Asked by Lindy December 13, 2020

VELUX Sun Tunnels are ideally designed for small spaces, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and hallways. However, this product will function similarly to a recessed electric light, so we would not expect it to interfere with your TV.

As a contractor I installed some of these and found cracks in flashing at attachment points a few months later. I was able to use roof tar to seal. I am still hoping it doesn’t come back to bite me later. Would not use these again.

Can the rigid tunnel be installed at slightly angle rather than vertically straight up to the roo...

Asked by Ky September 5, 2019

The short answer is YES! VELUX Sun Tunnels with rigid tubing will have an upper and lower elbow that will help you adjust to the roof and ceiling angles. The upper elbow actually attaches to a pivoting ring within the flashing that will give you more of a straight run than you think is possible.

Can this product be used on a flat tar

Asked by Bob June 25, 2019

Regarding the tube skylight, almost anything manufactured can be altered or adapted to fit a slightly different purpose than the original design of its use. However, keep in mind that whenever you adapt something, you increase the risk of problems. In this case, it also could void the manufacturer's warranty. This product is made to be installed on a sloped roof, so in my opinion, as a roofer of over 30 years, I would recommend that a box be built over the opening on the flat roof that would be flashed and sealed. This box would be flush with the roof but have a slope at the top of it so that the tube skylight could be installed on a slope and then flashed and sealed properly. To attempt to install the tube directly over the flat roof, I believe would be a mistake, unless the manufacturer makes an adapter kit for that very purpose. So, the flat roof would have a circle cut in it the diameter of the skylight tube and the top of this angled box would have a circle cut into it the diameter of the tube skylight. Then, the top edges would extend a few inches beyond that circle in each direction to allow room for flashing to be installed and sealed with roof cement. Be absolutely sure that the bottom of the box, that portion that is in contact with a flat roof, is also properly fastened, has appropriate flashing and roof cement.

I had to install this closer then 24 inches from the roof ridge will this be a propblem

Hi JJ. Choose the TMR 014 Sun Tunnel for this purpose as it has a pitched aluminum base/flashing. Here is the link to that item: Please contact VELUX Customer Service via email to receive instructions for installation procedures for this type of roofing material. Send this request to:

I specified a solar tube style skylight to be added to my main bathroom which has no natural light (no window) and was always dark until a light was turned on. This 10" Velux is amazingly bright on sunny days and does well on overcast days. This photo is from an overcast day and still lights the room. It also does not collect moisture when showering but I do have an exhaust fan with light but the mirror will fog even with the fan on.

Rechargeable batteries not Impressive
We had two rigid Velux sun tunnels installed in February. The interior work took a couple more months and the batteries were installed in one sun tunnel in May and the second sun tunnel in late October. The sun tunnels provided great light during the evening but the batteries in both sun tunnels failed by mid November. Very unsatisfied with this. The ceiling is 14’ high and having to change out with new batteries so soon is not what we expected.

14 tunnels in! And a question...
Ok, I have gone sun tunnel crazy! Have an unusually large single floor house and have put in 14 sun tunnels with 6 or 7 to go. Am in love with the light! One thing is driving me is extremely difficult to get the clear ceiling covers off before install, then back n after install. I see that there a seal and it seems to make the covers impossible to get on. Any tips or tricks? I'm killing my grip and am on high ladders for some (not great footing). When unboxing I've figured out that I need to break the seal all around by gently pulling cover away from ring before trying to remove. Any tips to help would be appreciated...have so many to get up and on. Once this is done I'll be good to go and an extremely happy customer!

Sun Tunnel Skylight are Great
We had Three 10 inch VELUX Sun Tunnel Skylight installed on Monday 10/19/20, one in the kitchen, two in the living room. They have truly added light to the rooms which was a great improvement for the area.

Love the light
My hallway is like a cave, buried in the center of the house. My friend has a similar floor plan but has two solar tubes they are so effective I constantly was trying to turn off the lights when I exited the hall. Now I have the same experience but have learned not to try to turn off the lights when exiting. Now after 12 years of having a cave I have bright light in it. Also got the solar powered LED night light feature. Previously when having company had to suggest the leave lights on so they could see at night, now the hall looks like moon light. Very pleased.

Happy to have more natural light.
We had three sun tunnels installed by a five star installer. Cost of the project was just shy of $5000. Wish I would have investigated a bit more before proceeding. The trim rings allow you to see the four mounting screws. Called customer service and they said someting about white tape to cover the screws. The highest unit is about 15 feet in the air and has about 9 dead bugs in it. Thought these would have been sealed better. I have not removed them yet because now I need to buy a 12 foot step ladder to service this unit. We had a electric light install in another and it is a florescent buld with an odd base connector. The contractor removed an existing can light and tossed the fixture into the attic while using it as a junction box. Not sure I would call that upto code or expected of a five star installer. The trim rings are also difficult to remove as there is not much to grip onto to rotate the ring off.

Wonderful Passive Light Source
TSR 10” Sun Tunnel installed 2 years ago. Amazing. Always think lights switch left on. BUT time to get dead bugs out. Got Trim Ring off. No clue of how to get diffuser removed. Ideas?

Add the Solar night lite.
Lots of light. Have one in my hallway and one in my dining room, where I have limited light. Also added the solar night which adds another dimension.
