Q:Can this be used on outdoor stained deck?

Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help, Anabell. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish provides a protective floor coating, it can not be applied outdoors. The UV exposure will cause the clear to yellow and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I’ve sanded red oak floors down to a bare, light blond ish color. I’d like to keep the wood as close to the bare color it is now. Is this the right product to use to keep the current look/color? And what finish, matte?

    Answer This Question

A:  Great question! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane will offer a crystal clear finish that will not alter the color of the wood when applied as directed. The sheen choice is up to you and the final look you want to achieve. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Planning on taking the carpet off. I needed something to protect our feet from plywood/subfloor splinters until we can get a LVP flooring. Maybe months. Carpet got bunch of holes. Option- keep tripping or take carpet out. Would that work with subfloor?

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane can be applied to wood subflooring. Make sure anything loose removed from the surface and that any adhesive from the carpet is removed as well. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:SDS says 270, thanks. How can it be “no odor”? Is something inaccurate or are the VOCs odorless? Thanks.

        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! The VOC level of a product will not always indicate the odor level of a product. Please also keep in mind that odor sensitivity can vary from person to person. Since this is a water-based product, Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane will have a lower odor than an oil-based finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

          Terrible durability and adhesion
I have used this for hardwood floors and some furniture such as chairs and desks. Huge regret. In all cases, the finish has scratched extremely easily, and even after a year of "curing", the finish can in many places be peeled off simply with masking tape. All the wood surfaces were sanded well cleaned tack cloth before applying. Can was stirred well & used indoors where the temperature and humidity is favorable. 6 coats still thinner than one oil coat. I will always used oil based from now on.

              Horrible
They looked great at first. I used 4 coats of this product and after a few months the coating wore off and my floors looked permanently dirty. They were so bad that I had to re sand and poly the whole floor 5 months later with something else. Very unhappy.

                Like,but,use with caution...
Very happy with it,just have to be very careful with any area rugs you have, they must be put down with non slip Grippies! I fell down in my own kitchen the other day,my rugs had no non slip Grippies on and on one coat of sealer the rug went flying and so did I!

Definitely has an odor, but it wasn’t as stinky as I thought. I followed the package instructions but let the floors cure for a week longer before using the rooms again. So far this stuff seems very durable. Did not have to sand between coats because I applied each coat after the 2 hour dry time. My opinion is that this is a good alternative to Bona if you don’t wanna spend 3x the $$ on poly!

                Dries super fast, one downside...
Perfect solution for DIYers.....dries in less than an hour, coats well with minimum streaking, and awesome coverage (3 coats of 600 sft). So, what's the only downside? It makes the floor very slippery. Very. I decided to refinish the stairs at the same time. They became so slippery it was plain dangerous to walk. My old Lab slid down on 13 steps down- I though that was s gonna be the end of him. Solution - had to get a Rastoleum antislip additive and add two coats of each step. That has improved the grip significantly, but not perfectly. The main floor remained slippery, so I guess we gonna have to get used to it. Overall, we are happy with the product, it gives a beautiful sheen, not too glossy, and it's worth the money.
