What to use to remove the tarm and the adhesive from the asphalt singles?

Would you advise to use more adhesive then just around the edges? Threw the center of tarp? Or even put some more around edges so wind doesn't get under it? If you use a "second" glue, what would you recommend?
ByApr 28, 2024

Answer This Question

The product description states that the tarp is self-adhesive. While it doesn't mention adding additional adhesive, some users have found the included adhesive insufficient. If you're concerned about wind getting under the tarp, reinforcing the existing adhesive or adding more around the edges, and potentially in the center, might be a good idea. Consider a strong, weatherproof adhesive tape designed for outdoor use, such as Snow and Ice Duct Tape or Flex Tape, if you choose to use a second adhesive. These tapes are designed to adhere in cold weather conditions and bond to various materials, including tarps.

I have an "Ondura" roof which is asphalt yet corrugated. Will your product adhere to this roof as well? Also, I see that your tarp is a mere 5 mil thickness. That's actually rather thin. Won't this wear out rather quickly?
ByMay 26, 2023
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

This tarp is designed to adhere to a variety of roofing materials, including asphalt shingles. While Ondura is a corrugated asphalt roofing material, the manufacturer's information doesn't specifically mention Ondura. It's always best to test the adhesion in an inconspicuous area first. Regarding the thickness, the product description lists the thickness as 5 mil. A 5 mil tarp is considered lightweight and may not be as durable as thicker tarps, especially with prolonged exposure to the elements. The product description does mention UV resistance, which helps protect against sun damage. However, the lifespan of the tarp will depend on various factors, including weather conditions and usage.

CHECK YOUR TARP BEFORE APPLYING! !! We purchased the 20 x25 tarp for temporary protection on a leaking roof before a rainstorm. Unfortunately it did not work to keep the leak out. After the storm we went to inspect & see if maybe our placement on the roof was wrong & we found that one of the woven strands in the tarping material was just not there, creating an opening 1/4 to 1/2 of the way down the tarp, at about 3 feet in from the side. So disappointing. We purchased tarp tape & covered the separated seam but so far haven't had any rain to test it. Pretty much a waste of out time & money as a waterproof fix. The adhesive is incredibly sticky, but once water gets in, it will lift off.

The "self-adhering" aspect of this tarp is the factor that is supposed to separate this tarp from a traditional tarp. Unfortunately the adhesive strip was in no way adhesive. Not only did it not adhere to the roof, it didn't even adhere to my finger. Over-rated, much too expensive tarp that does not even measure a full 10'x12'.

It's just a tarp
As shown in my photos (taken from my first story roof), it comes very compact, and is easy to open by one person, but, two people is probably easier and safer. It spread easily and stayed down (no breeze during my installation). It has double-stick tape which has a protective strip over it. Rather than remove all the strips (one along each edge), I removed a small part of one strip (see photo), and attempted to stick it to my asphalt shingle. It would not adhere to the shingle for even a second. I attached it to my bare skin, but, it stayed on for only about three seconds. I even attached it to the tarp (i.e., bending it over onto itself), but, it held only for a couple of seconds. Worse, the tape came off the tarp, itself, which, had I removed all the strips, would have been very difficult to clean up, and, probably, would have blown away in even a light wind! Considering the cost of $63 - - triple the price of similar sized, non-adhesive, tarps available through many vendors and stores, both online and brick-and-mortar - - you'd think the UTARPit manufacturer could have come up with a better system. The grommets seem sturdy, but I did not have a need for them, so, I did not test their sturdiness (many tarps that I've used in the past had grommets that separated or tore fairly easily; this one's grommets seem sturdier, but not much better). The tarp can be used for a variety of purposes, other than roofing, such as a floor protector for painting, covering a firewood stack, wintering a picnic table or even an outdoor shed, etc., though its huge size may make it unwieldy or cumbersome for smaller purposes. It would also make a good cover for a flower bed or other gardening purpose, though it would have to be covered to hide the blue color! (some time ago, I used a tarp to cover the bare ground, then put pebbles over it to turn it into a rock garden, with the tarp acting as a weed barrier). All-in-all, if you ignore the adhesion claim, it is a fairly sturdy tarp, but, it is nothing special, and, definitely, way too expensive, especially where there are less expensive alternatives easily available.

Works fine
We actually used this tarp to cover a cord wood chicken coop we were building. It worked quite well until our high winds took it off somewhat. It stuck to the sides of the coop, which is made of concrete and cut cord wood slices, so that we could drape it over the whole coop. Even though the wind took it off on one side, it didn't rip or tear - a plus. We'd use this kind of tarp again if needed.

Good Idea, Poorly Made
I really wanted to give this product only 1 star, but I have to admit that the concept is still pretty cool. I bought it a month ago and immediately noticed how thin it is. When I put it on the roof some of the "basket weaving" was already separated and you could see holes in it. Low and behold, a month later with a few days of rain, it didn't hold up. I'm doing what another reviewer did and going to a heavier tarp and nailing it down. Wish this company made a heavier tarp.

    Easy to use
This is a great product for a quick fix. The adhesive runs along the perimeter & is pretty thick. I was weary of how well it would hold but it has worked for days now. As another reviewer mentioned, it would be nice if the adhesive strips ran across the middle of the tarp as well. The tarp itself is middle of the of road, not very thick but not very thin either. It is good enough to last for a few days until permanent repairs can be made to the roof. I think this is a really good product to be used for emergencies.

This tarp is sturdy and waterproof, what else would you ask for from a tarp?

    Great protection.
I would recommend this product for any household use. This tarp can be used on different surfaces. The self adhesive tape is very strong and holds well. Easy to install with just one person. No nails or hammers needed, which make the job easy. I used this tarp to cover my wood pile outside, the tarp is very strong and can hold up to the weather. I have also used this tarp to cover the slide out on my camp trailer, it keeps water from running inside my trailer. The metal corner holes are strong enough for tie downs. This tarp has such a wide variety of uses.
