Questions & Answers

Is this an edible variety (Fiddleheads)

Is this an edible variety (Fiddleheads)
Asked by: Anthony
No, it's not. They call it TN Ostrich Fern which is misleading. The bontanical name for this species is Athyrium Pycnocarpon, while the edible variety is called Matteuccia Struthiopteris.

How tall does this get in partial shade?
Asked by: PURRPURR
Mine are in full shade and they are about 18" tall. I live in South East Texas and I can not put them in the sun -- too hot during summer. But in full shade and with regular water they have survived. During August and September -- our hottest months at 100 plus temperatures -- they get some burn at the tips of the fronds but once the temperature starts to cool off in October they bounce back and start growing new fronds. They have not died back this year because we have had a mild winter.

Not just any fern will survive here. I wanted to try these when I came across them growing in a public garden park in South West Louisiana. I am fascinated by ferns and when I did a search for glade ferns, Home Depot came up with these. I have two huge bushes -- at least 15 - 20 feet tall, so I cut all the lower branches off the trunk about 2-1/2 feet above the ground then created a flower bed under these bushes. I planted these ferns and they, surprisingly, have survived in the shade of the bushes. I planted them last Spring 2018 and it is now Winter 2019 and they are still there. They have not died down for the winter and as we are having a mild winter I think they may not die back at all this year. They went from a dormant root to a thriving bushy plant about 18" tall. I plan on getting more of them.
