Q:Our FCM 2246 inner dimension after installation is 21 1/4" wide and 45 1/4" tall. Will the tray fit?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi ML. The FCM Accessory tray (model ZZZ 199 2246) is designed for the FCM 2246 skylight. The FCM 2246 Accessory Tray requires a minimum opening of 21-1/8" X 45-1/8". As long as your FCM finished opening is slightly larger than 21-1/8" X 45-1/8", the ZZZ 199 2246 Accessory Tray should fit.

Q:Dimension of unit and if unit comes in four pieces or is it pre assemble.

      Answer This Question

A:  If you have built the curb for the skylight to the dimensions specified by Velux for the skylight, which I think is about 49 1/2" x 25 1/2" for the 2246 skylight, then the assembled frame will fit precisely over the outer edge of the skylight curb. It comes complete with the pick and click tabs.

A:  First, you should see a link towards the bottom of the web page that says "downloadable PDFs." This should get you what you need in regards to installation. Second, your question requires a two-fold answer. If you order a FCM skylight with a blind "factory-installed," then the accessory tray comes pre-assembled with the blind installed. If you order the accessory tray by itself, then you will have to put it together. It does come as 4 pieces and the pick-and-click brackets are pre-installed. The accessory tray is designed to sit down on the curb and "hang" inside the opening. It becomes like a skylight frame. The accessory tray, therefore, requires a certain inside dimension for it to fit down into. We would be glad to supply you with our accessory tray minimum dimensions chart if you call us at 800-888-3589. We can also answer any other questions you may have.

Easy to assemble and install frame for Velux blinds
We installed three Velux 2246 fixed curb mount skylights during a re-roofing project a while ago. Now the summer has come, we decided to fit the Velux blackout blinds to see if we can cool the room a little more. As part of buying the blackout blinds, Velux recommends these accessory trays (better described as blind frames) are also bought and I have to say that, having done this project, you probably couldn't install a Velux black out blind without one. The frame kit is very easy to assemble and install. It is basically a plastic frame that drops into the existing curb mount skylight hole to which the blind attaches. Assembling the frame is very easy and takes about 5 mins with the aid of a power screwdriver. To install the frame, you head up on the roof and unscrew the skylight glass from the curb. This has about 10 Philips screws and takes a couple of minutes with a power screwdriver. You then take the included foam self adhesive seal/gasket and apply it to the top of the curb mount, trimming off the excess using a pair of scissors or a sharp craft knife. Once the foam gasket is in place, you drop the assembled accessory tray/frame onto the top of the gasket, line it up and re-install the skylight glass. The only thing you have to remember when installing the accessory tray/frame is which end of the frame you want the blinds to be located at as only one end of the frame has the locating clips for the blind. We have two skylights side by side so I had to remember to make sure both frames had the blind location lugs at the same end of the skylight. Once the accessory tray/frame is in place, installing the blind is simple and takes about 15 minutes. We installed two of these and it took me about an hour to figure out what to do (the instructions are pictorial, not written), remove the skylights, apply the seals, line up the frame and re-attach the skylight. One note is that we made the skylight curb from 2 x 8 lumber to the size recommended by Velux. The assembled size of the accessory tray/frame is slightly smaller than the finished size of the curb and you will have a 3/8" to 1/2" gap to fill (with a filler strip or similar that this kit doesn't include) to fill the gap between the interior of the wooden curb and this plastic blind frame. The acessory tray frame includes a pre-fitted white rubber gasket to ensure that this gap can be filled with a snug fit to whatever filler material is used. The only cons in the whole process was that the frame itself was dusty from the plastic dust that had been created when the frame was cut at the factory and its pretty expensive for what is basically a simple white plastic frame. I would also recommend wiping clean the interior of the skylight glass before it is refitted as the plastic tray/frame will make it impossible to clean to the very edges of the skylight glass on the inside.

Tray is needed for the blinds- directions suck though- but after an hour figured it out and then it was a snap. It is definitely easier to install blinds and tray at same time when replacing the skylight

          Poor Retrofit Design
I found myself having to replace my existing Velux skylights after 20 years which is to be expected. What I did not expect is for a company that is so well known for a quality product, they don't seem to put much emphasis on customer satisfaction. All skylights eventually need to be replaced, so as a consumer, I would like to be able to purchase a direct replacement from the same company. Unfortunately the replacement skylights have different dimensions and operators. Now I have extra trim work to install and since the skylight operator was changed from an open hook to a closed loop I now need to buy a new pole. I think next time they need replacement I am just going to remove them completely.

Thank you for taking the time to review our product. We are sorry to hear that the skylight replacement process was not as expected. Over the last 20 years, VELUX has made slight changes to our product design to increase energy efficiency, daylight glass area, and longevity. As a result, the current model skylights are 1/8-1/4 of inch different in width and height. Although you may have to do a touch of interior work, you will not need to change your existing rough opening to accommodate the new skylight. In most cases, your older out-of-reach control rod will work on the newer skylight operator hook/loop. Prior to making this control rod purchase, please give this a try. VELUX strives to provide you with the best product support before and after your purchase. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly by phone 1-800-888-3589 or email: vcustomer.service@velux.com for assistance with these concerns.

            skylights are amazing
I love my 5 velux skylights I have installed in my home. I have had them for about 12 years with very little issues. One issue I have run into with 2 of the 5 is the crank seems to be stripped, not allowing to operate the window. This has been a problem for a few years, something I should have looked into under warranty. I have looked for solutions online and have not been able to find a good response to my dilemma. Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated!

                Battery Dead
We have been happy with the skylights and the solar blinds. But we were surprised that the battery in one of our solar rechargeable blind is dead after 6 years. These do not get used a ton as it is in a second home. Is this normal life? And wow the replacement is expensive and hard to find. Battery model 833442

Windows 5 stars, Blinds 3 stars
I have had 3 FS skylights with solar blinds installed in my new house in 2013. Windows are doing great but one of the solar blinds broke after 4 years. The battery charges just find but the blind does not respond to remote and can't be reset. Considering steep price of Velux product, I would expect higher reliability rates for powered blinds. 2 out of 3 seems very low.,

I didn't realize this had to be installed from outside of the skylight, meaning the window of the skylight had to be removed. I thought it was something we could install ourselves, but we ended up having to hire someone.

Yes, the Accessory Tray must be dropped into the curb from the roof deck, and if your FCM Skylight is already installed, it must be removed for that process. We regret that you were not aware. Thank you for choosing VELUX!
