Questions & Answers

Can you use this as wall paneling for a dining room/kitchen? Can it be painted?

Asked by: Cg
Look online for DIY instructions on how to create a beautiful shiplap fact using this underlayment on the walls. The recommendation is to paint the wall the same color. And to use nickels as spacers. The store should help you with the cutting which will make this job much easier and faster. Cut into 12 “ widths. It would make for a very current decorating affect in a dining room. But I wouldn’t want to use it on every wall. Shiplap can be over done.

Can I use this underpayment to lay tile on?
Asked by: Rooky
I searched the internet wondering the same thing. I found a YouTube video by a master installer that shows that yes, you CAN use it as underlayment for tile. You DO however have to properly prep the plywood before use though. Basically, you'll be making a sort of "poor man's" backer board that will work just well and is much cheaper than the actual thing.

I had it cut to 12" wide and just tall enough (79 1/2") to fit in the track of the door. It flexes enough to get it in and out easily and I just store it inside behind the curtain when not in use.I cut a door opening in the bottom about 8" x 8", leaving a 1" strip at the bottom for stability and attached a little curtain of fabric (gathered at the top and cut vertical strips to help block the air but allow the cats to get in and out easily.) Note: this is the sliding glass door between my living room and screened in porch which has a n outer door that is closed at night, so other critters do not have access when I'm using it at night for my cats. They do sell these made out of aluminum and glass that actually get mounted into place and lock, but they are over $100 and for more permanent use. Mine cost $17.10!

Bought this product due to price and availability to complete a faux shiplap project on a wall in our home. The boards are very light and easy to work with which was a major advantage for my wife and I. Boards were secured to the wall with 1.25" brad nails across the studs and everything went great until it was time to paint. The website and also the associate at the store assured us that these panels could be primed and painted with out issue. We bought the Kilz water based all in one primer that was suggested and after putting the first coat on, we found that the primer was actually separating the layers of some of the boards. There are roughly 40 boards on the wall and only 4 of them did this but it caused a lot more work, which eventually led to just completely replacing those sections with a different piece. Not sure why only a few of them separated like that, but I would advise painting before installing if possible just to make sure you won't have this issue.

After reading all the positive reviews of people who have painted this and used it for indoor projects, I had home depot cut 3 panels and was planning on using them for board and batten. Luckily I did not adhere the cut panels to the wall before I primed them because immediately after applying the primer the entire surface of the board was covered in bubbles where the veneer had raised up. Very disappointed!
