Product Details
Cultivators vs. Tillers
Cultivators are smaller and lightweight, working best in small, established beds. Tillers are powerful and ideal for breaking new ground
Power
Powerful engines help quickly turn soil for easier planting in the spring and turning under vegetation in the fall
Durability
Troy-Bilt has a limited lifetime transmission warranty on the cast iron gear casting and precision cut bronze gears (select models)
Rear Tine vs Front Tine
Rear tines push through challenging soil faster and deeper. Front tines work best in established gardens for prepping and maintenance
Forward Rotating Tines
Forward rotating tines move in the same direction as the wheels and are best used in previously tilled areas.
Counter-Rotating Tines
Counter-rotating tines move in opposite direction of the wheels and are best for breaking new ground and hard, challenging soils
Dual-Direction Tines
Dual direction tines allow you to switch between counter-rotating and forward rotating tines to optimize performance in soil conditions
Bolo Tine Design
3 uniquely shaped tines work together to create finely textured, well-aerated soil (rear tine only)
Maneuverability
Power reverse allows for flexible handling around rocks and other obstacles
Peace of Mind
2-year limited warranty (Transmission warranty may vary by model)
Pride
Built in America with US and Global Parts since 1937 (excludes cultivators)
Balance and Control
Well-balanced, easy to control design allows guidance with JustOne Hand operation on rear tine tillers

The machine itself is the ultimate tiller. On delivery there was some assembly required because it couldn’t be shipped fully assembled. The manual was somewhat confusing and the illustrations could have been better. My Pony model circa 1980 had a much better manual. There was a separate manual for the engine which also could have been better. The engine oil provided was not enough to meet the level specified in the manual. Also, the throttle control on the handle bar was not installed properly at the engine and had to be adjusted correctly so it would work. The machine itself is very well built and had it not been for the minor issues described above, it deserves five stars!

The tiller was leaking gear oil when it arrived. The factory quality control never noticed one of the axle seals hadn't been seated properly. The Troybilt (MTD) representative told me I would have pay for transportation to the nearest authorized repair center. The next problem was the tine drive selector was misadjusted and had to be forced into the "drive" position, followed by the selector knob falling off. The third problem was when one of the rear tine guard shield bolts fell out while tilling. I wouldn't recommend this tiller to anyone. The Troybilt tiller I bought in 1980 was the largest model, it had no flaws, and wasn't built by MTD. Stanley Black & Decker bought MTD in December 2021.

Nightmare
Arrived missing the assembly hardware and manuals. After getting hardware and assembling the tiller - it doesn't engage the wheels. Still in process of getting it working.
