A:  I'm guessing 6 inches (it is downstairs and outside). It is made of metal, with a wooden handle.

A:  4.5 inches diameter. Feels like aluminum or steel.

A:  The screw attracts a magnet, so my assumption is that it is powder coated steel. The screw measures 4 3/4" in diameter.

A:  The Corkscrew part of the tool is 4.5“ wide and the 2 1/2 turns Span about 7“ in height. Not sure what type of metal it‘s made of but it does not seem to rust, is easy to clean and sturdy.

This aerator is a must have for any organic gardener. It’s easy to use and makes turning your compost super easy. It’s very well made and sturdy. This would make the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. I also use it to prep my beds in the spring or between plantings. My only concern would be that you could possibly harm earthworms if you are too forced and not careful. I hurt one testing it out, so be mindful of that because earthworms are a gardener’s best friend.

Quite a useful tool for getting to the bottom of your compost bin to shake things up a bit. It's definitely more effective than a pitchfork or hoe, as you can screw it down pretty much to the bottom. I should note though that it's not made of very robust metal. I was trying to more or less bring things up from the bottom of my pile and mix everything up, and the weight of the compost easily bent the handle of this tool. However, for just light aerating, it does the job just fine.

Compost decomposes so much faster when turned and aerated but turning the pile in my barrel is such a pain with the shovel that it does not get done. Now with this tool, I can easily twist down to the bottom of the pile, lift up and go again. It not only aerates but mixes the pile and breaks up any hard crust. I can now do in five minutes what would have taken me 45 before and I get a much better result in the mixing. It would be a little handier if the handle rotated on the shaft, but I guess that is what gardening gloves are for. This tool is well constructed of substantial material and clean easily with a garden hose.

The Tumbleweed Compost Aerator is a tool that certainly has a different look. It is both durable and sturdy and appears to be designed for more heavy duty uses than aerating compost. I was able to aerate my compost bin rather quickly using the tool. I didn’t know what to expect. I spun the Tumbleweed Compost Aerator into the compost until I reached the bottom and then lifted it back out of the brew. It did take more effort than I expected, maybe because the organic matter was so dry or maybe because of the types of material I place in my compost bin. I got some spent cucumber vines tangled on the shaft, a slight bit of annoyance that I am not sure how you would avoid. I would definitely recommend wearing garden gloves when spinning your compost. As to the tool itself, the handle is firmly secured to the shaft. My thoughts are that it would be nice if the handle spun on the shaft much like a wheel on an axle. I’d also add a second spinning handle lower on the shaft. The resulting design would work much like a brace hand drill. To be clear, the tool did do what it was supposed to do and did so rather well as is. There has not been enough time for me to notice the compost developing faster as a result of using the Tumbleweed but I actually do expect that to happen. I can’t wait to use the Tumbleweed Compost Aerator like an auger to extract finished compost through the bottom access panel of my compost bin.

I am actual amazed at how well this worked, a much simpler device then messing around with a pitch fork or hand rake. I got this for use in my worm farm as I always felt like I was going to tear apart the worms and hurt them when using the hand rake. This works so much better, just a few simple turns and the soil gets broken up quite a bit. This is well made and no doubt will out last me. One negative is I wish the handle would spin when I turned it and there was another handle in the middle where I hold it to spin.

                        Expensive for what it is
This aerator is a bit difficult to use. It is awkward because you need to hold the metal below the bend with your second hand, but the metal turns under your hand meaning one cannot get a good grip. I had one in the past that had a rotating wooden handle to hold to guide this process. This one seems quite expensive for what it offers (basically, one piece of bent metal with a top wooden handle). I kept it because the hassle of returning was too much, but I would not buy again. It does the job, just not easily.

Works as advertised. Saves me from having to move the pile in order to turn it. It only takes about 10 minutes to aerate a 3 ft wide by 3 ft deep compost pile. The device is based on the KISS design principle. There are only 2 parts, a handle which is used to hold and rotate a 1 piece solid steel spiral rod.
