Q:I was told at Home Depot all your polyurethanes were ok to use on floors I asked if there was a difference in the floor finisher and the ultimate polyurethane paint person said all ok. Not ok how long will this polyurethane last on my floors ?

A: Depends on traffic and environment. High traffic high temperature variations 60-80 degrees it'll last for 3-5 years before cracking. Light traffic low temperature variations 68-72 it should last for 10-15 years.

A: Let's clear things up, Elaine. While our Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane provides excellent protection to wooden surfaces it is not intended for floor surfaces. The heavy foot traffic will cause the polyurethane to crack and peel over time. A: It's all about the desired sheen! For example, a semi-gloss finish on the Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Interior Polyurethane, will be slightly duller than the gloss finish. Would have prefered the water-based option I have used in the past but not available when I purchsed this product… three coats over furniture semi-gloss paint should help protect flat shelf/cabinet top surfaces for a while...

Did What I Needed

This was my first time using poly. I used it for my stair project. I applied with a cheap foam brush. Let it dry for about 6-12 hours. Took 220 grit sandpaper back and forth and reapplied. I did 3 coats on all steps. I’m giving 4 stars because I used up my first can and bought a second can of the same finish, clear satin. The second can came out semi gloss. The cans were from different batch numbers. Returned it. Buy from the same batch is my advice!

Next level floors and stairs

I’m a diy homeowner. I opted to refinish my entire house including stairs. The most difficult part was the sanding and clean up between 40 grit, 60 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit. 120 grit. Once stained I could already see how beautiful the floors would be. Once I applied the clear gloss it was next level gorgeous! The oil based finish has a strong odor but it’s thick, self leveling, and dries pretty quickly. Open lots of windows. I’m an early bird up at 4am. So by 12 noon I was already into 2nd coat drying. I’m so glad I did this myself. So pleased.

“Satin” finish is glossy even with stirring.

I have used enough poly over the years to know about stirring. Now with 2 coats of satin on the table, it’s glossy. Can’t trust it for another coat so will have to buy a different brand or try for a rubbed finish. It should have been an easy and rewarding project!

I used for sea shells not wood. Shells are porous so I suspected it would make a good clear coat. Shells are actually kind of gross & I like to make things with them. The goop did what I wanted it too.
