Q:I'm trying to decide to use oil based or water based product. Is one more durable than the other? What are the differences?
by|Feb 26, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to clear things up, Pete. While our Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based and Oil-Based Polyurethanes provide the same performance, the oil-based finish dries with an amber hue while the water-based dries to a crystal clear finish. The water-based also has a lower odor easier to clean application process. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Can I use painters tape after 3 days of drying? I’m using oil based polyurethane.
    by|Feb 10, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. Once Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane has fully cured for at least 7 days painter's tape can be applied over the surface. We recommend first testing to ensure the finish has fully cured to make sure not to lift the finish. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I am building a drying rack for clothes. Will this product work when damp clothes will be hung on it to dry.

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Don. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane provides a protective top coat for wooden surfaces, we do not recommend applying to a drying rack. The high exposure to moisture will cause the finish to blister and peel over time. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I have wood sills in an enclosed sunroom that get a lot of sun and also used for potted flowers, etc., so occasionally the sills also get water splash droplets on them. Prior clear finish shows watermarks so will oil base poly not fade or show dripmarks?

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane provides a protective top coat for wooden surfaces, it is not intended for outdoor surfaces. High UV exposure can cause the finish to fade over time. Instead, we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane as it is formulated for outdoor surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Exterior-Spar-Urethane-9341H/100141869 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I use this urethane as a final coat over water based fluorescent pain on 1 oz lead jig lures. I takes nicks on rocks during vertical jigging and the water based paint never chips. I used up a small can this year over a 9 year period and bought the same product. Meets my needs and we catch some fish :-)

Would have prefered the water-based option I have used in the past but not available when I purchsed this product… three coats over furniture semi-gloss paint should help protect flat shelf/cabinet top surfaces for a while...

          Did What I Needed
This was my first time using poly. I used it for my stair project. I applied with a cheap foam brush. Let it dry for about 6-12 hours. Took 220 grit sandpaper back and forth and reapplied. I did 3 coats on all steps. I’m giving 4 stars because I used up my first can and bought a second can of the same finish, clear satin. The second can came out semi gloss. The cans were from different batch numbers. Returned it. Buy from the same batch is my advice!

            Next level floors and stairs
I’m a diy homeowner. I opted to refinish my entire house including stairs. The most difficult part was the sanding and clean up between 40 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit. 120 grit. Once stained I could already see how beautiful the floors would be. Once I applied the clear gloss it was next level gorgeous! The oil based finish has a strong odor but it’s thick, self leveling, and dries pretty quickly. Open lots of windows. I’m an early bird up at 4am. So by 12 noon I was already into 2nd coat drying. I’m so glad I did this myself. So pleased.

“Satin” finish is glossy even with stirring.
I have used enough poly over the years to know about stirring. Now with 2 coats of satin on the table, it’s glossy. Can’t trust it for another coat so will have to buy a different brand or try for a rubbed finish. It should have been an easy and rewarding project!

This is not what we expect to hear! If the coating had a consistent glossy finish throughout the whole application, we do want to gather more details to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us. When calling, please have your can of Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane nearby, so we can collect the batch information from it.

                Goop
I used for sea shells not wood. Shells are porous so I suspected it would make a good clear coat. Shells are actually kind of gross & I like to make things with them. The goop did what I wanted it too.

Use this on some wood projects and it makes a really nice, shiny coating for the wood whether stained or natural.
