Q:Can the connector parts be re-used? Wouldn't there be a problem with the gap in the piercing contacts spreading that would create higher resistance if wires had been inserted, removed, and the re-inserted?

Answer This Question

A:  Great question. You might want to reach out to the manufacturer for your local building inspections department. I personally wouldn’t reuse one that I found in the wall but if I wasn’t happy with something while I was actually using it I would have no problem taking the wires out and reusing it on the same job. You would definitely wanna strip fresh wire and I wouldn’t decrease the gauge. Go from (12 to 14ga).

    Q:does it pass code

A:  Hi - It is marked as complying the U.S. National Electrical Code 334.40(B) for years 2005 and 2008.  Each jurisdiction decides when (and if) they will start using the new electrical codes.  Some may still be on 2008.  Many are on 2020.    Back then (2008), this was legal for both repair work and renovations, new construction, etc.   In 2014 and again in 2020, that section was changed to say only for "Repair".   Honestly, it is way better to make a splice in a small metal box using properly tightened wire nuts.  The few times I have had to extend a wire in my home, I added a length of wire, and then put a blank cover on the old box and painted it to match the wall.  It is barely noticeable and 100% legal and 100% safe.  Not buried and findable if there is a problem.  And if you properly ground the metal box, then it will protect against arcing and should pop the breaker.     I did buy one of these, but discovered the VERY fine print inside the package that says it is not rated for wire made before 1990, and of course, my house was made before 1990, so I can't use it...

A:  Yes it meets code for remodel/existing conditions.   It does not meet code for new construction.

A:  These are UL listed for the purpose. As an electrician, I have used these in every romex situation and never had a single problem with inspectors about it.

A:  I reached out Directly to Tyco and was told they will not be manufacturing any of these nor any of the 3 wire splice kits, or 2 wire splice and tap kits.

I bought this product to get rid of a junction box that would be right in the middle of the backsplash in back of my new cooktop. It wasn't until I drove the 15 miles home and opened it up that I read the VERY TINY, like size 1 font, instructions that say it cannot be used for NM wiring manufactured prior to 1990. That should be on the outside of the package and not hidden on a tiny piece of paper on the inside. See photo.

Awesome way to connect Romex in wall, or mid attic, with out useing a jbox, or housing of some kind, I would not hesitate to use it again, and again, and again.

                            Works great
I needed this to splice some old romex wires to new ones inside a home and didn't want to make an ugly junction box stick out of the ceiling. I don't know why the manual states it is not intended to be used with older romex prior to 1990. It seems to work just fine on anything from 70s to modern day. I have tested it on a variety of romex wire I've had laying around from different time periods. The only thing I can think of is that some romex might have a thicker shielding that prevents the clamp from fully fastening the spliced end connector. Overall I would recommend this to anyone needing to splice wires without the need of a junction box.

The instructions are small but important!
Great solution to splice a line during a remodel that ran through a brick wall and make running a new line nearly impossible. The instructions are very small, but important. No need to strip the wires. Make sure they line up as illustrated. Be sure to use pliers to clamp down on the splice after you've put the cover on - keep clamping down with the pliers until you don't hear any more clicks and everything looks tight. It's a last-resort solution, but one that I'm glad exists.

Excellent. Device works well with newer romex, but older generation cable is too thick of sheath material, doesn't often fit.
