Can this be applied on top of primer?

I applied my on top of paint. I used two coats of primer, two coats of paint and three coat of the polyurethane on my kitchen table. I would test on something first. I would not stop at the primer. It is a different consistency than paint.

Depends. It is a water base and as such without a sealer the wood fibers can lift and make a less than desirable finish. Most woods need a treatment of sorts before water based finish is applied only oil base will not lift wood fibers. Learned this the hard way. Even products that claim to be a primer with paint will leave a less than smooth finish. Of course the finer the sand paper i.e. 400 or 600 grit will have smaller pores and produce a smoother finish, but will not take to staining as well as a more porous surface. So if using water base stain then light sanding with very fine grit before an application of polyurethane or oil rubbed finish is applied will give a mirror like surface, but I digress.
