Dear Johno: The pieces we recently picked up at our local HD in Massachusetts were smooth on all sides. You should check the Customer Service or Pro Desk at your HD, to make sure if this will be the case if this is important for your project. Sometimes PVC boards have a wood texture on one wide side and are smooth on the opposite side. Three recommendations for installation: (1) Glue the corners: Use AZEK PVC glue on all of the corners and joints. After the glue cures, the joints are stronger than the PVC. We tested it. No nails or screws are necessary. See: AZEK Model # ARAD0004OZ, Home Depot Internet #202084809 Store SKU #740567 Note: Other high strength PVC glues may work equally well, although we have not tested other brands. (2) Cortex screws: Use Cortex stainless steel screws and caps. If you try to use standard stainless steel screws without caps, you will find (as we did) that if you use standard sealant, e.g. DAP 230, to cover all of the holes, the cured sealant will attract dust over time and the holes will turn gray. Cortex caps are nearly invisible. See: FastenMaster Model # FMCTXT-AZ250TD, Home Depot Internet #202502214 (3) Cut edges: If you cut cellular PVC and the cut edge will be exposed, you need to seal it. If the cut edge is left as-is, the tiny cellular holes will collect dust over time and mold will grow on the surface. So sand the cut edge very smooth with 330 on the final pass, then wipe the edge with a clean rag soaked in acetone, to seal the open cells. Wear nitrile gloves, because acetone is a carcinogen absorbed through the skin. I hope this is helpful. Mark
I see no good reason why not. I glued four pieces together, cut them into a 36 inch diameter round piece which became a table top for a fire pit. That was last year and it has been outside in rain, snow, and ice since then without any problems.

Mikey - I can not tell from your picture what the 'width' is for the red boards you are trying to replace. If your red boards are 12 inches wide, then this product will be fine and you should be pleased with results. If your red boards are more narrow, then I would recommend going to the store and buying the PVC 1/2 x 4 x 8 to do your replacement work. Whatever one you use, the results you need will be obtained. Good Luck with your project. Patrick
I have successfully glued 90 degree butt pieces together wih standard PVC glue without primer. Have not tried 45 degree bevel cuts but it should work. Such glue joints are probably not as strong as PVC pipe joints so I would take that into account.
Do not use PVC anywhere near a flame.
Cuts just as easy if not easier than wood with a saw I would say very similar to a 1/2" piece of OSB or plywood. I would not expect to be able to cut this product with a knife.
Yes, it’s fairly rigid and would keep it’s shape well
Yes, there is a grain pattern on one side of this product. We are very pleased with the ease of working with it - though it makes a bit of a "sawdust" mess when cutting it with a circular saw. It takes paint well.
I would not recommend using this product of a deck top. Not rigid enough at 1/2" thickness. I used mine as trim to wrap the outside perimeter face of the decks wood frame and it worked well for that application.
