Yes it does. Its aluminum and easy to flatten the end with a hammer.

do I have to heat the pin to secure the handle to the shovel

No, 2 options; you can drill a hole completely through the shovel once you get the shovel as far up on the handle as possible and use a bolt. I recommend a nylock nut and cutting the end if it protrudes too far. Or you can use two 1/2" to 3/4" screws to attach. If you do it this way, drill SMALL pilot holes before trying to screw into the handle. It should be fine for a very long time. Before inserting the handle, inspect for warping and rotate the handle accordingly.

what is the diameter?

Label says 1.5" dia. The diameter at the seat is 1-3/8".

My home garden is made up of mainly silty soils and as such at times when it's dried out it's like digging rock. My shovel handle cracked because of this soil condition. Wile shopping for a new shovel I ran across this handle. It's cheaper than buying a completely new shovel but will require a small amount of work in order to fit it into the blade.

It's a good handle, straight-grain wood, but the shape was off...I needed it bent. I softened the tapered end for 45 min in a jerry-rigged steam-box, carved off some wood, bent it to shape. pegged it, and let it dry/shrink for 48 hours. Then I force-fit the head, drilled the cross-hole, drove the rivet through the handle, and peened it. A good, tight fit. The varnish was rough, took a minute to sand it down a bit. Ended up with a good handle. I've had it for only a week, but I've used it to help spread two yards of gravel, and it's strong, better than the original handle by far.

The handle was excellent, but I had to settle for it as the one I needed, one that fit into a spade with a curved socket (collar), was unavailable.
