Is there a recommended color matched stain to use to touch up cut pieces?

Asked by Bud March 21, 2020
1
Answer

Yes, the touch up stain is base 5077 / 8 oz (CLRNT 384th, BL 13, CL 1, KXL 24.5, LL 26). Please keep in mind this is meant for touch ups only. We recommend testing the stain in an inconspicuous location before applying it to the exposed side of your trim board.

What kind of wood is this? Would it be suitable in using it to make a butcher block countertop?

Asked by diyer March 8, 2020
1
Answer

This trim board is made from Southern Yellow Loblolly Pine. We do not recommend using this trim as a butcher block countertop. The intended use of this board is for accent trim, and the rough texture is not ideal for a countertop surface.

Can the trim boards be cut down to 1in x 2 in x 8ft without sacrificing the finish?

You would have to paint the cut edge. I cut mine around a switch and painted...looks great. I also cut for another section, but that edge was against a wall.

Can trim piece be installed directly on drywall or does it have to be installed over top of the shiplap?

Asked by BC January 1, 2020

Answers

When installing shiplap over plaster or hardboard, the walls need to be in moderately good condition. Construction adhesive is usually the easiest and fastest way to install wood shiplap over drywall, plaster, hardboard and even old shiplap. When applying adhesive, be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions. To make sure you have a tight joint when applying adhesive, use small nails to tack up and hold the shiplap in place on the drywall or plaster while adhesive sets. Apply tack nails every two or three feet.

Just great for creating faux ceiling beams
After looking at the prices for faux ceiling beam (wow, how expensive!) I decided to create my own. Searched and found this, and it's perfect! I selected the light brown, kinda hoping it would be a bit darker than what was pictured here, and bingo! It was delivered in a very few days after ordering. To make the faux beam, I used 3 of these boards plus an unfinished pine board of the same dimensions (5/8" x 3-1/2" x 8') also purchased at Home Depot, and mounted the unfinished board flat to the ceiling. Made the rest of the "box beam" out of three of these barn wood boards and screwed them to the unfinished board on the ceiling, to get the look you can see in the photo. Used dark coarse-threaded drywall screws of various sizes for the entire job. As a plus, we can hang pretty much anything on this, as it's real wood, and not styrofoam or some composite stuff. And it was easy to touch up the boards with Old English scratch cover. Very happy with this. Thanks!!!

The finished product looks great, but this wood has issues. Only one side is painted fully, so using the other side was not easy. The other edge is painted with what looks like one coat, so using both edges is difficult. Some boards were badly warped (this has nothing to do with shipping, shipping does not warp boards. Not using a kiln to dry the wood does), causing me to have to cut them down to cut out the bad parts, increasing waste. Buy extra and you should have a nice looking final result.

Please be aware these are not all exactly the same width. They are rustic and somewhat uneven. The overall project came out beautiful, but there were some frustrations. I advise you use the piece you are actually going to nail up to measure and it should go smoothly.

Poor Quality
It was nice to have pre- stained wood, but that’s where the joy ends. All of our wood was warped, some very warped. Also, the wood was all different lengths, so we had to do a lot of trimming.

I got this to finish the trim around the edges after installing the shiplap. While there were variations on blemishes on the shiplap, some of the trim pieces were sized approximately 1/4"-3/8" different, so butting the trim together took some planning and extra work fitting.

Got the lumber boxed and bundled in good shape, some twisting which is to be expected but no cupping or other defects, also purchased a charcoal stain to touch up the splintering from cuts. Might put a coat of satin poly on down the road to protect the rustic grain from abuse as it is being used for trim in my entry ways. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice rustic look without the pain of painting/staining without putting a hole in the wallet.
