Q:For ceiling application with standard 24 OC joists, do I need to be concerned about sagging? the 5/8" is heavier than 1/2" lighweight, of course. do you recommend additional bracing or is it not necessary? thanks.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hugh Thank you for your inquiry. Sheetrock 5/8" Mold Tough Firecode X can be used on ceilings. If the long edge of the board is parallel to the framing the maximum joist spacing is 16" o.c. If the long edge of the board is perpendicular to the framing the maximum joist spacing is 24" o.c. Hope this helps.

Q:Is this good to use to help drown out sounds from outside? Will be laying over existing wall. Or is another recommended? Thanks

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your inquiry. Adding a layer of Sheetrock will add mass to the existing wall. Mass may be a factor in the reduction of impact sound transmission. It is most effective—though unpredictable—in the lower frequencies. Hope this helps.

It's always safe to go with a better product than to use cheaper matterials for the job. We used this product to replace a water damaged ceiling that had mold.

Easy to cut and hang, great for a bathroom
Hung 5 sheets of this in a bathroom remodel and found it easy to work with. I did notice that even with a sharp craft knife blade, the backing on the underside of the sheet rock can ball up and start to tear the backing paper when you're scoring the backside fold of a cut. Rather than dragging the blade tip up the fold, I found that I had to bury the blade into the backing paper and then draw it up for a clean cut. The board itself is heavy and I found that safely navigating a full 8x4 sheet around the house to avoid damaging corners was a 2 person job (as was loading the cart in Home Depot as the sheets were on the second tier of a storage rack). In all honesty I ended up with 5/8" by accident as these sheets were in the bay where I'd bought three sheets of 1/2" the week before to do the ceiling and there was no rack label, but I didn't realize this until I'd hung a couple of pieces. So I had to make a trip back to HD to take back the unused 5/8 sheets and get the correct 1/2" size I needed for the walls where the drywall butts up to the 7/16" cement board I had used. The "Muppet of the month" award goes to the HD associate who managed to mix & match the drywall stacks and the sheet size labels so double check the dimensions that are printed on the board ends just to be sure that you're buying the size you think you are. It hung easily and I found that even screws that were quite close (within 1/2") of the edge of the board didn't break the board edge if they were driven in with care. The edges are recessed which makes taping the seams a little easier as the topping coat has a natural edge to be feathered to.
