Q:Is satin the right sheen to apply over maple wood kitchen cabinets.

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is offered in 4 different sheens to best fit your style choices and needs. Satin finishes can be used for areas with a lot of use while still offering an easy to clean finish. Glossier finishes tend to be the easiest to clean, while a more flat finish will hide surface imperfections better.

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Jon! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is suitable for use provided that the surface does not reach temperatures above 200°F or have direct contact with the open flame. This type of environment can cause the polyurethane to blister and peel. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Happy to help, Andrew! Yes, Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane can be used on a wooden bath caddy, provided the surface will not be immersed in water. For full protection, we do recommend coating all sides of the caddy. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Bought this in satin to finish an oak wine rack with a stained glass panel I made and was impressed with how easy to apply and clean up and how fast it dried compared to oil based products. I made sure I used a good brush recommended for water based finishes. Completed the job in record time!

          Didn’t protect like Sherwin Williams
I bought this at my local Home Depot when my other can (the same product but from Sherwin Williams paint store) ran out. I’ve never had a problem with ‘cheaper’ brands and I have used Rustoleum brands before. I was THRILLED to find it in a satin sheen and had a project prepped and ready to go, just needed the finish. I have used this type of product before, but still read all of the instructions. The first coat went on great. I noticed a small surface scratch - only through the poly, so I figured a second coat would help to make it more durable and was recommended anyways. After 3 days of eating on the patio so we didn’t ruin the finish we started using the table, but yet AGAIN the surface is SO fragile, an envelope on top of BREADCRUMBS left scratches. The whole reason I bought this product was to help preserve the finish. If you so much as look at it the wrong way it’s scratches off lightly with your finger nail. I don’t know if I got a bad batch or I am not applying it thick enough? But this is not my first time using poly and it is the only time I’ve ever had this problem. Let's talk through this, Nicole! Please keep in mind that the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane is suitable for interior surfaces only and will not be able to dry properly on exterior surfaces. This product also requires a minimum of 3 coats to build up the right protection. We suggest sanding the surface smooth and reapply with the recommend number of coats. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Use a lot of caution putting this over light colors, especially white paint. I painted my kitchen cabinets with white Beyond Paint, and after letting them dry for over a week, I follow the instructions and brushed one thin coat of the clear satin Varathane over the white paint. This stuff dried pale yellow, and collected a bit in the corners and looks like melted butter dried there. Now the doors will need to be repainted.

Let's talk about this! If the paint used is water-based and applied to bare wood, you are most likely experiencing tannin bleed on the surface. This is from the surface and not from Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane. You also want to avoid having the product pool on the surface or corners as this can also cause discoloration. To correct the tannin bleed, we recommend priming the surface with an oil-based primer, like Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer, and then recoating.

This is an okay polyeurathane but I recommend no more than 3 coats! The can says the apply at least three, I did 4. It darkened the stain a little bit (which I ended up not minding) but on the fourth coat, my finish became cloudy. I later read this is probably due to a 'flattening agent' in the satin poly that causes cloudiness with too many coats. This poly goes on easy and dries very fast (within an hour or two) and has very little odor. I sanded about 300 grit in between coats and the finish came out nice and smooth. As far as scratch resistance, I find it still scratches pretty easily. There were a few small scratches after working with it on my clean workbench top.

              Worked Exactly as Expecting
I recently had a new floor put in, and to my horror, one of my boards splintered. When i called up the company to fix it- the guy was trying to guess the exact sheen, and it kept coming out very noticably different than the rest of the floor, which was satin. I gave him the boot and researched how to do it. Based on the reviews- I gave this product a shot. Sure enough, after a few coats, i couldnt see his mistakes anymore, and it blended in literally PERFECTLY with the rest of the floor, way better than i had anticipated. For 8 bucks it was worth it for just a single board. I’m confident in this product if i need to do any additional touch ups in the future!
