Dear CC, To ensure a secure hole, we recommend setting the post into the ground with concrete according to our installation instructions. Here is that link: https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/01/013f1553-8312-4bf4-b2cd-26ea0bb18deb.pdf

The Veranda post sleeves are designed to be used with a post inside them and I wouldn't want to have anything critical such as a porch roof relying on the strength of the sleeve alone for support. If you don't have or want to purchase a 4x4 post then I would think two 2x2s joined together would do the trick. The difficulty comes when trying to attach the post to the deck and still allowing for the sleeve to slide over the post holder. Most post holders are slightly larger than the post, allowing the post to sleeve into the holder. Veranda does make a custom holder over which your post sleeve will go but as the holder is the exact size of the 4x4 post one must shave off 1/8" from all 4 sides of the post, the depth of the holder. It is simple to do. I believe the holders are only available through Homedepot.com and are quite dear but the end result is very attractive. I did my entire deck railing with this system. I hope this helps.

I have successfully drilled holes in these vinyl post sleeves (if it is the sleeve you are referring to when you say vinyl posts) with no difficulty, however they were holes smaller than the lag bolt size you will probably need. Ensure you use a 4x4 post within your sleeve.

How deep do I have to dig the post hole?

Asked by theodora April 5, 2019

Answers

The depth of the hole depends rather on what footing you are have, the length of the post and the use of the post. If you are going into earth and are just tamping it in then the depth is usually approx 3-4' If you are setting it in concrete then you needn't go quite as deep. The general rule of thumb is bury 1/3 of your post.

What is the best way to cut the 4 x 4 posts? And what type blade should I use?

Great cover up for our cedar posts
We converted a wood privacy fence to an aluminum picket fence. The solid wood panels were discarded and the vinyl posts were slid over the remaining cedar posts. Then we attached Jerrith aluminum fence panels to them making a very nice looking fence.
