We need to know more to get to the bottom of this, Tyler. Varathane Water Based Polyurethane dries to a crystal clear finish when applied as directed on the label. Give us a call at 800-901-0411, so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.

Best Water Based Poly!
Great product! Goes on very smooth, dries fast! Nice clear finish that doesn't detract from the natural look and feel of the wood. Only downside is that I can't seem to find it in a gallon sized can!

Poly as it should be
Coated a piece on 24"x24" Ash 6 times with a paint brush. Sanding between every 2 coats. It did well. I would use again on small projects.

Did a good job on tables, nightstands, and vanity
I had a bunch of maple furniture that needed refinished and we really like the way this Varathane Poly gave us a fresh clean surface. We sanded with 220 to get the surface smooth first. I applied with a good brush and even wetting the brush before starting we did get some slight tiny bubbles while brushing. I suspect that is a user issue as I don't do much painting.

To early to know durability
I, only, appled it 7 days ago. So, I will have no idea how it will last. But it did go on very easy and looked beautiful after 2 coats.

We appreciate the feedback. Please keep in mind that the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane requires a minimum of 3 coats to provide the best protection. The finish will also achieve maximum hardness when it fully cures after about 7 to 10 days. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Poor quality control - mismatched finishes
I used the Satin and was happy, until I needed to get a second can to complete the project. The second can, with the same exact date code, had a completely different level of shine - one can was almost a semi-gloss , and the other can produced a matte.

That's odd, Frank! To ensure the proper finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane, it is essential that each can is thoroughly mixed prior to each use and often during application. Care needs to be taken to mix along the edges, side, and bottom, so that there is no settled flatting agents in the can. If needing further assistance, please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us.

    Great top coat
I like that finish I use it to seal and protect all my chalk paint projects... I have repainted a bedroom set, a desk and a bathroom vanity all holding up excellent to every day use. I usually do 2 coats and I wait at least a day before I apply the second coat. Works well for me,,, I use sponges to apply.

I gave this a 4 star rating because the issues I have with this and all water base polyurethanes is the bubbles they leave even when you do your best efforts applying it. But when you get it right it looks awesome and the clean up is easy. You should use a quality brush and don't rake off the excess from your brush back into the can; use a different can and pour it back in when done, because it creates bubble that you pick up on your next dip with the brush. Also if you are careful you can touch the bubbles with a tooth pick or something sharp to pop them, but do wait too long after applying it. Of course this is done only one the last coat because you will sand the previous coat or coats. One last thing, I found it better to apply the coats in a cool environment between 65 - 68 degrees so it drys slower allowing you more time to eliminate bubbles.

This is an okay polyeurathane but I recommend no more than 3 coats! The can says the apply at least three, I did 4. It darkened the stain a little bit (which I ended up not minding) but on the fourth coat, my finish became cloudy. I later read this is probably due to a 'flattening agent' in the satin poly that causes cloudiness with too many coats. Satin finish (low gloss) is my favorite and looks great. This poly goes on easy and dries very fast (within an hour or two) and has very little odor. I sanded about 300 grit in between coats and the finish came out nice and smooth. As far as scratch resistance, I find it still scratches pretty easily. There were a few small scratches after working with it on my clean workbench top.

I don't know who thinks this is a matte, non-reflective surface, but I'm in the painting business and this is a low-gloss satin sheen if I've ever seen one. I needed a flat, matte finish and I get shiny. Not good and wouldn't recommend based solely on that.

That was not the intention! To achieve the right finish, keep in mind that a minimum of 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane is required. Make sure to also thoroughly mix the can beforehand as well as often during application too. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum
