About This Product

USG Sheetrock Brand Easy Sand 20 Joint Compound is a lightweight, setting-type compound with a 20-minute working time. USG setting-type joint compounds provide faster finishing of drywall interiors, even under slow drying conditions. Rapid chemical hardening and low shrinkage permit same-day finishing and usually next-day decoration. USG Sheetrock Brand Easy Sand 20 Joint Compound features an exceptional bond; virtually unaffected by humidity extremes. It is ideal for laminating double-layer systems, particularly fire-rated assemblies, and for adhering gypsum panels to above-grade concrete surfaces. May also be used for surface texturing and for filling, smoothing and finishing interior above-grade concrete. Note: Setting-type joint compounds should not be used for skim coating due to dryout concerns.

Highlights

  • Weigh up to 25% less than conventional weight setting-type joint compounds
  • Sands easily; similar to a ready-mixed, all-purpose joint compound
  • Unique humidity resistance
  • Check-crack resistance in heavy fills
  • For interior gypsum panels and exterior gypsum ceiling boards
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified for low-emitting performance
  • Return Policy

Questions & Answers

Can durabond 90 be used to plaster over cement board.
ByAug 15, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Bill- No, joint compound should not be used to "plaster" directly over cement board. Cement board is a substrate for tile. For Dry Untiled Areas—For small areas where the USG Durock® cement board will not be tiled, such as a board extending beyond the tiled area and abutting another surface, treat joints as follows. Seal USG Durock® cement board with Type 1 ceramic tile adhesive. (Mix four parts adhesive with one part water.) Embed USG Sheetrock® Brand joint tape over joints and treat fasteners with USG Sheetrock® Brand Durabond® setting-type joint compound (45 or 90) applied in conventional manner. Flat trowel USG Sheetrock® Brand setting-type joint compound over board to cover fasteners and fill voids to a smooth surface. Finish joints with at least two coats USG Sheetrock® Brand ready-mixed joint compound. Do not apply ready-mixed or setting-type joint compound over unsealed board

Why does my mud turn hard in 5 minutes? I’m using number 20 but it starts turning hard in in the tray
      ByJul 30, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Tomas Thank you for your inquiry. Easy Sand Setting type joint compound has a shelf life of up to 12 months under good storage conditions. There is a production date stamped on the bag. Be sure the compound you are using is within date. If the bag has gotten damp there could be small bits of hardened compound which act as an accelerator. Similarly, if there is hardened joint compound on your tools or bucket that will also accelerate the set time. Make sure you are thoroughly cleaning your bucket and tools each time you mix a batch. The mixing ratio for Easy Sand setting type joint compound is approximately 1 cup of clean drinkable water for every 3 cups of powder. Make sure you are using clean drinkable water at room temperature. Be sure when you are mixing the compound you are pouring the compound into the water. You do not want to pour water on the to compound.

how much more mud is used for heavy knock down finish
        ByJun 24, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Thank you for your inquiry. USG does not have coverage estimates for using joint compound for texturing, as it can vary depending on how thick it is applied. USG does not recommend using joint compounds for spray applied textures. We offer Tuf-Tex or Sheetrock Wall and Ceiling Spray Texture for knock down finishes.

Can I use this as a skim coat for walls?
                ByMar 24, 2026
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Joseph A true skim coat is a very thin application over the entire surface of the wall or ceilings. Easy Sand Joint compound cannot be applied at less than 1/8" over the entire surface of the board. It is not recommended for skim coating.

                  Poor delivery service
Delivery was awful. Home Depot wrapped the small bag to a large wooden pallet and left it on the my doorstep. Looks like the delivery guys just wrapped the bag to a pallet and decided to give it to me a a gift so they would not have to contend with its disposal. I also have no means to dispose of the pallet.Took me 20 mins on the phone to request that they refund the order and pick up the pallet, and only two minutes to place the order. I will unfortunately not be ordering from Home Depot again because of this. I also have to wait up to 48 hours for them to pick up the pallet.

My Go‑To Compound for Everything Now
Struggled for years with premixed mud — constant shrinkage, slow dry times, and fighting the consistency every single time. Switching to EasySand 90 completely changed that. Learn to slake it properly and mix only what you can use within the working time and it becomes incredibly predictable and versatile. I use it for everything now: taping, fill coats, skimming, patching — it handles all of it without drama. It sets hard, sands clean, and never gives me the headaches premix used to. I honestly won’t go back to premixed again. This has become my everyday compound. Repairs adhere and stay solid. Patches don’t flash, crack, or separate later the way premix sometimes does on questionable surfaces. Hope this helps

Easy Sand 20 has many uses. Using it as a fast-setting drywall compound is a no-brainer. We use it as an incredibly strong adhesive bond securing styrofoam polymer concrete crown molding to ceiling and walls. The short dry time is perfect and only requires 2 or less screws to keep 8' moldings in place while Easy Sand 20 does its work. Once secure, the only way to remove it is to destroy it. A perfect product!
