Is this a good option for an acrylic painted sign i made? It will be outside inthe Oregon weather.

Susanmc - In general, water based urethanes do not yellow as much with age, as do traditional oil-based urathanes. We're using it over multi-color latex painted yard art, to provide UV and weather protection, and a degree of satin gloss. This product claims to provide "superior UV protection. mold & mildew resistance and a water seal" capability. We have used a quality water-based urethane floor finish, decades ago on unfinished flooring, and it did not yellow like oil-based urethanes did. In another post on the HD site, indicating suitability for your proposed use -- a Rustoleum (Varathane) rep stated "Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane is suitable for use on exterior wood surfaces, and can go over previously painted surfaces. The paint must be dry and in good, sound condition. We recommend applying in a test area first to ensure the desired results and finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3"

I want to apply this to my new redwood stairs, will this make them too slippery?

Answer

We appreciate your interest, Joe! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane can be used on exterior surfaces, we do not recommend it for use on stairs as it will not hold up to foot traffic. This product will chip and peel if walked on. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

does this product add a sheen or gloss look on the wood? Does it change the stain color underneath ?

The Varathane Clear Satin Water-Based Outdoor Spar Urethane adds a "medium gloss" when it dries. Your stain will appear slightly different with the urethane. Apply it to a test non-visible area to determine appearance. All clear coatings will alter the finish color a bit. Like most water-based urethanes, it goes on a milky white, but do not be alarmed - it dries clear. The finish does bubble a bit upon brush application especially if on a rough surface, so do not brush it excessively, and float it on in long, smooth strokes. Two additional notes - (1) generally water-based urethanes remain clearer over time (less yellowing) than oil-based urethanes, and (2) the reality of clear finishes is that, few varnishes/urethanes even the spars can stand up to UV forever. Underlying paints/finishes will fade and the clear coating will eventually fail.

Could I use this to enhance faded aluminum siding? Has anyone ever tried it?

Asked by Helen July 7, 2019

Answer

Hi Helen, thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane is recommended for exterior wood surfaces only. For faded aluminum siding, we recommend applying our Seal-Krete Original Waterproofing Primer Sealer: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Seal-Krete-5-gal-Original-Waterproofing-Sealer-100005/100199356 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

This will not turn white when it rains. It is an exterior grade product. Do you really think Varathane could get away selling it if it went white when it rains? The product is milky white in the can. If not careful any excess amounts in corners, or drips anywhere, may retain some whiteness after drying. However, the finish itself when dry is water resistant and is crystal clear no matter if it is raining or sunny.

Can This be used on a painted wood deck?

Asked by Muddy August 10, 2017

Answer

We do not recommend applying our Varathane Spar Urethane to deck surfaces, or any surfaces subject to foot traffic. Our Spar Urethane may be used on exterior painted surfaces such as railings and spindles once the paint has cured for a minimum of seven days.

A very nice finish. I used both a foam brush and a quality synthetic bristle brush. The foam brush worked good but I still like a good bristle brush best. Very low odor compared to oil based. The soapy water clean up is easier than having to use solvent chemicals for brush cleaning. I also very much like the faster dry time. I can easily get three to four coats done in a day on small projects. The satin provides my preferred level of sheen. I used 320 grit sandpaper before the final coat and ended up with an extremely smooth finish. Love it!

It is too early to rate the performance of the material. But, the ease with which it was applied and the current look earns it a 4 star rating. HOWEVER, let’s see how it hold up over the next few years. That will determine the real rating.
