Questions & Answers

Is accepted by local codes and can it be installed behind drywall surfaces

Asked by: Dw
• NEC compliant (Article 334-40b, 2005 and 2008) • UL and CSA listed Approved for rework and/or repair situations in existing structures. No junction box required. Concealed applications are acceptable. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't consulted the application NEC section. Also commonly used in modular home construction.

do you have to provide support or a strap near the kit

Asked by: nick
Highly recommended, but I've done it without support. The metal that attaches to the clam shell halves provide plenty of wire support, and the plug itself is clicked shut and won't pull apart without intervention to the clip mechanism.

Is my understanding of the Tyco romex 2 wire splice kit that it will connect three wires ( black, white and bare ground )?

Asked by: Randy
Yes, that is correct. The three wires are inserted into the end of the clam shell an spades are driven into the wire when the shell is pressed closed. This is done on the existing installed end, and the extension end. The two halves then click together just like an automobile type connection, only high-voltage,

I bought this product to get rid of a junction box that would be right in the middle of the backsplash in back of my new cooktop. It wasn't until I drove the 15 miles home and opened it up that I read the VERY TINY, like size 1 font, instructions that say it cannot be used for NM wiring manufactured prior to 1990. That should be on the outside of the package and not hidden on a tiny piece of paper on the inside. See photo.

Not something you would use on a new installation but work well for a renovation of a space and you need to extend a circuit and cannot get to the panel. They are UL approved or I would not use them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product for a very specific purpose This is an excellent product for a VERY specific purpose. This product is for a spice inside a wall. It is illegal to splice a wire inside a wall with wire nuts so you must put them in a exposed box. This NEC approved splice can be hidden behind a wall. (verify this with local building codes that may differ from NEC) This can NOT be reused. So go slow and match the cables correctly before you snap it together. If you can use a junction box and wire nuts you will save a lot of money over this device BUT if you are doing a complicated remodel and cant or wont rip out all the drywall or walls and need to splice a cable inside a wall this is NEC legal way to do it. Yes it is not cheap but for a hidden splice i very highly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from does what it says I damaged a romex cable with a nail gun. I was planning on just fixing it with a junction box, but decided to try this instead after reading about them online. This worked perfectly! And since I had limited cable length to work with this was a better solution than the junction box especially since it didn't need any more cable length to install. I only gave it four stars because it's kind of fussy to work with and DO NOT test fit the plastics parts or wire clamps. The are designed for a permanent fit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be warned! I purchased four of these kits when I remodeled my kitchen. I removed the soffits and had to re-route the wiring - which of course was no longer of sufficient length to get to the outlet. The kits were cumbersome / tricky to use but I got the hang of it, and I was very happy with the result. No tracing wires and very few holes in my kitchen walls. However, about 6 months later one of these kits failed. For some reason, one of the internal connections simply failed and took out the entire circuit. As the kit was behind my newly painted and finished walls, I was not happy about having to punch a hole. Then it dawned on me that I was not 100% sure where the kit was located! I would still recommend this product but I would also in future: 1) make the connection behind a kitchen cabinet or something that can hide the hole you have to punch if one fails. This saves repainting etc. 2) Make detailed plans or take photo's of where the kit is installed. The other three kits are still working fine.
