Great stain for creating the aged look on cedar beams. This stain also looked great for staining drawer boxes in a cabinet made with Wilsonart's Asian Night laminate! Best application method used, was a sponge brush. I will definitely be purchasing more!
A great stain for creating the aged look on....

This is beautiful as my only treatment to bare solid red oak shelves. Brings out the grain with a medium-darkness tone (a bit darker than the picture). Took some effort to penetrate into rough grain features. I shopped around to avoid nasty chemical products - this VOC is only 40g/L. I covered 96sf with 3/4 of one quart for one coat and never applied a second -- anyone want my second quart? Clean up is easy. Biggest issue is drying: I had outside in the Spring sun for 2 days, then had to bring in for rain. 2 weeks later indoors, the smell is still detectable. Although a water-based product, the smell reminds me of vegetable oil -- not unpleasant.

I have used Varathane Golden Oak stain before, but on this occasion, the stain did NOT dry and remained tacky/sticky for 4 days. I was told that the humidity was too high, but I applied this stain during the fall with cool temperatures and low humidity. I also used Behr (Golden Oak stain, but darker) on the same project and it dried w/in 1-2 hours. Home Depot refunded my money.

That is not what we like to hear! Keep in mind that our Varathane Classic Water-Based Wood Stains will not dry on top of the wood; the excess wood stain must be wiped after a few minutes to remove it from the surface and ensure proper drying. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Thank you for reaching out, David! Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Water-Based Wood Stain is semi-transparent, the final color will be dependent on the condition and type of wood used. With any project, a test application is recommended to ensure a favorable color.

NOT DARK AT ALL! Coffee would stain the wood darker, I should have used that. Opened the can, and it had stuff floating at the top. Contacted Rust-O-Lium and they suggested returning the item.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Classic Water Based Wood Stain. Keep in mind that there are several factors that can impact the color of wood stain, such as the species of wood, and how long the stain is allowed to penetrate the wood prior to wiping the excess stain. The longer the stain is allowed to remain on the wood prior to wiping, the darker the color will become.

The color pictured on the can. Is not the same as the color that's in the can. It looks just like antique white. I'm very disappointed.

Was not happy. I’m t says water based but it is sticky and tacky like oil. I feel like I wasted so much money becaeue I had to buy a two pack. It didn’t not work with other water based products and I had to resand the table again. So frustrated.

That doesn't sound right, Jaime! If the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Wood Stain isn't drying properly, you can try wiping the surface with lukewarm water to help remove any excess stain that is preventing the finish from drying properly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
