can you use dowel pins to connect boards?

If you mean wooden dowel pins, not really. Wooden dowel pins are used along with wood glue to create the bond between wood boards. The easy way to join cellular pvc boards together is to glue them using pvc cement and clamps... just like joining pvc pipe. Just be sure to buy CLEAR PVC glue, not all purpose. Check out videos on YouTube first. There's a new product called White Hot. I haven't used it but there's a good video about it.

I need this to be 3/4 by 3 inches wide. May I assume it will rip well lengthwise on my table Saw?

PVC boards can be ripped, crosscutted and routed easily. Most PVC boards that I have worked with produce cleaner results than wood. Just be sure to use a carbide blade with as many teeth as you can. The only cutting that PVC boards have difficulty with is a jigsaw.... the friction produced by the blades up and down action can cause a bit of melting.

Will this work well for interior window sills and around the inside of the windows? Also, possibl...

Dear Kiacats: Unfortunately, no on both counts. Cellular PVC trim is an excellent solution for exterior trim, but interior trim typically gets more wear and tear - and cellular PVC is softer than wood. Plus wood can be routed and shaped, then sanded to a smooth finish. Cellular PVC contains tiny cells that create a rougher surface when it is cut or routed. So wood is a better choice. For the same reason, cellular PVC does not have enough structural strength to frame a window -- but is ideal as the exterior case and trim around the window. See the photo below of a house we rebuilt along the shore in Massachusetts; all of the white trim is cellular PVC -- which never rots and never needs to be painted. A few tips for installation: (1) Always use stainless steel trim screws or trim nails to attach it, to avoid rust stains. The FastenMaster Cortex system is the best solution, with matching PVC caps that eliminate the need to fill screw holes. See: Cortex Model # FMCTXT-VA50SMHD, Home Depot Internet #203705494 Store SKU #822865 (2) If you need to join any corners, use AZEK trim glue plus an 18 or 23 gauge brad/pin nail to hold the corner together while the glue dries. Home Depot carries stainless 18 brad nails and 23 gaugue pin nails. You will also need a matching nail gun, e.g. the Ryobi One 18 gauge brad nailer, Model # P320, Home Depot Internet #203810823, UPC Code # 033287139620 Store SKU #632013 (3) If you need to add new window trim, build it as a 'frame' on the ground, then mount the frame on the window as one piece. This will allow you to work on a flat surface and build a nice trim box with tight joints. Pocket screws are helpful for large pieces, and glue all of the corner joints with clear PVC glue. For pocket screws you will need to buy a jig and use stainless screws. See: Kreg Model # K4MS, Home Depot Internet #202711579 Store SKU #1001213548 and Kreg Model # SDK-C2SS-700, Home Depot Internet #202711494 If you need a shorter screw, standard "pan head" stainless steel screws will work with the Kreg system. We prefer 'star drive' over 'square drive'. (4) Corner boards and special shapes: Many people do not know that Home Depot carries a much wider array of building products -- not simply what is displayed on shelves in a store. This is important for cellular PVC projects. If you need long corner boards for new siding, for example, you can buy pre-made AZEK corner boards (exterior and interior corners) with pockets routed on the sides for siding. This saves a ton of time and money, and the quality is excellent. If you need corner boards or another special shape or size, talk to the Pro Desk at your local Home Depot -- and check the AZEK website for the options before you go. An image of an AZEK corner board profile is attached below. (5) If you cut cellular PVC and the cut edge will be exposed, you need to seal it -- to avoid dust collecting in the tiny pores which turns gray or green. Sand the edge smooth with 300, then seal it with a clean rag that is damp with acetone. Wear gloves because acetone is absorbed directly through the skin. (6) If you need to install siding next to your trim, you can create or order 'rabbeted' edges -- a deep groove along the edge of the trim that the siding boards slide into, covering the ends. We cut rabbets into our window trim with a table saw, and ordered rabbeted Azek corner boards through Home Depot. A photo is attached showing what a rabbeted edge looks like. (7) You can mix and match Veranda and Azek trim and use the same screws and glue. Both are cellular PVC. Veranda is cheaper for standard trim boards. Azek offers more options, e.g. corner boards and bead board. (A photo is attached.) (8) Both Veranda and Azek are available with a smooth or woodgrain / 'frontier' surface, to match your house. You can order different versions from your Home Depot's Customer Service or Pro Desk. (9) Store the trim flat and covered at your home or job site, to avoid distortions if they get hot in the summer sun, and stains from leaves, etc. I hope this is helpful. Mark

Before painting do I need to sand and prime this product?

Asked by Doug August 4, 2020

Answers

Since it is PVC (plastic), you should be able to paint it with latex based paint without priming the surface. That being said, I found mine to have a semi-gloss surface so if I was going to paint it, I might prime it with a good solvent (oil) based primer. That will give the latex based paint a good surface to adhere to.

Is cellular PVC food safe? Looking to make a makeshift outdoor counter top for my garden bench. Thanks

I can't say for sure, but it's likely food safe. It would be the same as anything else made of PVC, such as bowels, plates or cutting boards. However, it could not be used to cut on as it has a cellular core.

These PVC trim boards are true to the dimension advertised, both the 3/4 in. x 3-1/2 in. x 8 ft and the 3/4 in. x 1/1/2 in. x 8 ft boxes I purchased. This was important for the outdoor framing project I used them for with vinyl beadboard panels. A similar product from another store advertised as 3/4 in. was much thinner.

Veranda boards because I want to enjoy my porch instead of spending time painting it...

I bought several packs of different sizes of these Veranda boards to frame out a small porch. I priced out the options, and while the cost of installing these boards is more expensive up front than using pressure treated wood, I liked knowing I would never have to paint them & that they would not rot. I used the cortex fastener system to install the boards and the plugs are almost invisible. One thing to note: if you need to rip the boards lengthwise, sanding the edges will be required to lessen the sharpness - after all, you are basically cutting plastic. The boards were easy to cut, but I recommend laying a tarp under your table saw to catch all the leftover pvc dust as it can be a pain to clean if you are ripping a lot of boards in your backyard. In summary, I also purchased the redwood lumber for the screen door and the cedar ceiling planks from HD. I love my new low maintenance porch...it turned out better than I could have expected. Thank you HD!

I ordered five boxes of 6 boards each. Built privacy panels incorporating privacy lattice. While the boards are rather sharp on the edges, they were quite easy to work with and created a really nice end result. I'm ready to buy Veranda sleeves for the pressure treated posts. Should make a really nice fence.

This product cuts and nails like wood, but is more durable. We were having problems with wood bees destroying the wood trim of our storage building, so we replaced it with this product. Low maintenance is of great value.
