Q:Hi. General oil tank question. What would be the size and thread type on the inlets of an older oil tank (53 yo)? I bought an electronic gauge so that I can monitor my fuel level on my phone, but the darn gauge is 2" I.D. I believe they're 1 3/4" Thanks

Answer This Question

A:  Pipe is referred to by its Inside diameter. And pipe is what you are most likely dealing with here. This gets confusing as HVAC contractors refer to tube by its Outside Diameter. As a result, a plumber will refer to ½” copper tube while a refrigeration technician may call it 5/8” copper tube. Over the decades oil delivery has been done by ever more powerful trucks with ever more powerful pumps. Oil tanks are not built to contain significant pressure. Because the hazard created by an oil tank failure is so great code has required the size of the vent and fill pipe to get larger over the years. The bigger pipe can handle the increased flow and the bigger vent can handle larger amount of displaced air created by these more powerful pumps. Therefore, today you typically find a 2” fill, 2” Vent, 2” gauge and a 2” taping to either balance it to another tank or to be used for a fuel pickup via a duplex bushing. Personally, if I had a 50-year-old tank, I would consider it to be the biggest potential hazard in my home and would replace it. Many if not most homeowners’ policies do not cover oil leaks. So, it can cause great harm in many ways. Sorry to be wordy. I have seen 1”, 11/4, and 11/2 used on old tanks. If your pipe measures 1 ¾” OD it is probably 11/2” pipe.

Q:Is this tank for kerosene use?
    by|Dec 16, 2023

    Answer This Question

A:  This tank has been designed and manufactured to comply with the UL80 standard, for the storage of residential heating oil. The codes regulating the storage of heating fuels vary tremendously throughout the country. I cannot give you a definitive answer. You would want to put your question to a qualified local professional in your immediate area. These might include your building inspector, fuel supplier, licensed heating professional and sometime the local fire department because fuel is often treated as potentially hazardous. They should be able to give you a definitive answer as to whether UL80 meets the requirements for the storage of kerosene in your area based on your proposed installation. If you scroll down the Home Depot product listing page you will come to a section entitled Product Details. If you expand that section, you will find PFFs containing detailed information about this tank. However, now that all that has been said let me add. I have been in the plumbing industry for a long time, and I have never run into an inspector that has not allowed kerosene to be stored in a tank like this. But its always a good idea to check with a local authority.

Q:How does this particular fuel tank stand upright are there screw in legs that can be attached to those notches I see protruding out of the bottom sides of the tank?

      Answer This Question

A:  If you scroll down the Home Depot product listing page you will come to a section entitled Product Details. If you expand that section, you will find PDFs of the product documents. The specification sheet shows and gives details on the tank including the 11/4” female threaded lugs intended to receive tanks legs. Tank legs are not provided with the tank. The codes regulating the installation of Home Heating oil tanks vary greatly throughout the country. Where I am located 11/4” x 12” pipe nipples are used. One end is screwed into the tank lugs and cast-iron floor flanges are screwed into the other. The floor flanges are strewed into the other and more evenly distribute the weight on the floor. To know what is required in your area I would suggest speaking to a local qualified licensed professional, your fuel provider or the building inspector in your town.

          great tank for the price
It was ordered on a friday and went to pick it up the next friday. The quality of the welds were very good,( I was a mig welder for 35 years), the threads in the bungs were free of spatter balls, it has metal pushin thread plugs are installed in all 4 of the 2” npt top plugs and a 3/8” npt discharge plug on the bottom, the legs are 1 1/4” pipe legs that you supply. It was thick coated black powder coating which resisted scrathes while being shipped loose on a wood pallet. Overall i am very satisfied with the price, quality of tank material, welding of this tank, I think it was a very good purchase. I painted it dark green to comply with fuel oil storage.

It is a good replacement for my current tank, it was in stock which was great. Since I have no way to get it home the shipping was a great choice. The shipping was great as it can in a lot less time that was estimated.
