Questions & Answers

Does the fan come with a mounting bracket?

I do not see any of the hardware in the listing? Is there a mounting bracket included with this?
Asked by: bigmike47
yes you get mounting hardware and it uses two additional screws to mount and unmount, included. two screws release the barrel. I posted some photos in my review that should clear up your question. simple to work with.

What is the mounting configuration?

Can this product be installed on a 4" vertical stack in a garage?
Asked by: sjmoose
The bracket is part of the fan. Super easy to mount. Pop off the fan part, put screws in the back mount and reassemble. I installed an outlet that was switched off of the existing light switch. Then just plug the fan in.

My computer products generate a lot of heat and I got tired of that room being ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house. 4" dryer flex hose fits perfectly making this successful venting project a snap. In a standard mounting removing two screws and then removing the fan from the enclosure exposes the mounting area for easy installation. The low speed setting does reduce some noise but the electricity consumption saving is minimal. IMO noise is not objectionable. Down side: Flow direction marking is on the housing making it possible to install the fan reversed. Mark the center fan unit to match the mounting housing before removing.

I tried it out before mounting it, and you could hardly hear it on high. Then I mounted it to a brick wall. It wasn't flat enough, and the fan got louder. I then mounted a board to the wall, and the fan to the board. That fixed the problem. I am not using this for a bathroom fan. Instead I am using it to exhaust the fumes from my 3D printer. I have a dust collection hood over it, and I am using flexible dryer duct to connect to it. It is then connected to a dryer vent. It works well for this. It draws enough air to clear out the fumes without drawing too much and cooling the print too fast. I will probably also use it for a solder station as well. I already have quiet bathroom exhaust fans, but when I need to replace motors, I am planing on converting them to use these. They are much cheaper then a good quiet exhaust fan, and do a better job.

Viagrow 4 in. 105 CFM Ceiling or Wall Inline Bathroom Exhaust Fan is well designed. I like that you can clean the insides. The blade will need to be cleaned from time to time to make sure stuff does not cling to it and then become unbalanced. I found that to mount it with the included hardware on a stud you take two screws out and remove the barrel from the frame and mount the frame and then re-install the barrel. That’s also how you can clean it, two screws removed, simple. The fan has two speeds and enough volume to really help clear out the bath area. I think that they also figured out that these would also work with grow rooms in helping with that environment and would have worked great in my moms small green house. Mine does not vibrate and is very light weight. It's setup to use a wall plug and that’s really the only way to easily service it, that I see. I can tell a difference using it, I am very pleased.

Two-speed fan - and I only need the lower speed. Made my own basement exhaust fan unit to replace the old, noisy, high electric usage dehumidifier. Just like a Wave Ventilation unit except for about $150 with all the parts, not $1,500....This is the machine that made the project a great success.

I ... 4 IN. 105 CFM CEILING OR WALL INLINE BATHROOM EXHAUST FAN My application is a little strange. I run a few small web servers in my home office in a base cabinet to lessen the noise. I was using two simple PC fans to drive air in the bottom and out of the top of the cabinet which worked fine, but that was almost as noisy as the computers themselves-- even with expensive fans. I added this to a standard insulated dryer duct kit to exhaust the warm air outside and run the fan on low. I can still hear the fan a little but mostly thru the flex hose. I did not take apart the fan to mount it. I back-screwed the fan plate to a piece of shelf with a cheap mouse mat to act a vibration baffle. This allowed me way more flexibility in mounting/adjusting the fan to the duct work. I will be building a pretty little insulated box around the hose soon. The air movement is much better with this inline fan solution.

I recommend this unit for new construction. Using it in existing construction is possible but would require some creativity. In-line fans are MUCH quieter than regular surface mounted bathroom fans. You can't really hear it at all in the bathroom but you might hear and can feel the whoosh of air. There is a two speed fan switch with low moving about 78 Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFPM) and high moving about 104 CFPM. Let's do the math. That's enough replace ALL the air in a 6x10 foot bathroom in less than 8 minutes. Most fan specs say 104 CFPM is enough for a 10x10 or larger bathroom. Ceiling mounted fans with this kind of air volume typically cost twice as much money. The fan build quality for this fan is excellent but there are a few things that you have to keep in mind when ducting an in-line fan. Here's what you need to know. 1. You can use a regular HVAC register box in the ceiling or wall with a regular register/vent cover. 2. There is no flapper in the fan to prevent back drafts from outside into the house. You will need to ensure that the exterior vent cover has one. Many exterior dryer vents do. (You might want to buy and install a ceiling fan shell in the bathroom since the shell has a flapper vent in it as well as an appropriate register box and cover. This sounds kind of odd, but it might actually be cheaper than buying an HVAC register box and cover.) 3. Mount the fan (this unit) as far from the bathroom as is practical. The farther from the bathroom vent, the quieter it will be. 5. Unlike most other bathroom fans, this fan has a GROUNDED three-prong plug. Your best option is to run 14/2 Roamex from the switch and install a standard electrical outlet near where the fan will be installed. This will also make it easier to clean and service the fan and it should meet local code. (Always check local codes.) 4. Here's a tricky one. You need to mount the fan someplace where you can access it. In-ceiling bathroom fans can be opened for cleaning. This unit will require cleaning as well. In our case, the basement bathroom ducting passed through the ceiling in a water heater closet so the fan was installed against an accessible ceiling joist in that closet. An alternative would be mounting it in a closet ceiling and installing an access panel. The unit WILL NOT fit in a 2x4 or 2x6 stud wall and requires about 7 inches for clearance (i.e. a nominal 2x8 or larger ceiling joist). Of course, if your ducting goes through an attic or crawl space, fan clearance and access in the attic space won't be a problem but you will still need an outlet. 5. It isn't obvious, but the fan is a two piece design that makes it pretty easy to mount to a ceiling or floor joist. Remove the fan unit from the center by unscrewing two bands to mount the base and ducts. Mount the housing to the joist. Clamp the duct work to it. Then the fan housing drops into the center and clamps down with the bands. The fan unit can then be removed for cleaning or service without disconnecting any duct work. 6. You need to use regular 4 inch A/C or bathroom fan ducting for this fan. stepping down to 3 inches will restrict airflow and increase noise. It is always better to use rigid ducting for exhaust fans than the flexible stuff. 7. One thing that takes a little getting used to is the complete lack of noise in the bathroom when the fan is on. This fan moves a LOT of air, though so you can easily check for airflow. You might want to either use a lighted switch for the fan or a timer switch. A lighted switch will let visitors know it is on. A timer switch will ensure that it isn't on all the time. 8. One thought. You might not want to use this fan in a first floor powder room where there is a lot of traffic since many people use fans to mask....you know...noises. Very self conscious people will need to run the faucet instead. Otherwise, Installing this fan where there are a lot of people will mean that people may hear pretty much everything but, as a consolation, they may smell pretty much nothing. I hope this information is helpful. For the record, I did receive one of these fans for evaluation. With my reputation as a home remodeling contractor on the line, I feel good enough about this fan to write this positive review AND to install the fan in client's homes.
