Product Details

USG Sheetrock Brand Durabond 90 Joint Compound is a setting-type compound that provides faster finishing of drywall interiors, even under slow drying conditions. Rapid chemical hardening and low shrinkage permit same-day finishing and usually next-day decoration. It features exceptional bond, virtually unaffected by humidity extremes, and is are ideal for laminating double-layer systems, particularly fire-rated assemblies, and for adhering gypsum panels to above-grade concrete surfaces. May also be used for surface texturing and for filling, smoothing and finishing interior above-grade concrete. Note: Setting-type joint compounds should not be used for skim coating due to dryout concerns.
  • Provides hard, plaster-like finish
  • Quick setting; low shrinkage
  • Unusual check-crack resistance in heavy fills

Q:Can this be used directly over old (1920's) buffalo/Beaver board? If so, does the old plaster board need to be sealed?

1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your question. Without knowing exactly what the substrate is USG would recommend doing a test patch/mockup to make sure you are getting proper bond and the finish result. Thank you for choosing USG.

          The BEST adhesion for taping.
Note the way the different compounds held the paper tape in the test pictured. Some peeled away clean in spots (not good) and others held so well that the tape actually delaminated (perfect adhesion). DuraBond was the only USG mud tested to show absolutely perfect adhesion. ProForm Quick Set and QS Light are the two others with perfect adhesion. See my ProForm Black All Purpose review to see that picture. Black AP, by contrast, did not do well BTW.

Durabond is great for a 1st coat on drywall to set tape, corner bead, and hide screws. Once it sets it's hard to sand therefore don't use more than you need. 2nd coat use Easy Sand 90 to feather out with and sand as needed prior to paint.

This is a great product. Been using it for many years. Good for two or three coat applications in a single day. Doesn’t shrink. Difficult to sand so not for finish coat. Great for deep repairs.

This is what they call hard set. Once cured it is extremely hard. You can’t really scratch it, and sanding is very tough. It’s for your first coat. Put on thin. Coat over with easy sand. This will help prevent cracking.
