Q:Do these break from hail storms?

        Answer This Question

A:  If you are in a hail prone area, you may want to choose the same sun tunnel but with the Impact Rated dome that is polycarbonate as found here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/202844249

        by|Jul 6, 2023

A:  These bubbles are very sturdy, and ours hasn't. I don't know if they would withstand golf ball sized hail though.

No light coming through. Huge regret
Even on bright sunny days, can't detect any light coming through, even with 3 of them in the kitchen. Unless you can install these perfectly straight, with tunnel length under 5 feet, don't bother. We were left with 3 ugly holes in ceiling with plastic covers.

            Dear Valued Customer,

Based on your photo, your tubing currently has slack near both the upper and lower connection points. This is lowering the rate of reflection and decreasing your overall light output. Once this has been adjusted, your light output should greatly increase.

It also appears you may have two flexible tunnel sections attached together for an extended run, which VELUX does not recommend. If your run exceeds 8ft, you may consider installing a rigid tubing in place of the flexible tubing. By changing to rigid tubing, you can increase your light output by two to three times your current light output.

If you would like to discuss your current installation, please contact us directly at 1-800-888-3589.

              Ugly and cheap looking
Be aware this is a PLASTIC light that looks like a cheap, cheap fluorescent light. The light is cold and harsh - like a dystopian science lab. It has a blue hue and removes every hint of warmth from the room. It is NOTHING like natural sunlight from a skylight. It is so hideous that I’m sick to my stomach. I simply cannot keep this horrible thing in my house.

We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your VELUX Sun Tunnel. Sun Tunnels with the rigid tubing were shipped with a blue protective film not long ago. We recommend that you or your installer check inside the tunnel to be sure that the protective film is removed. If this has been removed, consider adding the Neutral Light diffuser to give the reflected light a more natural light appearance.

I would recommend this but it does come with a few challenges, the snap ring is difficult to get seated and then it needs tape over it to hold it away from casting a shadow into the tube and upon the ceiling lens. The lens came damaged in the box, like it was dropped or previously opened. HD replaced it without questions, but that was another trip of 45 miles and my time. I attribute that to poor packaging of the parts.

                Nice for windowless bathroom
I recently had my roof replaced. I had two of these sun tunnels installed at the same time. The roofers installed the dome on the roof and connected the flexible tube. I just had to cut the hole through the drywall in the ceiling and install the fixture. Worked great for me. My portion of the work only took about 15-20 minutes per sun tunnel and was very easy to do by myself. I had them installed to let some light in my two upstairs bathrooms which have no windows and are very dark. Now you don't have to turn any lights on during the day. Attached are pictures. There are no lights on. All light is from the sun tunnels. These were a great investment!

                Best decision EVER.
Bought this for a tiny cabin we are remodeling. We took out a broken turbine fan that had a wonky light in it, and added this. It's all sealed up now and SO BRIGHT (yae for no spiders and natural light!). The tube could be cut down to size easily and since we didn't have attic space it needed to travel through, it made installation a breeze. The outside looks great too. We've made lots of changes to the cabin, and this is so far our favorite!

Flexible units do not perform well
The 14” unit does not work well. It transfers far less light into the room. We have 2 other locations with 10” rigid tube units and they produce more light. When I called Velux to complain they said yep it transfers 1/3 less light. It is way worse than that. No help at all. I said a disclaimer about the flex wall being less effective would have been nice. Converted to rigid st my expense.

We are sorry the flexible tube did not meet your expectations compared to the rigid. We strive to offer options for different types of applications. The flexible tube was designed to help maneuver around obstacles that may be difficult with the rigid tunnel. I have passed along your feedback to our account manager about the need for a disclaimer.
