Questions & Answers

can a manual rod be used in case of failure of remote?

can a manual rod be used in case of failure of remote?
Asked by: lp
No, that will not work.

I had a velux solar powered skylight installed today, but as of yet can't get the remote to pair with the skylight.

Do I have to wait for the solar panel to charge in order to power the window, if so how long does that take? There is no mention of this anywhere in the manual, or in the advertising materials.
Asked by: Vesol
There is a very small Off/On switch at the bottom inside of the skylight that needs to be turned on before you start the registration/activation of the remote. The same thing happened to me.

Can the Solar-powered “Fresh Air” Skylight be installed on concrete roof?
Asked by: Bobby
Yes, you will need to use the EDW High Profile Flashing Kit, which is used for concrete tile. I hope this is helpful to you. Thank you for choosing VELUX!

can this skylight be installed on flat roof?

and what is the difference between deck mount and curb mount?
Asked by: Constantine
No, the VSS Deck Mount Skylight cannot be installed on a flat roof deck. The minimum pitch requirement is 14 degrees (3/12) pitch. You have the option of installing the VCS 4646 Curb Mount Skylight. Our Curb Mount Skylights can be installed on a flat roof application. Simply build your own curb, using a 2x4 or 2x6, and install our unit over it like a lid over a shoe box. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for choosing VELUX!

21 in. x 45-3/4 in. Solar Powered Fresh Air Venting Deck-Mount Skylight with Laminated Low-E3 Glass is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 132.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best thing about my home! I inherited 3 velux electric sky lights when I purchased my home 6 years ago. These sky lights were installed in 1990 when my home was built and they still work perfectly with no leaks. They have withstood the harsh Utah climate for 29 years and still operate like they are brand new. I will happily replace them with another Velux sky light with a smile on my face when they decide the time is right. Thank you giving us this amazing product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy a ladder if you get the solar model **This is a review of the control system** We completed a high end new house build in April 2017 and installed 4 of these solar powered skylights. Our window dealer pushed these solar versions over the wired versions. The wireless controllers are able to connect and open the skylights to vent. From DAY ONE, at least 6 times out of 10, the skylights cannot be closed! The wireless Velux control pad reports "no contact" with the skylight and I have to pull out the ladder, climb up, remove the screen, and manually toggle the power switch in the skylight to re-establish connection. We very much enjoy the open skylights but mostly leave them closed now to avoid the lost connection project. I am writing this now after changing the batteries in the controller, which triggered 2 skylights to open but "lost connection" to close. It is raining in December with another ladder project required. The automatic rain sensor is not closing these for me either. SO, if you have the option to install a wire, GO WITH HARD WIRED NOT WIRELESS over the objections of any salesman. It is too late for us. I was told by our AV guy that these use a ZigBee wireless communications protocol. So many devices in houses now use this protocol that signal traffic can get confused. I have no solution now except a ladder and not liking these. I wish I had ignored that salesman. The physical aspects of the skylights are excellent otherwise.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked well for almost a year Liked it when it worked, and everyone loved the touchpad remote, but another contractor who does new building (I stick with remodels) said he wouldn't go near the solar-powered ones, especially if they do not have a replaceable battery. I laughed and bought one anyway, even though previously had only used hard-wired ones. Well, out of nowhere every two days the remote loses contact with the skylight and I have to climb my 10-foot stepladder and turn off the power and then turn it back on and reregister the unit. Seems odd that it is two days, but it has been doing that for about three weeks now. Already tried new batteries in the remote. Sure wish I had hardwired it. I have two others hardwired that work beautifully and I never worry about the solar battery going dead. Oh well, live and learn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement to a fixed skylight This replaces a fixed skylight in a bathroom that had no other means of providing ventilation. Looking forward to improved humidity and temperature control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My wife loves it!! I wanted to install a replacement skylight on my home with power type unit so my wife could open an close it easier ,at the time the only one that was available was a hard wired system and that would make it to difficult to do myself . Velux was the answer ,the new solar powered skylight was my answer to my dilemma, I could install it myself without hard wiring it . I ordered it along with the Velux flashing kit through Home Depot online and received it in about a week right to my door . I went online and did my home work and watched the videos that Velux offered . It took me about 8 hrs to install the unit but that's because I had never installed one before , it went smoothly ,the flashing kit made it a breeze . Well we had a hard rain storm 3 days later and it works great with the automatic rain sensor , it closed the window and not a drop of rain got on our kitchen floor. We could never leave our old skylight open if there was even a chance of rain. My wife loves it , she loves the wireless remote (no more cranking) just push a button and it goes up or down . On those hot days when we get home we push a button and within an hr the house cools down 5-10 deg and saves on air conditioning. I would highly recommend these solar units, I'm sure it will pay for itself in the long run just in the savings on AC usage

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our home is transformed we have a medium-sized single-level home in between two 30foot high homes. Our only sunlight came in to the front of the house in the afternoon, on sunny days. The rest of the house stayed dark, especially on cloudy days. Last month we had 5 (yes, 5) Velux solar powered fresh air skylights installed in the darkest parts of the house, each one in a different room. What an incredible difference!! Diffused light pours in from dawn to twilight, totally changing the feel of our home. My husband had been a skeptic but he loves having them now. He loves the air flow, the light, and the fact that they did not leak when we had a freak rainstorm right after they were installed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A 5-Star excellent review from a 40 year contractor/professional remodeler! Very well constructed sky light. Solid construction. Nothing is flimsy or cheap - all is high quality materials and fabrication. The product comes in a very durable cardboard box and the interior packaging is top quality which protects the skylight during shipment and loading it up on the roof for installation. Once installed it works flawlessly! The ease of the solar powered wireless remote control operation is amazing. It took no time syncing the remote to the unit. I must say the read out on the remote screen is state of the art. It looks expensive and quality when it mounts on the wall. The magnet securing the actual remote to the wall mounted cradle is clever. Best of all just today July 16, 2015 I did a walk through with the home owners (my clients) and both the husband and wife can not say enough of how pleased they are with the product or installation. As a contractor doing residential remodels for close to 40 years I absolutely would recommend this product. Only con is that I would suggest not to try this yourself. This is not a DIY project as there is too much involved with getting the opening and framing correct.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Worth The Money I live in a house that has a large living area with high ceilings. When the summer sun heats the room it is almost unbearable. I've tried tinging the windows, installing exterior blinds, and getting a high performance ceiling fan. The room still was getting above 80 degrees. I replaced the existing skylight with a solar powered skylight. I got the interior blind as an add on feature. What a difference! The room is much more tolerable now than it was previously. The second thing that I really appreciate about the skylight is that I can open it in the evenings to exhaust much of the hot air. The third thing that makes this skylight such a wonderful upgrade is that I can leave the skylight open all night and still be safe in my home. Before installing the "fresh air" skylight I had to shut the windows at night to feel safe. Now I can leave the skylight open and continue to cool the house while I sleep. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny. The installer raved about the quality as well. I highly recommend it.
