I used 23 for my bathroom about the same size. Maybe it was because I kept cutting outlet and vent holes wrong. Maybe my helper was OCD.

Can I use this to build my shower walls?

Asked by: forgar
WRT the comment about using the Schluter shower system: Drywall is what you use with Schluter (not cement board). I have done it. It works brilliantly. But when I last used Schluter (perhaps 4 years ago now), they expressly discouraged green-board (waterproof drywall) and said to use conventional drywall boards. I suspect this is because you thinset the waterproof membrane to the drywall, and the waterproof board is going to be much less happy about absorbing the moisture and thinset when it's applied... I'm betting they feel that the thinset makes a better bond to the conventional drywall than greenboard. I also suspect that they would not recommend it for their system if they hadn't tested it and convinced themselves. I'd obviously read and check the recommendations (in case they have changed) and follow whatever the mfg. tells you to do.

USG Sheetrock Brand 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. UltraLight Panels Mold Tough is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 674.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used it for a bathroom ceiling and where the drywall met 7/16" cement backer board Used this for a bathroom remodel for the ceiling and the bathroom walls where the drywall meets the backer board at the bathtub/shower area. I found the 1/2" still required a couple of people to hang on the ceiling (seemed to be heavier than regular 8x4 1/2" drywall too) and like other reviewers have observed, it is less durable/more brittle. For the extra price, it shouldn't be as fragile. I had missed a small cut off nail that was probably sticking out of the ceiling truss by about 1/8"-3/16" and this was enough to create a 2" or so blister bulge on the drywall when I screwed it into the ceiling, so I had some extra topping and feathering to do to hide the blister. I had no problems cutting it with a craft knife or an oscillating saw for the electrical outlets and light fittings. The other issue I found with this is that the taping and topping compounds tend to be white or cream while this board is a light shade of green, so you will need to use a drywall primer on it to get everything back to a single consistent color before you put the top coat of paint on the walls if you plan a smooth painted drywall finish.

The standard tub is 5 ft, which requires two 5 ft lenghts of greenboard. One 10 ft length would suffice for the back wall of 90% of all bathrooms. The 8ft length is also useful on the sides of the tub, unless you want to do the wall behind the counter in which case the 10ft length is again preferred. Why can't I get the 10 ft length when most bathrooms are better served with 10ft. Money over service! This is why all isles are crowded with displays, the checkout lines are long, and the store is just not fun too be in. Why sell what is usefull when we can force customers to buy more less useful junk they have to through out.

I'm replacing a few panels in a room so it needs to match the existing 1/2". This stuff is about 3/8" thick, maybe 7/16". My existing is 1/2". I rented a truck and already took delivery. Uggg. What a freaking hassle! Why can't they just say what it is, like they do on plywood! Since mismatched thickness is a deal breaker, it has 1 stars! I'm wasting $50 on truck rentals ($25 each way, including the $5 gas). I should have verified it in the store - it seemed a bit light.

We can't attest to the mold resistance portion but this drywall is the worst quality wise! We've worked with other drywall without issue but this stuff crumbled apart. Any other drywall has been scored and snapped without issue but this would either snap with chunks hanging out or half the sheet would cave in and be unusable. We only bought this because it was going to be in a basement that had a moisture issue at one point but we wouldn't but it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Regret Buying I recently used this product for my 600sq ft basement renovation. This is the 3rd basement reno Ive done. I originally was looking for the XP drywall but accepted this as a substitute since they could not locate 10ft lengths of XP. I ended up using 8' and 10' lengths of mold tough. First off, it is lightweight and I don't think that is a good thing. Upon using my first board I noticed how brittle it was. Any type of pressure on the board and it will break or collapse. If you press on the drywall in between the stud bay the drywall will actually flex inward (never seen that before!). The drywall itself is filled with air bubbles and often times I would find large voids that would break or collapse during install. Any type of pressure on the board from an uneven stud would cause it to crack. Ive never had these problems in the past with drywall. Also I noticed that the paper face on many of the boards is wavy. I ended up needing more drywall to finish my basement and was able to locate non lightweight drywall from a supplier. I regret using the light weight at all and wish I could just tear it out, but the cost is not feasible at this point.
