What is the sound transmission class (STC) of a standard stud wall make with this?
        ByFeb 19, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

David- There are many factors that contribute to STC rating including stud type (wood/steel) depth, gauge, spacing, insulation, resilient channel, fastener spacing, and workmanship. You could expect an STC of 34-37 when using 2x4 wood studs spaced 16" or 24" OC without insulation and a layer of 5/8" Sheetrock on either side. Wood stud 24" OC with 3" mineral wool batt insulation and 1 layer of 5/8" Sheetrock on either side could achieve a 46 STC. The STC of a 3-5/8", 25-gauge steel studs spaced 24" OC with 1 layer of 5/8" Sheetrock on either side would be 40. By adding 3" of mineral wool batt insulation the STC could be 49. USG does not test the 1/2" Ultralight or Ultralight Mold Tough for STC rating, so if you are using these panels, we would anticipate the STC numbers provided would be lower.

I live in MN and vapor barrier is required per code. With this Green sheetrock, would I still need the vapor barrier before installing on the shower wall? I will be gluing the shower panel wall system, not tiling. Thanks.

            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

DIYwannaBe- Please consult with the Authority Having Jurisdiction to confirm acceptability of gypsum board for your application. In many codes, gypsum board (compliant with ASTM C1396) is not prohibited from being used behind shower surrounds. However, there remains the risk of water or moisture getting through panel joints of the surround or where valves and shower heads penetrate the surround. For this reason, more resilient panels, such as Durock or Fiberock are recommended for these applications.

I need to want to drywall my tub walls only and I have a surround that will reach the ceiling along with a vent to outside. Can I use regular drywall for that application?

                Answer This Question

degenr81- Ultimately, the local code will dictate what products can and can't be used for a given application. We would recommend that you consult the local Building Official or Authority Having Jurisdiction to confirm suitability of gypsum board. In many codes, gypsum board (compliant with ASTM C1396) is not prohibited from being used behind shower surrounds. However, there remains the risk of water or moisture getting through panel joints of the surround or where valves and shower heads penetrate the surround. For this reason, more resilient panels, such as fiber-reinforced gypsum panels (ASTM C1278 ; e.g. Fiberock), cementitious backer units (ASTM C1325 ; e.g. Durock Cementer Board) are recommended for these applications.

It's drywall. It works best while dry. It works easily enough and the weight is decent. Hard to come up with something creative to say. What I cannot comment on is how well it does resisting mold. My project has not been subject to conditions where I can test and compare against standard drywall.

The drywall came damaged. Talked to the delivery driver he told the store manager before he left it was damaged and then she told him to bring it anyways. So I sent it back and had to spend my Saturday going to the store and picking it up myself. Very poor customer focus.

Almost 10 sheets were broken out of 50 I order. I wish Home Depot would rerun me for the 10 sheets that were damaged which I didn’t used and had to throw them away.

Easy to handle for DIY. But the green color is not a great choice when doing priming (needs second coat) to look at it’s best.

DELIVERY OF BROKEN SHEET ROCK CONTINUES TO COST ME DAMAGES
The sheetrock delivered on the morning of 1/27/24 was discovered to be broken and unsalvageable upon removing the plastic wrap. That has proven to be only one (and the least of) the issues I currently have against Home Depot. So far, this whole mess has cost me an entire day of work at this particular job in time, wages, costs, and other pecuniary and nonpecuniary expemses. It should be noted that my account with Home Depot is a “pro account.” I had to pay my laboror for the day, even though we did not possess the adequate materials for the day’s work. As of the time that I am writing this, at 9:25 AM on January 28 (the day following the botched delivery), the situation has still not been rectified and has only been exacerbated by Home Depot and the company’s lack of support and Rube Goldberg-inspired order / delivery procedures. Thus far, this debacle has easily cost me over $1,500.00. At one point during just one of my three separate (and very lengthy) calls with representatives from Home Depot (which also costed me a significant amount of money by virtue of the time spent on the phone NECESSARY to deal with this situation, see more below, as I would have otherwise been working, and earning money), I was informed that Home Depot uses a third-party contractor for its deliveries. Somehow, this led to an internally blunder not allowing me to place a new order for sheet rock until my return was completed, which included the pick up of the damaged sheet rock, which still has not occurred. I was I need at every turn when I tried to place a new order for delivery (I currently do not have a truck to pick up the sheet rock myself). My laboror is at the job (77th Rd) again, today, as I was led to believe that the sheet rock would be picked up last night, and that a new delivery would have been received by this time. However, the situation remains stagnant and unacceptable. Home Depot is literally costing me money by the minute. I have to pay my laboror whrrher or not the adequate materials have been provided as promised by home depot. Additionally, the sheet rock delivery on the morning of 1/27 was also entirely unacceptable because it was left strewn across the sidewalk in front of the house, in violation of New York City laws and DSNY rules and regulations. I received several complaints from neighbors. More likely than not, this situation will require litigation to make me whole and merely restore me to the economic statis quo prior to yesterday. This is based, among other things, on my reasonable reliance with Home Depot, with which I have been in privity of contract.
