I saw the 1-2 hour dry 'to the touch' time, but what is the working time?

Asked by Jose August 18, 2020
1
Answer

Thank you for reaching out, Jose! The working time if Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane will vary depending on how thick the coating is applied and your weather conditions. We recommend applying in lower humidity and applying near the lower end of the temperature range will give you more time to work. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

how do you apply this product and how many coats should you put on?

Asked by Keith July 23, 2020

Answer

Hi Keith, we recommend applying our Varathane Ultimate Oil-Based Polyurethane with a good quality, natural bristle brush, or lamb's wool applicator pad. A minimum of 3 coats is recommended for proper durability and scratch resistance. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

DO NOT use this finish!
Like many of the other reviews, I had very bad results with this product. I've been using minwax poly for 2 decades without a problem. This product applies very different, the results are hit and miss, and sometimes the outcome is catastrophic. Attention Rustoleum - please don't respond with the instructions about the optimal temp and humidity for this product because I obeyed them. Look at the picture on this review and explain to me why your product dries like that sometimes. It's happened three different times in three different places on this project. When applied, the product leveled OK (albeit thick and difficult to spread) , but as it dried it would dry leaving craters and ripples like you see in the pic. And yes, I stirred it adequately. There's no contamination on the surface of this table - it was sanded down to bare wood. I've had to scrape off your crummy finish once but like a fool bought it again thinking the first can I had was aged. Nope, the new can acted just like the old one. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY THIS PRODUCT. I will buy minwax from somewhere else. Shame on home depot for carrying this garbage.

I have a lot of experience with using Polyurethane and needed to finish some oak shelving that I made. (as an aside, once I used a water based poly and would never do that again) I bought the Varathane oil satin at Home Depot since they no longer carry Minwax poly. Of course this is all about money and obviously Varathane gave Home Depot a better deal. Fine with me up until I used this product. It is more like a gel than a liquid and required extra effort to spread. It went on with difficulty and did not dry fast as advertised. I returned it and went to the local hardware store to buy Minwax oil satin. There was no need to remove the coat of Varathane, Just let it dry, light sand and go over it with the Minwax product. I can't imagine that anyone with experience with Minwax would ever use the Varathane product.

Thank you for your feedback! For the best results, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane with a good-quality natural bristle brush. You also want to be usre you are applying only when air (ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13- 32°C) and relative humidity is below 85% in an area with proper ventilation. This will help with drying and curing of the coating.

Garbage
Ruined about $2,000 of black walnut. Dries white and is absolutely trash. Will never use their products again. Customer service is a joke

Something is amiss here, John! For the best results, Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane needs to be applied to a clean, dry surface. We also recommend applying only when air
(ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. If needing further assistance with the product, please give us a call at 800-901-0411.

This product is a poor substitute for the Minwax products.
I purchased the Minwax equivalent to this product found at Home Depot. Apparently, I purchased a few of the last Minwax cans at Home Depot, when I returned I was unable to find any Minwax products. I tried out the Varathane stain and Ulitmate Polyurethane products from Home Depot, big mistake. When I use the current cans I have I will not be back for Varathane products. Their products are thicker (even when stirred) and have much longer dry times and with their Ultimate Polyurethane (oil based) is thicker and leaves streaks. Not happy.

Very disappointed with this product
Such a disappointment using this product. Left brush marks, very difficult to apply, very long dry time, and lots of wasted time. I thoroughly the product before applying like recommended, used a quality brush, and still there were terrible brush marks. I sanded in between coats and really took my time to try to correct the uneven finish. I gave up and went with Minwax. Much better.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportJun 26, 2020
That's not what we like to hear, Christopher! To ensure the best finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane, we recommend lightly sanding between coats if a coat has dried for more than 12 hours.

Nice brush left large brush marks, even after sanding and then using the spray.
I have an indoor shop, with the absolute best conditions for applying any varnish. This product is really hard to apply because it just sticks and you can barely brush it out directly after applying, which leaves a lot of brush texture! I went back to get the spray product of the same type, sanded the table, then sprayed on two more light coats. The brush strokes are were so apparent that even after sanding, and two spray coats the table still has a really deep brush stroke marks. **Unfortunately I can't recommend this product. It needs to be less tacky/sticky when applying.

Very disatisfied
I agree with the One star reviewer I have been working with wood, stain and varnish/clear coats for 30+ years now. I'm not a Pro but enough knowledge to be dangerous. So here my review of the product. 1) The can say SATIN but outcome is SEMI-GLOSS hands down 2) It takes a long time to dry ( Yes maybe dry to the touch 2 hrs but no good when you need to sand it down for the second coat, the products gums out on the sand paper) 3) Very hard to work it. Used my preferred brush, even tried foam roller and foam; same result hard to spread. 4) Definitely not self leveling. However Home Depot would not allow me to return it just offered me an exchange. So I got their water Based Poly and I got much better result. Still I missed MINWAX product.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportJun 25, 2020
Thank you for sharing your experience using our Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane, Jack. In some cases, the flattening agents in the can may settle to the bottom over time, and thorough mixing is necessary prior to applying to ensure the proper satin sheen. Drying depends largely on the thickness that the polyurethane is applied, and the temperature and humidity; dry to the touch is not always going to mean dry enough to sand to a dry powder. This polyurethane should be applied using a good quality, natural bristle brush or lamb's wool applicator pad; foam brushes and rollers are not recommended. We stand behind our products with a satisfaction guarantee, and if you would like to give us a call at 800-901-0411, we will be happy to help make things right. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
Garbage
This product is a gel not a liquid. It doesnt self level and leaves streaks all over my project. I will never use this product again. Sanded it down and went to another home improvement store and bought minwax. Worked flawlessly. Best place for this stuff is in the garbage.

Response from Rust-OleumSupportJun 22, 2020
We appreciate your feedback, Caleb! Prior to each use, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is stirred thoroughly before each use and often during your application. Please keep in mind, you will also want to apply with a good-quality natural bristle brush to ensure the best finish.

Very good stuff I think but they ran out in the store and I checked more than once. For some reason it took longer to get it bi mail this time than it did one other time I ordered it.

Don't bother
I put a couple of coats on a table top I refinished. Now whenever I place something on the tabletop, even a file folder, it leaves a scratch.
by Pete
Response from Rust-OleumSupportMay 18, 2020
Thank you for reaching out, Pete! To ensure full durability with Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane, a minimum of 2 coats are needed. Each quart has a recommended coverage of 75-150 square feet with a single coat, and it is essential that enough product is applied per coat.
