Based on the published dimensions, 5x5 OD and 5/8" wall thickness, the inner dimension should be 3 3/4", large enough to go over a 4x4 wood post (because it is nominally 3 1/2" OD) but alas, not large enough to go over my true 4x4" OD metal posts.
Yes I am about 175 and I would not worry about standing on them.
Although Trex Posts can be used as post sleeves over wooden 4x4 posts or metal inserts, it is not required. Trex Posts are designed to be stand-alone, and do not require any insert. The exception to this is with any post that will support the weight of a gate, in which case a metal post stiffener is required.
My experience has been that the gap allows insertion of the 4x4 which, because of the inherent nonuniformity of posts, allows for easier insertion and lessens the “wiggle room”. Once installed, especially as the post is tied to others or cemented down and then the dirt brought up around, it just hasn’t been an issue.
Yes, we’ve bought for exactly that purpose, which we’ve purchased many of in the past. Wish Home Depot would carry more of these kinds of composite products, they are the perfect choice for outdoor wood substitutes in Florida weather. The ones we installed over 10 yrs. ago look as good as when we first put them in, they are timeless!
Yes, no problem.
It has been a couple of years since we installed it, but my recollection is you put the post in the ground about 12 inches. The fence sections are 8' tall and the post is 9', so if you want the bottom of the fence to be at ground level, you have a foot left on the bottom that goes in the ground. We did not use concrete, we used the foam post set that Home Depot sells and it worked very well.
No, squirrels would be less likely to chew this product as compared to a wooden cap.

Individual post caps are not available on HomeDepot.com, but can be ordered at your local Home Depot store through the Pro Desk. There you will be able to order three different styles of caps: Crown, Pyramid, and Flat.
