem. On both packs I made sure that both valves for the chemicals were open all the way, that the hoses were tight but not too tight so there were no leaks, and made sure that the hoses were never kinked. I believe that if both packs I bought used the chemicals in a better ratio so they run out at the same time I probably could have finished all the outside walls of my basement. Overall I would highly recommend this product. My basement already feels like it is at a more constant temperature, it is sealed up, and looks great.

Thank you for posting your feedback on the DAP Touch 'n Foam Pro System 600 Kit. These kits are filled with sufficient material to dispense a minimum of 600 board feet worth of delivered foam (when properly applied). After achieving a full evacuation of the 600+ board feet of delivered foam, there will always be residual chemical in one or both tanks. This condition is normal and expected. Should you wish to discuss this with us, please feel free to reach out to DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAPFoam

Theory is great, application and quality didnt come through
I needed a little more product for a large product and thought I'd give this brand a try. While applying this stuff is never "easy" and you need to be careful with temperatures and keeping everything flowing and clean, this product struggled from the beginning and turned into a mess for the garbage can. The tanks started off strong for all of a minute or so before the B product (which is a nasty liquid until properly mixed) started leaking from the tank threads and quickly messing up the pressurization. I eventually got the leak under control and blocked with putty but by then the tank had lost the pressure needed to adequately mix. The final product never got the right mix and turned into slimy goo that will not cure. Its going to take hours to clean it out and start over. I think had the tank not been defective (or I'd been able to tell in time to return them and not start it flowing) it would have been effective. It was for about a minute before things went south.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with Touch ‘n Foam Pro System 600 Kit. Based on your commentary regarding the "leaking" that you describe, it is like that the hose line was not properly connected. The most common causes for this condition are cross-threading, not applying sufficient torque to ensure a seal and/or over-torqueing, which can crush the fitting: "Tighten hose fittings with wrench provided. Do not overtighten". The texture/consistency issues that you describe can result from the product was being dispensed in an "off-ratio" manner (the blend of A and B components out of specification. Great when used right
I used to work for a spray foam insulation company and have gone through many froth paks over the years. I no longer work in insulation and needed this to seal my own crawl space. These are very temperature sensitive. I used mine during the spring after leaving these in the sun for most of the day (high was 65 degrees). Pay attention to how the gun is spraying. If you are using the fan tip, if you noticed the spray is splattering and not coming out in a clean line, change the tip. Pay attention to the canisters. Every time you have to move, pick up both canisters. I noticed the red canister was draining faster than the white one, so I closed the canister a full turn. Later, it was still lower so I closed it one more turn. Spray in even lines back and forth as you move your hand up or down. Try to keep the gun at the same distance the entire time. As others have said, it does not last long after it’s been used, so try to burn through the whole kit in the job if possible. If you get some foam in your skin, a little acetone or mineral spirits will clean it off real easy.
