This 0.5 cu. ft. bagged decorative red lava rock from Vigoro is all you need to add a pleasing touch around trees, shrubs, decks and more. It's rich, red color will instantly update the appearance of your outdoor setting without fading or getting washed or blown away. Unlike mulch, these red lava rocks won't attract wood pests. You can also use it to retain soil moisture and control erosion. This single bag of small size lava rock will cover 3 sq. ft. to a 2-in. depth. It should not be used in fire pits.

Red color absolutely washes off large stones
Despite reading the complaints here, I went ahead and purchased three bags at my local store in Melbourne, FL, and placed the rock at my entry along the foundation just yesterday afternoon. It did start to rain later and rained all night. Came out this morning to find several large formerly red now black gray slate rocks among the red. That may work for you if you don't mind the variation, but not what I had planned for. Oh well. Will not be buying again. If I want red, I will use red mulch.

The color washed out after one rain!
We purchased 30 bags as the color was what we wanted – After spening a weekend prepping the area and another Saturday speading the rock we were very please. It rained that night and the next morniing we noticed that the color had faded and washed away – We purchased another bag at the same store and as you can see in the picture, there is a signifcant difference in the color (New rock on left, one day old rock on right after rain). Now we are stuck and definaly not happy. Buyer beware, the rock is not what is advertized.

Color Washes Off Right Away
Light weight and easy to haul and put down. But the color washed off 1/3 of the rocks after the first rain. Unfortunately, I installed under both covered and uncovered areas, so now it doesn’t match. I’m really disappointed.

Used these lava rocks as base drainage layer for a...
Used these lava rocks as base drainage layer for a dog potty that I built on a concrete surface. These rocks work great and drain well. They are lightweight. I put Vigoro pea gravel on top of these rocks as a middle layer then topped both rock layers off with pet turf as the final surface layer. Mini Bilkis blocks were used to create the boundary. My puppy loves her new dog potty!

Don't count on it staying "red" for any length of time.
Great price, but don't count on it staying "red". Color washed off a lot after the first rain. It is for our firepit, so I don't mind that it change many different colors.

Great value, nice size, has helped hostas with slugs
I did my front flower bed with these, they look great and were easy to put down. I got them early in the season and put some down around my hostas just as they started coming up, and slugs do not like the feel of these. I put these over the existing mulch, which has kept the neighbor cat from using my flower beds as a litter box. The size and color in each bag was consistent, I walk very carefully over them so I don't lose my balance, and it's easy to use a blower to get grass clippings and leaves off. I would recommend them. The bags aren't heavy like the marble chips/stones, so I was able to do the work on my own. I will never use mulch again.
