Yes, a medium grit sandpaper of about 400 should work fine. Work from the board to the edge. When smooth enough for your needs, then you can prime it and then paint the desired color.

Please send me the MSDS for this product we have the 1-inch thick size. Thank you

primer failed in external application
I used these as end caps to frame balusters for a deck railing. I painted over the factory applied primer with Behr exterior paint that included primer prior to nailing the balusters in place. Completed the work in September. Primer failed over the winter and chipped off leaving bare wood. Will need to scrape and repaint in the spring.

I’ve had great success with this product for various applications. Primarily interior craftsman style window and door trim. Also for custom closet build outs. Occasionally, for exterior fascia and trim, but only if it’s can be painted immediately (the finger joints will come apart if the primer only is left for any amount of time at all). It is more consistent in LxWxH than typical lumber and the pre-primed finish allows for a decent paint finish. It is easy to work with and seems to be dimensionally stable once fastened (I typically apply adhesive and finish nails or crown staples depending on the project). Hope this helps.
