You got two options. Cut both ends giving you the 45” or just cut the 3” from the bottom. You will still have the edgie style on the top and will still fit. I cut one of mines to Make it fit, cut it with a grinder. Very easy. I would cut only one side. Less work and still looks good. I hope this helps.
5 and one quarter (5 1/4 inches) to 5 and one half (5 1/2 inches) varies. But looking at the window guard as a whole you can't tell that the size varies, they look about the same. Why the variation in spacing? Well probably just a lack of precision in manufacturing.

These are permanent. Would have to use lot of manpower to knock out. More than likely an object like a chair would be needed.
